St. John Paul the Great T-shirts $ 10 Available in S/M/L/XL/XXL My Dear Friends, Stewardship is the word to describe a parishioner and his or her relationship to the parish. Each one of us is called to stewardship. It consists not only of financially helping your parish, but it also consists of giving time and talent. We have so many volunteers and men and women who belong to committees such as social ministry and bereavement, as well as the many volunteers who are catechists, lectors, altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, ushers and weekly collection counters. We also have volunteers who quietly, behind the scenes, help when we need to have bulletins stuffed or help when we need our bottles and cans separated and counted. We have people who decorate our churches and keep our grounds looking good with their gardening and weeding. We have people who volunteer to help us in the choirs and lead us in song, and we have volunteers who help with the audio equipment. I hope to have one day a hospitality committee to help with donuts and coffee and to even greet people as they arrive for Mass. Friendly faces are so important for people to see when they come to Mass or even when they leave Mass. It is true that we have the Eucharist and that should be enough for anyone, but many people today want to feel connected as well to other people and to have friendly faces to reach out and say good morning goes a long way to bring others into a church where they feel wanted and accepted. The parish experience has been an ongoing change throughout the decades because peoples needs change throughout the decades. We have the constancy of ritual and the constancy of the Eucharist, but many times a parish may lack in that welcoming attitude that goes a long way. I think we do a very good job in Torrington of being aware of peoples needs and being welcoming in the parish at Sunday Mass, but there is always room for improvement. So, as we focus on the word stewardship, let us plant that seed so that the one who sows may help us all reap the benefits of a thriving parish community that centers on the Eucharist as we reach out to our brothers and sisters in Christ to let them know that we are all in this together. DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY In June, the bishops from the United States voted to establish a permanent Committee for Religious Liberty. Currently, the USCCB s Committee for Religious Liberty seeks to strengthen and sustain religious freedom by assisting the U.S. bishops, individually and collectively, to teach about religious freedom to the faithful and the broader public, and to promote and defend religious freedom in law and policy. Let us pray that the committee can encourage lawmakers to protect this First Amendment right as they revamp the HHS mandate. Love must inspire justice and the struggle for justice. You can help area food banks feed the hungry in our community by donating a non-perishable food item to our monthly food collections. Items such as PASTA, PASTA SAUCE, RICE, TUNA, MAC & CHEESE, CANNED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, BEANS, JUICES, PEANUT BUTTER, JELLY and CEREAL may be left at St. Francis or St. Peter worship sites the weekend of July 29 th -30 th. Gift cards to area grocery stores are also greatly appreciated. Many stores donate additional items when food banks make purchases with gift cards. Thank you for your continued support!

Welcoming committees are now being formed for each one of our Mass times. Based on desire and on volunteers. These welcoming committees reflect the hospitality of the Church through its warmth and kindness to members of our parish family and those who may be visiting for the first time. We express God s love, grace and compassion through positive, friendly, kind, courteous and helpful conduct to all who enter the Church at all times. With each Mass having it s own special micro-community we are looking for those who would like to join a small group from their particular Mass time, to welcome at the doors prior to Mass and if the desire is there, to orchestrate Coffee and regularly or on occasion after that Mass. With 8 Masses, meeting the needs of over 1,500 people each weekend would be an overwhelming task for any one person or small group. But with participation from a few joyful people at each Mass, this does not need to be a big commitment at all. If you are a people person, perhaps you would be willing to simply be at the doors before Mass to smile and greet your brothers and sisters in Christ. Maybe you could offer to pick up the donuts! Or step out once a month just before the end of Mass to set up the donuts/baked goods Many hands make light work. We ask you to please pray about how you are being called to use your God-given gifts as a member of the Body of Christ, the Church.
