By Father Michael Kearney The Lord longs for our hearts! e see it throughout the Scriptures, and W in particular from the later prophets like Jeremiah: I will give them a heart with which to understand that I am the LORD. They shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart, and Ezekiel: I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts (Jer 24:7, Ez 36:26). The Lord, our God, desires for our hearts to be with Him. Because of our sinfulness and brokenness, we turn away from the Lord consistently. his is seen in our Gospel this weekend. The T Lord is frustrating the Pharisees, too many are leaders within the Jewish faith. The Lord reveals that their hearts are not ones of good intention for the sake of the Lord but for their own power. Their motivation to confront Jesus and his disciples was to discredit them and prevent the people of God to return to the love of God their Father, through Christ. Yet, Jesus won t let that happen. He calls out the Pharisees and reminds the people to return to God. e might need that same reminder in our W faith. Sometimes we can find people hiding behind their power. Their intent; not to draw people to the Lord, but like the Pharisees to discredit anyone who threatens their own power. May we not be like the Pharisees and humble ourselves before the Lord and ask the Lord to help us join our hearts to His! 2018 Catholic Ministries ANNUAL APPEAL Goal: $136,900.00 Amount Pledged: $157,104.00 Amount Paid: $147,611.00 Donor Count: 404 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

Page Four September 2, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD September 2, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: INNER FAITH, OUTER ACTIONS The Church has always experienced a tension between faith and actions. Rather than viewing these in tension, however, we truly follow Christ when they are united. FIRST READING For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us? (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). This passage speaks of the goodness of the law that God was giving to his people They would no longer have to wonder what God wanted of them. He was revealing his will to them in a very clear manner so that they might observe it and always be blessed. SECOND READING Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). We are reminded that everything we possess comes from the Lord. We should be grateful for what we have received, and be willing to share it with those who do not have enough. Our faith must be expressed in action. It is not enough to believe in one s heart without expressing that faith in the way one treats one s sisters and brothers (and especially those who are weakest in our society, i.e., the widows and orphans). GOSPEL This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). Pharisees were dedicated laymen who attempted to live the law of the Lord to the greatest possible extent. They would work all day long at their occupations, and then they would study the law. They wanted to build a fence around the law, i.e., take the law to its widest possible extent. to be sure that they were not breaking the least important of the laws and their prescriptions. They gathered in schools to determine what the law intended. These interpretations often extended the law far beyond what was originally intended to address. Because the Pharisees were so idealistic, they easily fell into the trap of judgmentalism. This is how they treated Jesus and the disciples in this passage. Jesus responds with a certain vehemence. He felt that their dedication to minute prescriptions of the law while they failed to respect the people they were serving was hypocritical. He also felt that they took their legal discussion much too seriously. He calls upon them to adopt the proper interior disposition, one of charity and gentleness. If one s heart is filled with rancor and judgmentalism, then no matter what that person dies externally, he or she would be sinning against God s love and still be trapped in sin and hate. REFLECTION Missouri is the Show Me State. Tradition holds that Missourians need clear and concrete proof to be convinced about something. They need someone to show them something is true. Moses told the Israelites to observe carefully the statutes and decrees he taught them. Moses wanted the Israelites to show him the depth of their relationship with the Lord, their God. James tells his hearers to show him their faith by caring for orphans and widows, by living their faith in Jesus. Jesus chides the Pharisees, who were more concerned with interpreting the Law than living its purpose: to take on the mind and heart of God. They gave god lip service, but not lived service. Evil comes from within and so dies good. If the mind and heart of God are within a person, others will see the person s faith and God s ways. Living the substance of the Law and not interpreting it to suit one s needs leads to justice, that is, right relationship with God and all creation. Pope Francis 2017 Palm Sunday homily called us to show Jesus through our deeds: He is present in our many brothers and sisters who today endure suffering like his own: they suffer from slave labor, from family tragedies, from diseases from wars and terrorism, from interests that are armed and ready to strike. Women and men are cheated, violated in their dignity, discarded Jesus is in them, in each of them, and, with marred features and broken voice, he asks to be looked in the eye, to be acknowledged, to be loved. See Jesus in our hurting sisters and brothers. Look him in the eye. Show Jesus through lived service, not lip service, and others will be able to look him in they eye, too! Page Six September 2, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church SHE WILL PREVAIL T HESE ARE HARD TIMES FOR LOYAL CATHOLICS. For the sake of our children we must fight back. The Church has been attacked from outside and from within for the last 20 centuries. But Holy Mother Church was founded by Jesus upon the Rock who was Peter and Jesus promised that the gates of Hell would never prevail against it (Matt. 16:18). The Church has prevailed against wicked Roman emperors, heretics, Mohammad and the Muslim invasion, which lasted eight centuries, the corrupt kings of England, the Protestant reformers, the French Revolution, Communism, and Adolf Hitler, just to name a few. We have survived this and more. That is the track record of Holy Mother the Church. B ut today, we are faced with a crisis from within. How long will it last and where are we heading? Only God knows! But we all have an important part to play right now. We can t sit back and do nothing. We have been given all the tools (weapons) that we need to assist in this battle and the power to cleanse our Church. They should be done as frequently as possible and they are: Reception and Adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist. Praying the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Fasting. Any other devotion that is your favorite. It is urgent that a choral invocation be raised from earth to heaven, to implore from the Almighty, in whose hands is the destiny of the world, the great gift of peace (St. John Paul II, November 2001). The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our hope is that individuals will step forward to fill two empty hours: Wednesday: 2:00 am Saturday: 8:00 pm (every 4th Saturday) In a parish as large as Vis, there must be two or more individuals that would be willing to step forward and fill the need. To register, please call Joan at 630-530-8963 or Mary at 630-941-9173. THANK YOU Your prayers are a source of great strength and your financial support was most appreciated to help bring relief and comfort to the people effected by floods in Kerala, India.

MT 18:19 A STUDY ON THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF ST. TERESA OF AVILA Begins Thursday, Sept. 13 through mid-november Two session times: 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Visitation Parish Center All women of the parish are invited At the heart of this study is the passionate, unrelenting love of St. Teresa of Avila, the famous 16th century Spanish nun who became the first female Doctor of the Church. With her feminine heart and deep spiritual wisdom, St. Teresa helps us embark on the spiritual journey that takes place within our souls by guiding us through what she coined "The Interior Castle," where Christ abides in the center of our being. Her profound insight, leads to a deepened relationship with Jesus, empowering us to become pioneers forging our way with love through the new and often challenging frontiers we face in life. Endow is a Catholic educational program that brings women together to discover our God-given dignity and feminine genius through the richness and authenticity of Catholic teaching, and to understand our unique role we have in bringing our culture back to focus on humanity and transforming society. When we as women grow in understanding the teachings of the Church and in the truth of Jesus Christ, our faith becomes more fully defined, and so does our transforming influence in the family, the community, and society as a whole. Register for Endow Today Prayerfully discern participation, register, and purchase the study online at the following link where additional information about ENDOW and the study can be found: [MATERIAL COST: $34.95] https://endowgroups.org/groups/ karen-stuefen-s-visitation-group
