A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?

From our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, In the first part of the 20th century, the London Underground sparked a move of thousands of people to the suburbs of that great city. One of those new peripheries was a place called Sudbury. An incredible laywoman, Frances Westwood, bankrolled the construction of a beautiful neo-gothic church to bring Christ and His beauty into the new sprawl. She was also highly educated in theology, liturgy and the arts, and, kind of a pushy woman, too, she maneuvered until she got a priest assigned to the parish who was a match for her vision for this new parish community. Father Clement Russell set about to build a church and a church community so steeped in the English Catholic tradition, stepping into the place was like stepping into a world where the Protestant Revolt never happened. Fr Russell was a tireless educator of his people in the language of the liturgy. And, parishioners contributed their time, talent and treasure in abundance. St George s was a place where every Sunday and feast day the people came for First and Second Vespers; where Solemn High Mass with Gregorian chant was the norm; where processions of Our Lady and the Blessed Sacrament were frequent. Sometimes the ceremonies were thronged with people, and other times, not so much. When the servers complained that there were more people in the sanctuary than the nave, Fr Russell wisely reminded them, The church is full of angels, regardless of the number of people! This amazing priest ministered in this parish until he was run over by a bus at the age of 80. The parish had a flourishing liturgical life in an out of the way place, in a time and place when most English Catholics were accustomed to 30 minute Low Masses and the occasional devotion in their parishes, and not much more! I can t help but think that Fr Russell and Miss Westwood would approve of our Adoration Chapel, whose renewal is very much in the Arts and Crafts style that inspired the aesthetic of St George, Sudbury. And, even if our aesthetic in the main church is more Roman Renaissance than English Gothic, I think they would appreciate the unique, but beautiful liturgical life of our parish. One of the things I love most about Prince of Peace is that we have some incredibly gifted laymen and laywomen in our parish who are thirsty for and knowledgeable about theology, liturgy and the arts. The partnership between the clergy and those souls has developed a culture in the parish which is arresting! Now, of course, it s not everybody s cup of Earl Grey, I know, but for those who are open to the riches of the sacred liturgy and the Roman tradition, it s a great thing. The highlight of my day is going to the Altar of Prince of Peace every day surrounded by my dear people and a cloud of witnesses in heaven. I know that it is the same joy of our people, as well!
