TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH LUTHERAN CHURCH - MISSOURI SYNOD FARIBAULT MINNESOTA PALM SUNDAY / SUNDAY OF THE PASSION March 24 & 25, 2018 AS WE GATHER This Sunday often seems caught between two poles. On one hand, we recall Jesus entrance into Jerusalem to the shouts of hosanna. On the other hand, we are thinking ahead to the whole story of Holy Week. The Epistle forms a bridge between the two, reminding us that Jesus did not enter for the accolades of the crowd but to be obedient unto death, even death on a cross, to save us. The crowd s welcome was prophetic in this regard calling on Him who would save them, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Today we add our voices in welcome, knowing that in order to save us from sin and its death, our Lord had to suffer in our place on the cross and die in our place to set us free from sin and its death. What a great entrance into Holy Week! INVOCATION (Pastor speaks from the back of the church.) In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Brothers and sisters in Christ: In the five weeks of Lent, we have been preparing for this week, for the events of our Lord s death and resurrection. The great and wondrous paschal mystery now lies before us as we remember Christ s entrance into Jerusalem with palms and hosannas before He confronts the cross. Everything in Lent points to this week. As we commemorate how our Lord entered to the welcome of palms and hosannas, we also remember His death, which gives us life, and His resurrection, through which we dwell with Him for all eternity. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

Special 2 Palm Sunday PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL (Jesus enters Jerusalem.) John 12:12 19 Please stand (The procession moves to the center of the aisle where the Gospel is read responsively with the congregation) The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting. Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey s colt. Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! At first His disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about Him and that they had done these things to him. Now the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that He had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet Him. Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! So the Pharisees said to one another, See this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after Him! This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. PROCESSIONAL HYMN Ride On, Ride On in Majesty LSB 441 (10:30AM ONLY) SUNDAY SCHOOL CHILDREN SING King of Kings & Hosanna COLLECT Let us pray together, Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into Jerusalem, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and faithful hearts. Lead us to follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Special 3 Palm Sunday CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Based on Psalm 24:3 10; antiphon: Psalm 118:26 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. Dear Lord, we confess that we, by ourselves cannot stand in Your holy place. We are sinful people in need of cleansing and pardon. We confess that we have sinned against You in our thoughts, our words and our deeds. We have not loved You with our whole heart and we have not loved each other as we should. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, have mercy on us and forgive us Take heart, dear friends! God hears our prayers asking for mercy and forgiveness and for the sake of His beloved Son, God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of our Lord, therefore, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory! All: Blessèd is He who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless You from the house of the LORD. HYMN FOR THE WORD Lift High the Cross LSB 837 OLD TESTAMENT READING Zechariah 9:9 12 (The prophet foretells of the humble King.) 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Special 4 Palm Sunday EPISTLE READING Philippians 2:5 11 (Humbled to death on a cross that we might be exulted with Him.) 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL (The triumphal entry) Luke 19:28-40 The Holy Gospel from Luke, chapter 19. Glory to You, O Lord! 28 When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say this: The Lord has need of it. 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord has need of it. 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near already on the way down the Mount of Olives the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. 40 He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. This is the Gospel of our Lord. Praise to You, O Christ! CHILDREN MESSAGE (10:30AM ONLY) OFFERING (Please fill out Friendship Pads.)

Special 5 Palm Sunday HYMN OF THE DAY Hosanna, Loud Hosanna LSB 443 SERMON ALL WELCOME THE HUMBLE KING Luke 19:28-40 The Rev. Paul Rieger NICENE CREED (See inside back cover of hymnal) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Today, in addition to our celebration of Palm Sunday, it is also the day we remember the Annunciation from the Angel Gabriel to Mary, that she would conceive and bear Jesus, the Savior. Together, let us pray: People We give You thanks, almighty Father, for sending Your Son into the womb of the Virgin to take on flesh and blood, to live in righteousness before You, and to suffer and die in our place. Give us faith so that with the blessed Virgin Mary we may trust in Him as Lord and Savior; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen Let us pray to the Lord that He may hear us on behalf of the people of God and all people as they have need.
