GOSPEL MEDITATION August 26, 2018 Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" The words of Jesus' disciples in today's Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction. When the disciples question Jesus' teaching, he confirms its truth. "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life." For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt? Fraudulent Email Scam A new email scam has surfaced last week asking for your help by purchasing an ebay gift card for someone and they are using Fr. Jim s name. The email is sent from a fictitious email account through gmail. Please ignore any requests coming from this account. Diocesan collection August 25 & 26 This weekend, we will take up a second collection for the Catholic Communication and Catholic University of America Campaigns. The Catholic Communication Campaign is a collection that helps to support our weekly televised Masses and various catechetical video programs. This is a mandated collection from the Diocese of Pittsburgh where a gift from each parish is expected. This second collection will assure that this gift does not have to come from parish general funds. Thank you for your generosity. Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Matthew, Apostle at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, September 2nd at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For September, it will be the relic of Saint Matthew, Apostle. For more information, please visit the Chapel s website saintanthonyschapel.org Sitters needed at St. Anthony s Chapel Currently, the chapel is in need of sitters (attendants). If you are able to volunteer one hour a week (or month) to be present to Our Lord and his saints, please call 412-999-4401. Parish Picnic Just a quick reminder that our Parish Picnic takes place this Sunday, August 26th. The picnic is held at Millvale Riverfront Park from 1:00-6:00 pm. Drinks are provided - you bring your best dish. Dinner is served 3:00-4:30 pm. Feel free to bring folding chairs, tables, snacks, additional beverages & coolers.

A PRAYER VIGIL OF REPARATION AND PETITION Sunday, September 9, 2018 1:00 pm at St. Anthony s Chapel Troy Hill - Pittsburgh All Catholics are invited to an afternoon of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament to ask for His mercy upon His Church in this moment of profound crisis. We come to make reparation for own sins and those of our bishops and priests. We gather in prayer that from Christ s mercy will come the healing and restoration of holiness for which we all hope. 1 PM - Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Holy Hour of Reparation follows It Is the Spirit Who Gives Life Bishop Zubik often refers to On Mission for The Church Alive! as a new Pentecost for the Church of Pittsburgh. This journey is a time for us to open our hearts to the movement of the Holy Spirit as he pours forth his gifts so that we might follow his promptings to share our faith with others and grow the Church. As we reflect upon the effects of that first Pentecost in the lives of the Apostles we see that their hearts were transformed in order that they might fulfill God s will. The Acts of the Apostles show us how the gifts of the Spirit brought forth confidence and wisdom in the Apostles so that they could go out to all the world and tell the good news. This same Spirit of God gives us life as we are called to go into our communities and share the same faith as we invite others to trust in God. At times we may not feel equipped for this task, yet relying on the grace of God we can renew the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 25 & 26, 2018 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Even though many found the teachings of Jesus difficult, He did not back down. In our families it is important to say what is difficult to hear, to speak the truth with kindness, to correct with love and guide with understanding. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In today s Gospel, Jesus asks Do you also want to leave? We must ask ourselves if we really want to hear the good news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of God able to break into our consciousness, change us and call us to hear the cries of the poor? This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the poor by assisting many families with utility & rental help. God Bless You! North Catholic H. S.
