4 North Side Catholic Community Week of February 10, 2019 WORLD MARRIAGE DAY It s true that there are difficulties, there are problems with children or with the couple themselves, arguments and fights but the important thing is that the flesh remains one, and you can overcome, you can overcome, you can overcome. And this is not only a sacrament for them, but also for the Church, a sacrament, as it were, that attracts attention: See, love is possible! And love is capable of allowing you to live your whole life in love : in joy and in sorrow, with the problems of children, and their own problems but always going forward. In sickness and in health, but always going forward. This is beautiful. Pope Francis During this weekend, we celebrate the joy of married life and the numerous stories that reflect the happiness as well as the sorrows of those who live out the sacrament of Matrimony. I remember attending a Sixtieth Anniversary and standing along side the happy couple. I asked them what was their secret. The man responded at once, I DID EVERYTHING SHE TOLD ME TO DO. As I looked at the woman, I could tell her response would be the same. Their mutual respect and love for each other set a solid foundation for their six children. In their sixty years together, they became role models to so many married couples. The first wedding that I officiated broke from tradition when the bride to be insisted that both her dad and mom walk her down the aisle. She spoke of the special bond that her parents had for each other and how they shared that bond for their only child. The groom lost his father to cancer while he was in grade school and his mom raised him by telling him numerous stories of the love she and her husband shared for each other. For all the married couples in our parishes, I pray for continued blessings in the years ahead. I pray also for those who are planning marriages in the future. Likewise, I pray that those who have lost spouses and have shared many blessings to be consoled by their faith and the love that comes from God. Within our parish grouping we are fortunate to offer Pre-Cana Classes. These classes are open to all in our parishes who are preparing for Marriage. Those who direct these classes offer many insights by personal experiences and their own expertise into married life. - From Fr. Larry Smith

5 Moving towards One The merging of our six parishes is approaching. The clergy team of the North Side Catholic Community is committed to keeping everyone informed and engaged as we move towards one. Our new joint Pastoral Council and the parish Finance Councils are also resources for information, or if you need fellow parishioners with whom to share your questions or feedback. At this time, the plans mainly involve bringing together the parish offices, ministries and parish groups, and finances. These are not small things, and they will require patience and flexibility. As we have said all along in the On Mission prayer, the goal, among other things, is "vibrant parishes with effective ministries." May that be our prayer as we discern what is on God's heart for the future of our parishes. Save the Date. You have the opportunity to attend a parish assembly (informational meeting) about the merger process on either March 24 or 25. More details to follow. This Weekend: Interim Mass Survey This weekend, you have opportunity to provide feedback on the interim Mass schedule which has been in place since mid-october. You can either complete this survey 1) online through February 15 on the survey link on the Most Holy N a m e o f J e s u s p a r i s h w e b s i t e ( or 2) on the paper copy survey at church. If you are able, please use the online method since this is the most efficient - it is on the one website to keep this centralized with easy access. If you use the paper copy, that must be completed after Mass and returned immediately in church, not taken home. Also, while we will use this feedback to review our current schedule, please keep in mind that there are many factors which impact when we have Mass in particular, the availability of priests. In any case, we do want your perspective. Thank you. Don t miss the Survey Pastoral and Finance Councils The following parishioners will serve as the Pastoral Council for the North Side Catholic Community: Donna Bodnar Mary Byrnes Frank Gilbert Steve Gorzelsky Bob Greca Jan Greca Bernadette (Bernie) Greer Kerry Kennelly Rich Kieler Ryan Lalle John (Jay) Marano Mary Beth Miller Mary Ann Turkovich The following are the members of the Finance Councils for each parish. St. Aloysius: Rick Horn, Suzy Johns, Chris Kocian St. Cyril: Micki Cloonan, Ken Knochel, Hugh Mulvey, Jim Stehle Holy Wisdom: Lou Flore, Shirley Novak, Rich Roos, Celine Scott Most Holy Name: Jim Eberz, Dennis Hughes, Jeff Senge, Sharon Sweeney-Trunick St. Peter: Vince Lewandowski, Val Sowa, George Whitmer, Sue Zientek Risen Lord: Karen Brown Elderly Outreach Ministry The North Side Catholic Community plans to have an outreach to all elderly parishioners in the six parishes. Currently, there are a variety of ways we serve this group in our parishes, but there is no consistent approach to learning about the status of our parishioners above a certain age. If you would like to be part of the planning and outreach to our elderly parishioners, please contact Mary Swindal, Pastoral Associate, , mswindalns6@gmail.com. Please consider being part of this effort to reach out to those who have given our parishes so much.

6 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Week of February 10, 2019 St. Michael Prayer Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. New Bulletin Format Coming Soon Soon we will begin a new bulletin format that will be one inclusive bulletin, without separate parish pages. In order to make this new process efficient, we will need any bulletin announcement from our ministries and groups by Monday mornings. Please continue to these to your parish office and also to the address: nccb2019@gmail.com. This stands for North Side Catholic Community Bulletin. Please understand that we may experience glitches in this new process, so please have patience as we work together to make this successful. Please note that your contribution envelopes are sent to the appropriate parish, no matter where you attend Mass. We are called. As we know, all parishes in the Diocese of Piittsburgh are heading towards something new. In our grouping, some parishes have already been through mergers (Risen Lord, Holy Wisdom, St. Peter), while for others this is the first time (St. Aloysius, St. Cyril, of Alexandria, Most Holy Name of Jesus). Since change is inevitable, we all need to pray about how we will respond to what's coming - and pray especially for the virtue of hope. But we cannot ignore or deny that this is difficult and involves grieving. For many, our parishes are like family, and something like changing a Mass time means losing a group of people we have known, and expected to see, for years. We must acknowledge that there is pain in this, and the upheaval to come. So we hold onto the words of Jesus, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." And we must pray for hearts that are not hardened - and are instead willing to stretch in new ways. Here the fitting words of Jesus may be, "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." As this change continues, we will be in situations which, and with people who, will require us to be generous of heart when it comes to our opinions and traditions. We will need to show, and be shown mercy, especially since what is ahead will involve deep and personal emotions and connections. We ask God to be with us through this change, that old and new may come together to give even greater glory to God. addresses for the Clergy in the North Side Catholic Community Fr. 13 Saint Anthony Chapel Week of February 10, 2019 From the Desk of the Director February brings with it the custom on St. Blaise day of the blessing of throats. Most Catholics are familiar with the custom but not with who St. Blaise is or why we bless throats on this day. St. Blaise was a physician and a bishop in Sebastea, Armenia. So our own Fr. Mollenger follows in St. Blaise s example of pastoring God s people and by his being an Apothecary, a healer of what ails people. St. Blaise started out as a physician then spent sometime as a hermit. From the hermitage he was called to be bishop. As bishop he taught by word and example. Many came to him for spiritual and physical healing. In his lifetime St. Blaise performed many miracles of healing. There are stories that even wild animals came to him for healing. In 316 AD the governor Agricola by order of the Emperor Licinius began a persecution of the Church. St. Blaise being so visible was arrested. As he was being led to jail a mother set her son who was choking to death of a fish bone at his feet. The child was cured immediately. The governor demanded that St. Blaise renounce his faith. To persuade him, St. Blaise was beaten, and attacked with iron combs. H e was jailed for a few more days and finally beheaded for remaining faithful to Christ. St. Blaise as with all martyrs provides us with an example of faithfulness in the face of great difficulty. He also shows us how to be compassionate, to care for those around us, and teach by word and example. We remember the miracle of the healing the child by the throat blessing and asking for his help, but he can give us so much more by the example of his life. May St. Anthony and all the saints of the Chapel including St. Blaise pray for you. The Catholic War Veterans & Auxiliary are currently looking for new members We place American flags on fallen veterans' graves before memorial Day and do volunteering at Heinz VAMC. For more information please call Donna Kramer Put Out Into Deep Water And Lower Your Nets For A Catch When we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus it is pretty clear that so much of it was unexpected. God s chosen people were certainly awaiting a Messiah, a Savior, but they were expecting a rich and powerful king, not an itinerant preacher. Even the people Jesus surrounded himself with the poor, sinners, the marginalized were unexpected. Why wouldn t the Savior surround himself with more influential people? Yet, we know that Christ came to save all, not just some and that he casts his net far and wide in order to draw all people to himself. As followers of Christ, we seek to be his face and hands and heart in the world today and we look for countless ways to invite others to share in his life of faith. The words he speaks to Peter and the Apostles are spoken to us. Do not be afraid to put out into deep water and inspire the hearts of everyone you meet to know and love Jesus. While you may not think so, your witness of faith can be just what someone else needs to go deeper themselves in their relationship with the Lord.
