Second Sunday of Easter April 15, 2012 3 It is, I think, worthwhile to point out that this Sunday is not the Sunday after Easter. It is, rather, the Second Sunday of Easter. The Paschal Event is never really in our past. It is the way that we Christians live our lives. Our liturgical observance of the historic reality continues until we mark Pentecost, the feast of the Holy Spirit of God who guides us in our journey of faith. Our celebration of the Triduum went very well. The rites were accomplished without a hitch. And.attendance was up, noticeably so on Holy Thursday and at the Easter Vigil! I mention this in particular because OLB s participation in these two major liturgical events has been rather sparse for the past several years. So congratulations and thanks to all who took the time to participate. Our Music Ministry, the choir and the Ding-a-lings (that s the bell choir) were outstanding. Thanks to Teresa for all the work required to get things down pat. One note not a G-flat or an F-sharp, but a note nonetheless our choir can always use more members. Several parishioners volunteered for the Easter celebration, but more sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses for the regular choir would be very welcome. If you can carry a tune give it serious thought. One of the major challenges in this year s celebration was the new Roman Missal. Both the language and the format were daunting, but all the ministers prepared themselves well. Also, several parishioners mentioned that the homilies were very good. I know the ones I heard were excellent, and folks came up to me to tell me that mine were very good also. One of the criticisms that is often mentioned in surveys about declining church attendance is the poor quality of the preaching. We are very blest at OLB with good homilists. No, not everyone is great all the time. I know however that the deacons and priests of our parish spend a good deal of prayer and time in preparing their presentations. As a rule, it pays off. Thanks then to all the ministers and the people of Our Lady of the Brook. In my humble opinion, we did good. Peace, now and always. OLB s Food Outreach One Shopping bag of food Per household Per month. Women s Club News If Everyone does something then No One has to do Everything.Your Help Is Needed As we look back at 2011, we can t help but remember images of disasters in our country and around the globe: the tsunami in Japan, the tornado in Joplin, MO, flooding along the Mississippi, earthquakes and storms around the world. Church World Service (CWS) has been able to respond by providing blankets, hygiene kits, emergency clean-up buckets and other essential items like food, shelter and water, to people in need. The Glenbrook Council of Church Women United has asked its member churches to help buy restocking kits for the warehouse to respond to the next disaster. Our OLB Women s Club is sponsoring a drive to help with this worthy cause. Each family that is able is asked to provide a hygiene kit and drop it in the box at the back of church next weekend. It is essential that the instructions are followed exactly with no notes, or extras included. If you can help, please prepare your kit and bring it with you to Mass next weekend. To Assemble a Hygiene kit you will need: One hand towel measuring approximately 16 x 28 (No fingertip or bath towels) One washcloth One wide-toothed comb One nail clipper One bar of soap (bath size in wrapper) One toothbrush (in original packaging) Six standard-sized adhesive bandages (Band-Aids) Place all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure, remove excess air from bag and seal. (DO not include Toothpaste, as toothpaste with an extended expiration date will be added at the distribution point)

Second Sunday of Easter April 15, 2012 5 Bulletin Building Blocks - Second Sunday of Easter TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today was once called in Latin Dominica in albis, or Sunday in White, because the church was full of newly baptized Christians wearing their white baptismal garments. Another old title, best forgotten, is Low Sunday. There s nothing low about this festive Sunday in Easter, the eighth day since the first Alleluia rang out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a symbol of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the seven-day rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of our calendar are always extended for eight days, called an octave. In a way, this means that this first week of Easter is really considered to be one great day. This octave day of Easter sees the best features of Easter still vibrant: joyful alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere, sprinkling with water, and a lavish table where the Lord gives us himself as bread and wine. For Orthodox Christians, today is the Easter feast, since their tradition requires that the Christian Passover cannot begin until the days of the Jewish Passover are ended. James Field, Copyright J.
