Saint Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church and School Community Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. The Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018 Pastor s Note Six Years Ago Around this time six years ago, I was in Rome and about to return to San Jose. I received a call asking me if I would agree to be the pastor here at St. Martin. At first I was surprised because I was used to working in bilingual parishes. With all the excitement of working with people again after years of seeing only books, I accepted with happiness. Since the beginning, all of you were nice to me. Fr. Abe has been an excellent brother priest to me and a guide for this community. We have accomplished many things together. We have walked together through baptisms, graduations, birthdays, weddings and funerals and in every single moment, I felt the support and love of all of you. This place is amazing. Each one of you make this parish and this community a welcome place for every one. I m certain that you will always be that way, no matter who the pastor will be. I just collect what others have seen. St. Martin is the place that I have lived the longest in my life since I left my home when I was 17 years old. I love this place and I love each one of you. I always will, no matter where I am. The time has come to continue to do the work of God in another place. Please don t think for a moment that it is easy to leave this parish and start again in other place. I also know that it will not be easy for you to get used to your new pastor. But what kind of people would we be if we are not ready to embrace a moment like this with understanding, acceptance, kindness and a smile. Our faith and our church is some thing that goes beyond St. Martin and is some thing bigger than us. As I leave in July, I am asking that you support the new pastor. I can tell you that if you give him just half of the love that you gave me, he will be the happiest pastor here in San Jose. But I know that this community will not give just half of their heart, you will give him every thing. -Fr. Village House 2018 is coming back to St. Martin of Tours, May 2 - June 6. Village House is a rotating shelter in the San Jose community, which provides shelter to 15 unhoused women. We provide not only a warm bed, but also meals, transportation, laundry, and companionship during their stay. We rely on your time and talents not just during the the time of our guests' stays, but also to assist in organizing the project upfront. Village House requires help from volunteers with all different skill sets-- there is literally something for everyone: intake, overnight stays, meals, transportation, laundry, marketing, documentation, finance, etc! You don't need special skills to be part of the organizing team; just a love for our neighbors in need. Please stay tuned for more information about how you can participate. If you have questions or ideas, or would like to make a donation, please contact Patrick at (408) 998-7984. New Things Many of you may remember that the inside of the church was recently painted. The roof has been repaired so now it is time to paint the outside of the Church. Some of you may have noticed the new chairs on the altar. They are part of the new items for the church: new altar, ambo, ambry small altar for the Chapel and, of course, the new baptismal fountain. The altar in the small chapel was donated by one of our parishioners. The altar, the ambo, the chairs are a donation in memory of Betty Leary. Only the baptismal fountain is part of the capital campaign fund. We hope to have everything for Easter. Thanks to all for your continued support and prayer.

Scripture Readings for NEXT Week Sunday March 25, 2018 Psalm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Gospel Reading: Mark 14:1-15:47 Prayerfully reflect on the Respo9nsorial Psalm. Why is this psalm appropriate for Palm Sunday? Note that Psalm 22 begins, my God, my God, why have you abandoned me. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) This weekend, our Elect (below) will participate in the 3 rd Scrutiny. + Matt Brann + Albert Guzman + Lily Rogers Last weekend we experienced the 2 nd Scrutiny focused on Christ as the Light of the World. This weekend we experience Christ as the Resurrection and the Life. Are there aspects of our lives that need resurrecting this Lent? What are the ways Christ can bring us new life this Lent? Maybe we find it more helpful to remain focused on Christ as the Light of the World to help us see parts of our lives that need healing. As we continue through this Lent, we invite you to join us for the Masses during Holy Week. We d like to extend a special invitation to the Easter Vigil on March 31 st at 8:30pm where our Elect will become Catholic by receiving their Baptism, Confirmation and 1 st Eucharist. If you have other questions, we also gather from 7-9 PM each Thursday, so bring your questions and an open heart. All are Welcome, ALWAYS! For more information, please contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org Faith Formation Corner We are now well into Lent, it s almost Holy Week so as you reflect on your Lent thus far, have you found your Lenten practices have helped deepen your faith? For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to explore another question from one of our Confirmation Candidates. They ask, How do we grow in faith over time? This is a wonderful question. As we prepare for Easter and our celebration of Jesus resurrection, it would be important for us to reflect on whether we have grown in our faith since we began this Lenten season. Growing in faith is both a grace and an expression of our desire to grow closer to God. At this moment, we may find ourselves struggling with the idea that God knows us personally and that Jesus is still active in our world. We may believe that Jesus lived, but still doubt whether Jesus actually rose from the dead. Growing in our faith involves us both praying for the grace of faith as well as taking ownership for our part in this lifelong journey. If you d find it helpful to pray with an example of faith in scripture, read through Luke 8:40-56. There are multiple examples of faith at work. As you read through it, invite Jesus to help you see how this passage may help you to grow in your faith. I trust Jesus will help you with the rest If you have a question you d like us to address or a Faith Formation related update you d like to share, please email Daniel (dvalcazar@stmartin.org) and I ll do my best to get to it. I look forward to this new way to engage with you!
