GRAND KNIGHT REPORT Vivat Jesus In writing my Article for our council newsletter, I asked myself what could I say that that will have an insightful impact on our membership, and all I can think of is doing God s work. We are Evangelist of our faith, we, follow the beliefs of our faith, and our churches mission is our mission, Love Know Serve Jesus -Mary Church - & World. The Knights of Columbus has asked us to promote the Domestic Church and that happens by doing God s work. Grand Knight Tom Starynchak As you may know the Knights of Columbus has embarked on a new program promoting membership in the order by allowing Catholic Gentlemen to join the order online. In doing so it allows those individuals to become members of the order and come to our meetings but they do not have voting rights until they have gone through at least a First Degree Ceremony. This new process in becoming a member will help increase membership in the order and help in meeting our council membership goals, but all efforts will have to take place in getting these new members through a first degree. The easiest way we can increase our membership is not through our online efforts, it is the efforts of our membership to ask a Catholic Gentleman to join the order. So make the effort and help us grow so we can continue the good work we do. Membership Director Tom Starynchak 2

Pullis Pro-Life Ponderings-8 WHAT A GREAT TIME TO BE CATHOLIC! WHAT A GREAT TIME TO BE PRO-LIFE! some of the accomplishments in the Pro-Life arena in 2017: These are Restoration of the so called Mexico City Policy that requires private organizations in order to be eligible to receive foreign aid to sign a contract promising not to perform abortions ( with certain exceptions ), not to lobby to change abortion laws of host countries or otherwise actively promote abortion as a method of family planning. Restoration of a policy to direct US funding to family planning programs not involved in China s population control program. Confirmation of Neil Gorsuch, a pro-life advocate, to the US Supreme Court. Appointment of pro-life advocates to positions in Washington. Participation by the President and the Vice President in the January,2018 March for Life in Washington The following is a list of our 2017 accomplishments in this area plus an update on our current pro-life activities: - The purchase by the Lennon Pregnancy Center s of their new $30,000 ultrasound machine funded equally by our Council and The Knights of Columbus Supreme - Successful Pro-Life Essay contest involving our youth. -In late January, 2018 we announced our 2018 Pro-Life Student Poster Contest-IT S COOL TO BE PRO- LIFE! HISTORY OF THE SILVER ROSE OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE HAD DONE SO MUCH FOR HER PEOPLE IN MEXICO THAT THE COLUMBIAN SQUIRES, THE YOUTH GROUP ASSO- CIATED WITH THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WANTED TO GIVE SOME- THING BACK TO HER. THE GROUP, HEADED BY BROTHER MIGUEL MARTINEZ ESTRADA, GRAND KNIGHT ANDREAS SAUCEDO AND FRAY MARGIL DE JESUS OF KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 2312 IN MONTERREY, MEXICO, CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF RUNNING A ROSE TO THE BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE IN MONTERREY, MEXICO. THE SQUIRES WERE SO ENTHUSED THAT THEY WANTED TO INVITE OTHER SQUIRES FROM TWO OTHER COUNTRIES ON THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT TO PARTICIPATE. THEY CALLED SQUIRES FROM LARE- DO, TEXAS, AND LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA. THE CANADIAN SQUIRES ASKED TO START THE RELAY RUNNING OF THE ROSE FROM THERE THROUGH THE UNITED STATES AND FINISHING UP IN MEXICO. THE FIRST ROSE WAS BLESSED BY BISHOP JOHN C. CODY IN LONDON. IT WAS THEN FLOWN TO NEW YORK WHERE IT WAS RECEIVED BY GRAND KNIGHT JOSEPH THOMASEN, WHO IN TURN TOOK IT TO SUPREME KNIGHT LUKE E. HART. MR. HART THEN TOOK THE ROSE TO DALLAS, TEXAS AND DELIVERED IT TO DISTRICT OFFICERS OF THE STATE OF TEXAS. BROTHER KNIGHT JACK COLLERIN RECEIVED THE ROSE AND SENT IT TO LAREDO, TEXAS, WHERE IT WAS GIVEN TO THE SQUIRES FROM MONTERREY, MEXICO, AT THE INTERNATION- AL BRIDGE IN LAREDO. THEY RAN THE ROSE FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE TO MONTERREY THROUGH SABINAS HIDALGO N.L. MEXICO TO CIENEGA DE FLORES AND ON TO THE BASILICA IN MONTERREY, MEXICO ON DECEMBER 12, 1960. THE FIRST ROSE WAS A NATURAL ROSE, AND AFTER A YEAR IT HAD DECOMPOSED. THE SQUIRES WERE SO FULL OF INSPIRATION THEY DECIDED TO MAKE YET ANOTHER RELAY RUN IN 1961, BUT DUE TO THE CONDI- TION OF THE ROSE IT WAS NOT ABLE TO BE USED AGAIN. AFTER CONTACTING GRAND KNIGHT ARTHUR MOUNT AT COUNCIL 1134, REVEREND EDWARD GATFIELD (FATHERTED) AND BISHOP JOHN C. CODY DECIDED TO MAKE A BRONZE ROSE AND SENT IT TO OUR LADY IN MONTERREY, MEXICO. WHEN FRAY ANTONIO DE JESUS SACEDON AND THE SQUIRES OF CIRCLE 660 IN MONTERREY HEARD OF THE BRONZE ROSE, THEY DECIDED TO CALL UPON BROTHER MIGUEL MARTINEZ MONTOYA (OWNER OF JOYERIA ROSINE) IN MONTERREY TO MAKE THEM A SIMILAR ROSE. THE IDEA WAS TO MAKE A SILVER ROSE BECAUSE SILVER IS ONE OF MEXICO S PRECIOUS METALS. THE JEWELER SAW A BEAUTIFUL BED OF ROSES IN A GARDEN OWNED BY MRS. SHIRLA OSTWOWK. HE ASKED IF HE COULD HAVE A ROSE AS A MODEL FOR THE MAKING OF THE SILVER ROSE. SHE FIRST REFUSED, STAT- ING THAT SHE WORKED VERY HARD TO MAKE HER GARDEN BEAUTIFUL AND HER ROSES PERFECT. HOWEV- ER, AFTER TALKING TO MR. MONTOYA, SHE SAW SOMETHING IN HIS EYES AND HOW HE SPOKE ABOUT THE ROSES. SHE ASKED HIM TO EXPLAIN ABOUT HIS INTEREST IN THE ROSE IN MORE DETAIL. MR. MONTOYA EX- PLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THE ORIGINAL ROSE IN 1960 AND WHAT CANADA WAS DOING FOR OUR LA- DY IN MONTERREY. ONCE SHE HEARD ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE SILVER ROSE SHE GLADLY GAVE HIM THE ROSE AND THE STEM TO WHICH IT WAS ATTACHED. MR. MONTOYA, KNOWING THAT THE ROSE WOULD EVENTUALLY WILT, TOOK A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS AND MADE SOME SKETCHES. SINCE THEN THE MONTOYAS FAMILY HAS MADE ALL OF THE SILVER ROSES FROM 1961 TO 1997. THE ROSE BUSH FROM WHICH THE ROSE WAS REMOVED WAS CALLED ROSE OF PEACE. THE FIRST SILVER ROSE WAS BLESSED BY BISHOP ALFONSO ESPINO SILVA. THIS ROSE WAS THEN SENT ON TO NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, TO WILLIAM L. PIEDMONT, DIRECTOR OF FRATERNAL SERVICES AT THE SUPREME COUNCIL OFFICE. THE BRONZE ROSE WAS BLESSED BY BISHOP CODY. IT WAS RECEIVED BY SUPREME KNIGHT LUKE E. HART. ARCHBISHOP FRANCIS J. SPELLMAN OF NEW YORK SO ADMIRED BOTH ROSES HE KEPT THEM FOR A SPECIAL MASS. BOTH ROSES WERE THEN FLOWN TO DALLAS, TEXAS. TEXAS STATE DEPUTY JACK COLLERIN, STATE SECRETARY ED GUNTER AND GRAND KNIGHT SCOTT GRANT OF FORT WORTH SENT THE ROSES ON TO LAREDO. LAREDO COUNCIL 2304 RECEIVED THE ROSES AND TURNED THEM OVER TO BROTHER KNIGHTS FROM AT MID BRIDGE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE IN LARE- DO. BROTHERS LOUIS G. ALANIS RECEIVED THE SILVER ROSE AND BROTHER ENRIQUE GARCIA RECEIVED THE BRONZE ROSE. AGAIN THE ROSES WERE TAKEN TO SABINAS HIDAGO AND CIENEGA DE FLORES AND ON TO MONTERREY. THIS TRADITION SYMBOLIZES UNITY AND ESPECIALLY THE INTERNATIONAL BROTHER- HOOD THAT HAS BEEN JOINTLY NURTURED THREE COUNTRIES. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 6

HISTORY OF THE SILVER ROSE ~ CONTINUED IN 1997 DURING A FOURTH DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION IN KINGSVILLE, TEXAS, A SILVER ROSE (WHICH WAS MADE A YEAR BEFORE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE COUNCIL AND ASSEMBLY OF LAREDO) WAS PRESENT AT THE EXEMPLIFICATION. A REPRESENTATIVE FROM MONTERREY ALONG WITH THE KEEPER OF THE ROSE FROM LAREDO (SIR KNIGHT ALFREDO MCCABE) WAS ALSO PRESENT DURING THIS EXEMPLIFICATION. AFTER SEEING THE RECEPTION THE ROSE RECEIVED, IT WAS DECIDED TO HAVE ANOTHER ROSE MADE BY THE JEWELERS IN MONTERREY. THIS SPECIAL ONE WOULD BELONG TO ALL ASSEMBLIES, COUNCILS AND SQUIRES CIRCLES ENCOMPASSING THE FOURTH DISTRICT OF TEXAS OF THE GUADALUPE PROVINCE. THAT ROSE WAS MADE OF SOLID SILVER WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON ITS DESIGN. THERE ARE TWO LARGE ROSES REPRESENTING THE TWO DIOCESES OF THE FOURTH DISTRICT OF TEXAS, A SMALLER ROSE BETWEEN THEM INDICATING LIFE AND FUTURE GROWTH. THE STEMS OF THE ROSES CIR- CLE EACH OTHER INDICATING UNITY AND AT THEIR BASE ARE TWELVE ADDITIONAL SMALL ROSES REPRE- SENTING THE TWELVE DISCIPLES. THE BASE IS MADE OF MARBLE FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF MEXICO, SIL- VER FROM ITS MINES AND LABOR FROM ITS PEOPLE. TOGETHER WITH THE HELP FROM MANY IN THE MOST SOUTHERN REGION OF TEXAS AND THE NORTHERN REGION OF MEXICO, A TRADITION IS ALIVE AND GROWING. TODAY FOUR ROSES ARE RUN ALONG DIFFERENT NORTH AMERICAN ROUTES FROM CANADA TO MÉXICO THROUGH 38 U.S. STATES AND FIVE CANADIAN PROVINCES BEFORE MEETING IN LAREDO, TEXAS, FOR TRANSFER INTO MEXICO CROSSING THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE. IN 2013, THERE WILL BE FOUR ROSES TRAVELING SIMULTANEOUSLY. (EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH A FIFTH ROUTE ARE UNDERWAY AND MAY BE- COME REALITY IN TIME FOR THE 2013 PROGRAM.) ONE ROUTE BEGINS IN ONTARIO AND RUNS THROUGH THE CENTRAL U.S. TO MEXICO. A SECOND ROUTE RUNS FROM MANITOBA, WEST THROUGH BRITISH CO- LUMBIA BEFORE TRAVELING SOUTH ALONG THE U.S. PACIFIC COAST AND TURNING EAST TO TEXAS. A THIRD ROUTE BEGINS IN CONNECTICUT AND TRAVELS THROUGH THE EAST CENTRAL U.S. TO TEXAS AND THE FOURTH ROUTE BEGINS IN VIRGINIA RUNNING ALONG THE EASTERN SEABOARD INTO FLORIDA BE- FORE TURNING WEST ALONG THE GULF COAST TO TEXAS. IF ESTABLISHED, THE FIFTH ROUTE WILL RUN THROUGH THE NEW ENGLAND STATES. THE FIRST FOUR ROSES FINALLY MEET IN LAREDO, BEFORE THE JOURNEY TO MONTERREY. THE OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SILVER ROSE ONE LIFE, ONE ROSE PROGRAM CONCLUDES AT THE BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE ON HER FEAST DAY, DEC. 12, 2013. ST. Knights of Columbus BENEFITS NEWS The Value of Membership Referrals As a professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate most is when one of my brother Knight clients or his wife refers another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service I provided. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I meet with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek out membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or your Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentlemen in question. It s always more effective to tell a candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of the local councils, we can make sure we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. New members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1.55 billion to charity and provided in excess of 673 million hours of service. And our membership has merely scratched the surface in North America. Imagine the potential. *Receive a complete Family Needs Analysis at my expense.
