February 2016 Lenten Message 2016 Pope Francis in his calling for the Extraordinary Jubilees Year of Mercy has asked that the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God s mercy. God always initiates change in our lives and does so by creating the desire within us that seeks out these expressions of mercy. To open wide our hearts to the workings of God, we first need to be attentive and listen to the word of God. Lent challenges us to open our Bibles, spend time in silent reflection, and make our hearts available to hear God speaking to them. Blessed Mary, the Mother of God, is our model. She reflected daily on God s word in the scriptures and received the Good News from the Archangel Gabriel. She embraced God s Word and sang of the mercy that was shown to her by God. Pope Francis says, God s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. We being inspired by God are called to love our neighbour and to devote ourselves to what the Church s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbours in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. By taking this path, the proud, the powerful and the wealthy spoken of in the Magnificat can also be embraced. This love alone is the answer to that yearning for infinite happiness and love that we think we can satisfy with the idols of knowledge, power and riches. Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favourable a time for conversion! Let us ask together encounter the mercy of God and acknowledge, with our Blessed Mother that we too are the humble servants of the Lord.
KNIGHT NEWS, Council 14446 February 2016 Page 2 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? As I reflect on the Knights of Columbus, a busy life and our Lenten season, I think of Isaiah s answer to God s call in verse 8. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! We are asked in many ways to serve and to serve many, Church, Family, Community. As Matthew told us 25 v35-41 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Not sure what happened in my life that lead me to start quoting the Bible, but I am glad it happened. Brothers this is the Knights of Columbus, when asked Who will we need to respond Here I am. We need to take care of our brothers and sisters, in the community and in the world, for as the King replied whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Lent is a time of reflection, of sacrifice, and of doing good deeds. Participate in Charity, Fraternity and Unity with our Council. Come to the General Meetings get involved. Join us Friday nights 7:00pm at Mary Mother of God Church for Stations of the Cross and Holy Rosary during lent. Rob Castonguay Grand Knight Brother Knights As many of you may know, a number of adult leaders from various organizations in and around the Mary Mother of God Parish community have been spending a bit of their time focusing on the needs of our Parish Youth. I feel that it is our duty as Knights to assist this group in any way we can as they strive to serve the young adult members of our church. This is the direction that our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, has invited and requested that we pursue as an Order. I am asking for some help. If you know of any youth within our Parish who might have some interest or insight they can share please invite
