Adult Faith Program Sacraments: An encounter with God and with the Church Join us as Fr. John Gloss leads us to gain an understanding and appreciation of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church This adult faith course is an introductory overview of the theology of the Sacraments, the public, liturgical prayer of the Church. Each of the sacraments will be discussed within the context of its role in the lives of the faithful, initiation into God s life, healing and reconciliation, and service to God s community. 3 Sunday Evenings - Sept 25 th, Oct 2 nd and 9 th 6:30pm to 8:00pm Register before Sept. 20 th - Mail to: adultfaith@sjvs.net or call 732-548-3880 Adult Faith Program The Case for Jesus: Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ Join us as we investigate the evidence on whether we can trust that the Gospels are accurate recordings of the Life of Jesus Our Catholic faith is based on the belief that the Gospels tell the true story on the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth. But how do we know this is true? Join us as we look at the internal and external evidence to uncover what is the truth, who are the real sources for the gospels, when were they written, did Jesus claim to be the promised Messiah and the Son of God, why was he crucified and what is the evidence for the resurrection. 3 Sunday Evenings - Oct 16 th, 23 rd and 30 th 6:30pm to 8:00pm Register before Oct. 8 th - Mail to: adultfaith@sjvs.net or call 732-548-3880 YOUTH MINISTRY All 8th through 12th graders are invited to join us for our first official youth group meeting. TODAY IS CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States designates the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday a day on which to celebrate and pray for the Church s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. This year s theme is Prayer: The Faith Prayed. As a catechist, you are responding to a call to share the gift of faith with others, even as you deepen your own faith. This call may have reached you through your pastor, the director of your parish s religious education program, or through your role as a Catholic school teacher. But know that this calling ultimately comes from God whose Holy Spirit inspires and guides you.

Become an Altar Server for St. John Vianney! You can play an important role at Mass! Attention all 5 th through 8 th grade students, in the Parish Catechetical Program or St. John Vianney School. Did you know that you are eligible to become an altar server? St. John Vianney s Altar Servers play an essential role in the celebration of the Mass and other special liturgies. Any interested students in grades 5 or higher are welcome to join. We are looking for dependable altar servers who can be counted on to fulfill their duties. This is for anyone who is part of the St. John Vianney parish. It is a beautiful way to support our parish community and a wonderful opportunity to assist Monsignor O Neill, Father Joseph and Father John, as well as Deacon Tom B., Deacon Tom M. and Deacon Joe. At a very important time in Jesus life, He accepted the services of a young boy. This young boy provided five loaves and two fish for that very momentous miracle with which Jesus launched his teaching on the Holy Eucharist. The Sacred Writers do not tell us the name of the young boy, only his deed, and his act of service. Like this young boy, altar servers also perform a great deed of service. Applications will be available in the SJV school office or the Catechetical Program office. Completed applications may be dropped off at the SJV school office during the week or the Catechetical Program office during class or Sunday in the sacristy after any Mass. Applications need to be turned in by September 30 th so training materials can be prepared. All training will be done in the church on five Sunday afternoons in October beginning the weekend of October 2 nd. An altar server commissioning service will be held at the 9:00 AM mass on November 6 th after training is completed. The application has the dates and times of each training session. It is imperative that all new servers attend all training sessions. We ask that parents of new altar servers stay during the training, so you can fully understand the commitment needed. Each server will be assigned to a team and a schedule of Masses will be made available. If you have any questions about this special parish ministry, please call one of the committee members and we ll be happy to help. Mary Jantas (732-574-1191) Deacon Thomas Bresnan (732-827-2821) Agnes Bacsik (732-388-9034) A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Beloved. First of all, I ask that supplications prayers, petitions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself as ransom for all. Paul wrote an encouraging note to Timothy and we have a chance to both read it and apply it for our spiritual well being. We are taught all the elements of prayer adoration, contrition, thanks and supplication, as we have noted before ACTS. As I examine my prayer life, I want to include all these elements in what I include as prayer. Timothy also is reminded of God s will and His will for us all salvation and encounter with the Truth. These are not earned but are offered as gifts, for which I can ask and receive. The reason for it is the reminder that Jesus is the one mediator, the savior. As labor talks, contracts are often brokered by a mediator or arbitrator, so Jesus represents us, has done all is required, and only asks us to sign on. In Paul s words it leads us to more quiet and tranquil lives.
