While the birth of our Lord and St. John the Baptist are recorded in Sacred Scripture, the birth of the Mother of God has come to us only from non-scriptural sources. The Icon of the Feast is based upon these sources. The icon of the Nativity of the Mother of God shows St. Anne reclining on a bed with an attendant at her side. The Virgin is generally represented in swaddling clothes, and in the arms of a midwife who is seated on a stool. Saint Joachim is presented speaking with his wife. The midwife is reduced in size to focus attention on the holy parents and infant. In icons, the importance of a person is indicated by size. Size is not a physical feature of a person, but a qualitative element relating to importance. St. Anne gazes downward upon her newborn daughter. The servant in the middle stands ready to assist the mother. Saturday is a Solemn Holyday. The liturgy will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Mirovanijje $$ from next weekend will be sent to the Hudson chapter of Sleepers in September, promoting safe sleep environments for infants from needy families.

PARISH INFORMATION Although Labor Day is not a religious holiday per se, our Church has much to say about how Jesus regarded human work and those who do that work. In chapter six of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace writes that work is a fundamental right for all men and women and that work is an expression of our human dignity. It also says that Jesus was a man of work and that in his preaching Jesus teaches that we should appreciate work. As we recall from scripture, Jesus himself worked as a carpenter for many years before he began his ministry. Throughout his ministry, Jesus often told parables about those who work and the dignity of the work they do. He also spoke of work being our way of caring for God s creation and participating in our world and the human experience. Work is a fundamental right a good for mankind, a useful good, worthy of man because it is an appropriate way for him to give expression to and enhance his human dignity. the Pontifical Council writes. The Church teaches the value of work not only because it is always something that belongs to the person but also because of its nature as something necessary. This Labor Day we pray for the dignity of all those who work the stay-at-home parents, the restaurant and hotel staff, our teachers and bus drivers, our safety and medical emergency forces, our volunteers, our priests and religious, our nation s leaders and all who contribute to keeping our society moving forward.
