From the desk of Father James I want to first begin by thanking everyone that worked so hard to put on an amazing school auction this past Saturday, October. 22. It was truly an amazing evening. Everything came together beautifully. Thank you to Michael Corella and Jasmine Utberg for leading their amazing crew in making this possible. This was one of the most successful auctions that our school has had. We had just about 200 in attendance and we raised just over $180,000!! This will indeed help our school tremendously in the year to come. We will have a more complete breakdown of the auction results in the next bulletin. We also had a number of tables with people from the parish in attendance, including 2 tables that were sponsored by our own Knights of Columbus Council. Many of our parishioners that attended the auction for the first time were blown away by the event. Maybe you might be interested in attending next year? Stay tuned, I must say that it is one of the best parties of the year, never too early to start thinking about 2017. Shifting gears, I want to take a moment to invite you to two upcoming celebrations that we will have this coming week. On Tuesday, November 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints Day. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in which we remember all the holy men and women that have contributed to the life of the Church. We often celebrate particular saints by name throughout the Liturgical Year, but there is no way to remember all of them. Hence we have this one day in the Church year in which all the saints are remembered. You can join the St. Francis School kids for Mass at 8:30 am or you can come at 7:00 pm in the evening. On Wednesday, November 2, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. While this is not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is a wonderful time to gather with our community to remember those that have passed away and to implore God to have mercy on their souls. Please plan to attend Mass at 7:00 pm in the Church. There will be NO morning Mass and NO confessions that evening, we will only have the one 7:00 pm Mass. Envelopes are available around the church for remembering the souls of the dead during the month of November. These envelopes will be present at all Masses during the month. In the Spirit of St. Francis To Kristie Greenslitt for making beautiful rosary used to hand out in the chapel. To Carlotta Delos Reyes and Amy Cookson for the flowers for the church. To the Kindergarteners for cleaning the pews in the church. To Terry and Carol Miller for helping with the Communion Services while Deacon Bill was on vacation. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! How to Pray the Rosary The use of beads or knotted ropes to count large numbers of prayers comes from the earliest days of Christianity, but the rosary as we know it today emerged in the second thousand years of Church history. St. Pope John Paul II introduced the Luminous Mysteries in 2002. Traditionally, the rosary is divided into three sets of mysteries: Joyful - Monday, Saturday and Sundays during Advent; Sorrowful - Tuesday, Friday, and Sundays during Lent; Glorious - (Wednesday and Sundays from Easter until Advent). Luminous - Thursdays 3

In the traditional calendar, many of the feasts between mid-september and the First Sunday in Advent make reference to conflicts between Christianity and Islam, and great victories in battles in which the Church-and, more broadly, Christendom-was threatened. The memory of these events turns our thoughts to the end times, when the Church will undergo trials and tribulations before the return of Christ the King. It may not be obvious how dedicating October to the Holy Rosary fits into this pattern. But the rosary and, more specifically, Our Lady of the Rosary is credited with victory in a number of the battles that those feasts celebrate. Chief among these is the Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571), in which a Christian fleet defeated a superior Ottoman Muslim fleet and stopped the westward expansion of Islam in the Mediterranean. In honor of the victory, Pope Pius V instituted the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, which is still celebrated today as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). And, in 1883, when Pope Leo XIII officially dedicated the month of October to the Holy Rosary, he made reference to the battle and the feast. The best way to celebrate the Month of the Holy Rosary is, of course, to pray the rosary daily. 4

Care Ministry St. Francis Honored at Neighbor 2 Neighbor Day Kickoff Community Connection s & Faith in Action s (CCFIA) Neighbor 2 Neighbor Day on Saturday October 1 was a big success. 135 local volunteers from faith communities, Sherwood Rotary, the YMCA and Sherwood High School came together to serve 35 homes of older adults. During the kickoff to Neighbor 2 Neighbor Day we celebrated with Kathy Watson, manager of CCFIA, the 15th Anniversary of Faith in Action in Sherwood. She recognized the Sherwood Visionaries who in 2001 came together to form an assistance program for adults, 60 years and over, with aging and health issues. St. Francis was one of four churches who started Faith in Action in 2001, with four members actively involved on the Faith in Action Board (Frances Jewell, Arlene Voelker, Betty Couch and Barbara Booth). Kathy Watson publicly recognized the important impact these ladies had on home services for older adults in Sherwood, with Frances Jewell being a special guest at the kickoff. Fifteen years later, this program continues today by helping older adults with transportation and some light yard work or maintenance, so adults can thrive in their own homes and local communities. St. Francis Church recently joined the CCFIA Coalition, which encompasses faith communities, businesses and industry partners in Newberg, Sherwood and King City. We look forward to many more years of collaboration with CCFIA, working with community groups to better serve the needs of older adults in the local area. If you would like more information about CCFIA s services or would like to volunteer as a transportation driver, to do light housework, or to help with the next Neighbor 2 Neighbor Day on May 13, 2017, please contact Jennifer Mirek in the parish office. HOPE DINER: A place for people hungry for food and friendship, Sundays - 5:00 pm at the Old Hall. All are welcome. Hosts: St Francis Team 2 We are still in need of volunteers for the Hope Shelter. There are many aspects of this ministry for an individual or family to get involved with! If you are interested please contact Anna Wilson (contact information is listed above). As the weather turns colder and coffee orders change from iced to piping hot, needs for the vulnerable in our community are also changing. As we transition into fall and winter we are in need of warmer clothes to provide at the Hope Shelter and the Food Pantry clothing closet. We would love to take your gently used jackets, boots, warm shirts, pants, water proof clothing, etc. We would also love donations of new socks, underwear, hygiene products (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products). Our guests often also need sleeping bags, tarps, tents, backpacks. Please bring donations to the old hall during pantry hours or to Anna Wilson in the church office. 5

Autumn in New York Thank you to everyone who helped make this year s auction a huge success. It is humbling to see what people can do when they come together to fulfill God s work. Respect Life "The concerns for nonviolence, sustainable development, justice and peace, and care for our environment are of vital importance for humanity. They cannot, however, be understood apart from a profound reflection upon the innate dignity of every human life from conception to natural death: a dignity conferred by God Himself and thus inviolable." ~ Pope Benedict XVI, Sydney, Australia, July 17, 2008 Sunday, October 30 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 595 Pure water is the world s first and foremost medicine.
