Tony Herold The story is told that when the painter Leonardo Da Vinci was painting The Last Supper, he had an intense and bitter argument with a fellow painter. Da Vinci began to think of a way to get back at this guy. He came up with a devious plan. He decided to paint the face of his enemy as the face of Judas Iscariot so it would be captured for all time, and that is exactly what he did. When people came to look at his work, while it was still in progress, they immediately knew who "Judas" was. Da Vinci got great joy out of portraying this man as Judas Iscariot. But as he continued his work on the painting of Jesus and his disciples, he finally came to the face he had saved for the very end-the face of Jesus. But he drew a mental blank. He had what writers call "writer's block." He could not paint a thing. Finally, God convicted him and showed him the trouble was he had painted the face of his enemy as the face of Judas Iscariot. He realized that his hatred and bitterness was keeping him from being able to paint the face of Christ. So he went back to the image of Judas and painted some nebulous face. He went to his painter enemy, asked forgiveness, and they were reconciled. Then he went back and could clearly paint the face of Christ and finish one of the world's greatest portraits. This story illustrates an important principle from our gospel today. Our Lord understood that whatever we do to the least among us even our enemies as we hear about in our Gospel today somehow has a boomerang effect on ourselves. We are all in this together. In the Lord s Prayer we pray that our Heavenly Father would forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. People hurt us. We hurt other people. In God s kingdom enemies must be forgiven and we must learn to live in peace. Given our present acerbic political climate we have plenty of opportunities to practice this principle that the Lord gives us in our Gospel today. Almost every time we turn on the news (whether it is fake or not) we have an opportunity once again to forgive. When we hear a speech from our president or other political leaders, we have another opportunity to forgive. When we enter conversations that go south, we have an opportunity to forgive. When we look into the mirror we also should forgive. School Principal Julie Delaney, 322-2923 Email: julie.delaney@st-paul.pvt.k12.ia.us Parish Prayer Chain Jean Jackson (563) 324-4042 Questions to ponder this week: Why would Jesus tell you to Love your enemies? Who lives like that? Did Jesus show us a new revolutionary kind of acting when he showed us how to love our enemies? How far was he willing to go for them with his radical self-emptying? How far was the Father willing to go for his children?

Haiti Happenings - Update on our sister parish, St. Francis Recently, two St. Paul parishioners had the pleasure of attending Mass at our sister parish, St. Francis in Couette, Haiti. Their tiny little structure was alive with music, song, clapping and a faithful joy that made the worship special. After Mass, St. Francis parish leaders proudly gave a tour of the small village of Couette with most of the residents tagging along. A meeting was also held with the area priest, Fr. Ansene Beneche, to discuss future plans and ideas as to how we can expand and deepen our sister parish relationship. Our parishioners also had a very fun and heartfelt visit to a primary school just 100 yards from St. Francis. We will tell you all about this visit and the good things that are brewing for our students at St. Paul School in our next Haiti Happenings. We still desperately need more people involved on our sister parish committee! You don t have to go to Haiti to be a great deal of help. If you do want to visit the beautiful mountains of Haiti, there is one spot left for a trip from June 9 June 17, 2017. Please call Don Blough (563) 320-7265 or Tara Gruefe (563) 340-5704.
