On this Easter Sunday, after forty days absence, we welcome back the Alleluia, best translated as praise be God! And on this day, more than any other, we praise God for what God has done for us. Even with the gift of faith, we know that much of life is touched with mystery. Perhaps the greatest mystery is that God sent His Son to suffer and to die for our sins. In his writings, St Paul comes back to this theme over and again: it is only through suffering and death that we come to the glory of the Resurrection. In the words of St John s Gospel (3:16): God so loved the world that He sent His only son so that whoever believes in Him might have eternal life. On this day, more than any other, we proclaim our belief in Jesus as our Savior and pledge that we will strive to live in His grace. We are destined for union with God, with the saints, and with our own beloved dead. In the words of the catechism: we are to know, love, and serve God in this world so that we will be happy with Him in the next world. Our celebration of Easter does not require the shopping, gift-giving, greeting cards, and round of get-togethers that characterize Christmas. Purchasing Easter foods and preparing baskets for children is much less demanding. On this day, more than any other, we have the time to reflect on what our faith in the Resurrection means. The traditional Easter hymns are glorious. Lilies and spring flowers fill our church. We welcome the newly baptized in our midst. This year the following became Catholic at our Easter Vigil Mass: Andrew Bowser, Robin Delciappo, Ashley Ellerman, Jane Mahnke, Meriah Molnar, Angela Newsome, James Smith and Joseph Roth. And each one of us also has the opportunity to re-enlist as Christians by solemnly renewing our baptismal promises! The large crowds on this day, more than any other, tell us that something real and important is being celebrated. We gather with a community that reminds us of the sacredness of life. The newly blessed paschal candle symbolizes that Christ is our everlasting light. That candle illumines our baptism and our funeral. Jesus has promised that those living waters of Easter will satisfy all our thirsts. St Augustine once wrote Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee. Nothing earthly can fully satisfy that restlessness, even though so many things in our culture claim they can. The current political campaigns indicate that people want to be a part of something that is life-changing. The Eucharist is to be the source and summit of the Christian life. A recent study indicates that eighty-two percent of people say they would come to church if invited by a friend. This day, more than any other, welcome a person you do not know. Make the effort to greet others and to help people feel valued. The spirit of true community grows when people are made to feel welcome. Especially during this Year of Mercy, if you have been away from the Church, Jesus longs for your return. In His words, come to me, I will give you rest, my yoke is easy and my burden light. The Church, the community of God s people, is incomplete without you. On this day, more than any other, consider coming home. Blessed and joyous Easter! Thank You!

St. Charles Borromeo Church March 27, 2016 2016 FIRST STEP PROGRAMS: CONTINUING EDUCATION REGARDING MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DURING THE HOLY YEAR, THE JUBILEE OF MERCY During this Holy Year, the Jubilee of Mercy, we are called to renew our relationship with God and the Church. Attempting to pick up the pieces of one s life after the tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person s relationship with God and the Church. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland, especially during this Jubilee of Mercy, offers its First Step Program in order to help individuals deal with these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen their relationship with God and the Church. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain the resources they offer to the divorced. Everyone is welcome to: Deepen knowledge of the Church s teaching on marriage Learn about the Church s ministry to the divorced/separated in the Diocese Hear about the annulment process and how to submit a case Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to strengthen and/or renew a relationship with God and the Church In any endeavor, taking the first step is always the most difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals to navigate the path of healing and closure. Please refer to the Tribunal website (www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal) for testimonials about the program from past participants. The schedule for the remaining general meetings in 2016 is: Thursday, 19 May 2016, at St. Noel Parish, Willoughby Hills, at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, 13 September 2016, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Cuyahoga Falls, at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, 18 October 2016, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 p.m. Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer requires any fees for this process. For more information check our website: www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal Or call the Tribunal: 216-696-6525/800-869-6525, ext. 4000
