St David s Uniting Connects to Community Through Children s Art Classes Redcliffe Uniting Community Fund (RUCF) has helped St David s Uniting Church in Coopers Plains connect to families in their community by running a summer holiday art group for children. The $1,000 RUCF grant facilitated 15 children aged seven to 12 to attend a low-cost three-day painting group conducted by professional art teachers in January. RUCF, a fund made up of donations and bequests from past members and friends of Redcliffe Uniting Church, has given away more than $500,000 to Uniting Church, community and overseas projects since 2012. Convenor of the inaugural Creative Kids painting program, Robyn Solomon, said the children practiced new techniques to express themselves through art as well as played games and participated in daily devotions to learn about Jesus. The creative sessions were led by a teacher from Raw Art who works with children in schools and libraries, and by other facilitators who taught bead work, card and mobile making, Robyn said. The children made a chalk drawing of their face, a clay sculpture of their initials, an acrylic painting in the style of Picasso, modelled Australian native animals out of clay and painted night blooming flowers on black card. The feedback was very positive with one child commenting that it was the best three days of my life and another asking when can I come again?. Robyn said the Creative Kids program was an excellent way to make new connections with local families. Only three of the children enrolled were from our congregation, the rest were from the community. Two families identified as agnostic but were happy for their children to join in devotions, she said. The children had the opportunity to display their masterpieces to parents and friends at an exhibition on the final day of the program. to the world in the power of the Spirit to see lives transformed.
