Q&A with Seminarian and Ascension Parishioner Joe Lemmer Q: Where are you at in your seminary forma on? A: I ll be star ng my third year at the St. John Vianney College Seminary this fall. I ll be spending half of the upcoming year studying and living in Rome with nine of my seminarian brothers. Q: You ve been in the seminary for two years now. What s the experience been like? A: It s been incredible. Through seminary God has blessed me with some of the strongest friendships I ve ever experienced and invites me to draw closer to him each day in our morning holy hour and Mass. Q: Why do you believe God is calling you to be a priest? A: I feel a very strong desire for priesthood and feel a lot of peace and joy when I think about it, especially when I think about celebra ng the Sacraments, specifically the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. I feel a very strong desire to serve God s people in this way. Q: What s been most difficult? A: I ve had difficulty in finding me for solitude. At the college seminary, we have a policy where the doors to our rooms must be open throughout the day unless we re studying. This is to encourage fraternity and to keep men accountable with purity. With this policy, it s very difficult to find quiet me by myself, which is something I enjoy. Q: So, you re a seminarian are you s ll a normal person? A: As normal as anyone else! Seminarians aren t cloistered, quiet men who only do church stuff. We have men of all sorts of personali es with all sorts of interests, from hun ng and fishing to playing sports (we even had a seminarian who was on the St. Thomas football team). We watch movies and joke around. We re just regular people. Q: So, do seminarians lose all a rac on towards women? A: Absolutely not. As seminarians we re asked to prac ce celibacy, since we ll poten ally live that way in priesthood. This doesn t mean we don t have any a rac on; it means we take our a rac on and offer it to the Lord. A big part of seminary is learning how to have healthy rela- onships with women amidst our a rac on. When I first entered seminary, the only way I knew how to pray was to recite prayers like the Rosary. Through several retreats, spiritual direc on, and in the daily habit of prayer, I ve learned how prayer can be taken deeper and more personal. I s ll have a long way to grow, but I trust the Lord will take me there. Q: How can we foster priestly voca ons? A: Young men need to see the priesthood lived out joyfully. All the priests that have prompted me to consider and desire priesthood were so joyful and it was very evident they loved being priests.

Feast of St. Bernard This August we are focusing on the Bread of Life discourse in John 6. Therefore, we will not celebrate the Feast of St Bernard on Sunday this year. We will celebrate it on Monday August 20th at our 8am Mass. Those who are able are encouraged to come. School Cleanup on Wednesday, August 22nd. In preparation for the start of Faith Formation in September, we have scheduled two sessions on August 22nd for anyone who is available and can help clean up and prepare the classrooms at St. Bernard. Session 1 will be from 9:30am to noon. Pizza will be provided for lunch. If needed, there will be a second session from 6:30-8:30pm to finish any leftover tasks from the morning session.
