Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. Twientieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018 Pastor s Note HEALTHY FOOD AND THE SPIRITUALITY FORMATION COUNCIL Dear Friends, This weekend's first reading personifies wisdom. Wisdom has set a table and invites all to turn in here. The wine and food are the wise sayings, the spirit of the relationship with God which will result in deeper understanding and liveliness. This "food and the wine are meant to resist the normal manners by which the foolish feed themselves. The foolish may feed themselves on vengeance, greed, and other unsatisfying base energies. The table is set by wisdom for those who want to eat more of the goodness of life. They reverse the reader and turn her or his mind towards heartful rather than headful luncheons. Today's Gospel also invites us to feed on the life giving bread of life. A true pastor's and spiritual leader's role is to provide good food for the spiritual nourishment of the community. With this realization in mind and in line with the pastoral plan formulated a couple of years ago by St. Martin's parish, the need to form a Spiritual Formation Council was felt. The purpose of Spirituality Formation Council will be to vision adult faith formation beyond Sacramental preparation. The Council will facilitate and provide opportunities for the parish community to learn and discover life-giving spiritual habits that lead us into a deeper relationship with God and others. Activities of the Council may include but not limited to retreats, parish missions, reflections by the laity during Advent and Lent, bulletin thoughts, Taize, study session for adults on various Church documents and books, providing techniques to parents to walk with children and teens in their faith journey, teaching methods of prayer usable in busy life and so on. Eighteen members of the community met last Sunday with the intention of forming the council and to formulate plans. Please keep the team and the process in your prayers. My hope and prayer that this Council will address the need to feed the adults in their spiritual hunger beyond Sunday Mass. Faith Formation Corner We are now celebrating the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time and for this week s Faith Formation Corner we have another reflection from one of our RCIA participants. Doug participated in our RCIA program this past year and supported his wife Lily as she received all her Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and 1 st Communion) at the Easter Vigil. Please see his reflection on his own experience below: Reflections on RCIA I am a cradle Catholic. Our family of five dutifully attended church every Sunday, my brother, sister, and I went to Catholic school up through the ninth grade. I attended a private, Catholic university. Until college, I never questioned my faith. In grammar school, our Catholic education centered around the Baltimore Catechism, Sister Mary so and so, and Monsignor s homilies and occasional visits to our classrooms. In college, away from home, I was free to make my own choices about my Catholic practice and faith. After a classmate was killed in a river rafting accident, while listening to the pastor s homily at his funeral Mass, I realized that I had very little understanding of my faith. I stopped going to church and became somewhat indifferent about my faith. Recently, my wife of almost 20 years, announced she wanted to become a Catholic. I was surprised, but I understood and wanted to support her. I also wondered if her process would rekindle my faith in some way. She joined the St. Martins RCIA group and I agreed to attend the sessions with her. The RCIA process was transforming. Daniel and Jarred offered a mix of practical information about the Catholic faith, and teachings about the grace and love from God that is so much a part of our Church. Daniel and Jarred encouraged our input about our understanding of Sunday readings, and the information from the many handouts. They taught us how to pray. Deep in my heart, throughout my 40 years of indifference, I knew intellectually that the Catholic faith made the most sense to me, compared to my understanding of other Christian belief systems. I always appreciated the balance between the teachings of the bible, our catechism, and our traditions, and our evolving culture. But, I never knew of the love that is so much a part of our faith. Daniel and continued. Jarred, through the RCIA classes, taught us about this love and grace that comes from our Lord. Mixed in with the intellectual knowledge of bible history, the sacraments, the traditions of the Church and the Mass, was the teaching that God loves us, bestows His grace upon us, and that Christ is present in our lives, always. The 10-year-old never learned this, the 20-year-old never understood this, but this 62-year-old knows this. I have Daniel, Jarred, my wife and the other attendees of the RCIA class to thank for that. I am truly grateful. -Doug If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA process, but not sure where to begin please contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org. As always, if you have a question or comment, please email Daniel or Megan. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults As we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time we invite you to be a part of the next group learning about what it means to be Catholic. Please see our Faith Formation Corner for a moving reflection from one of our participants in RCIA last year! that participated in RCIA last year! If interested, please contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org.
