A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Thank you to all who came and enjoyed the Marathon last weekend. Thanks to the KCs for the luncheon. I have recently been asked what is the proper way to show reverence when entering the Church of St. Peter s sanctuary. This question has made it clear that our current practice of bringing the Blessed Sacrament into the sanctuary before Mass can lead to confusion since we do not have a tabernacle in the sanctuary. At the Mass, our Catholic faith tells us that the hosts become Jesus body at the words of consecration, This is My Body and the wine become His Blood at the words This is My Blood ". This leads to the need to properly reserve the extra Eucharistic hosts after the Mass. The Church teaches that the only proper place is in the tabernacle, a special safe, of sorts, that protects the Eucharist from theft and misuse, but provides a place for the faithful to remember Christ is present and worship Him. The Church teaches that the tabernacle can be either in the sanctuary as at St. Paul s or in a separate chapel, as at St. Peter s. You may have noticed after communion an Extraordinary Minister carrying the extra consecrated hosts to place it in the tabernacle. Our practice has been to bring the consecrated hosts in a covered paten - the plate that holds the hosts - and place it on the credence table, located to the side near the server s chairs, prior to Mass beginning. This leads to the questions as to if we should bow to the Altar or genuflect to Jesus s presence on the credence table, or if people are even aware that Jesus is already present in the Blessed Sacrament by our placing the Eucharist there. Until I could consult with Bishop LeVoir who was away, I placed a candle beside the consecrated host to signify the presence of Jesus body. Last week, I was able to speak to the Diocesan Director of Liturgy who gave me Bishop s immediate directions. Bishop LeVoir has directed us to not expose the consecrated hosts during Mass as our current practice might be seen to do, even unintentionally. If there are consecrated hosts remaining from previous Masses, we will bring in those hosts at the Sign of Peace. We are also encouraged to consecrate only what is needed for those attending that Mass and taking to the sick and homebound, so that all, as much as possible, can receive newly consecrated hosts. This is something that I hope we can strive to do because it shows the connection between the sacrifice of the Mass and the people gathered for that Mass more clearly. To answer the original question, the proper sign of reverence is to bow to the Altar in the Church of St. Peter, since the tabernacle containing the Eucharist is not present, and genuflect to the Eucharist in the tabernacle in the Sanctuary in any church that has it, such as St. Paul s. I hope that these changes and clarifications will help us grow in our Eucharistic devotion and understanding, recognizing the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. For those who wish time to pray with the Blessed Sacrament, as always please feel free to visit the Chapel and take some time before or after Mass or during office hours, and of course take part in Adoration on Thursdays from 1-10 pm. 5 Reasons Why We Should Try to Go To Daily Mass http://salinadiocese.org/new-evangelization/2108-5- reasons-to-attend-daily-mass I ve been going to daily Mass for the greater part of twenty years. In the days and weeks after September 11, my soul was touched by the number of people who also began attending. I thought I understood God s purpose in allowing that evil day to happen. It seemed the churches were half-full, at daily Masses. I wondered why they we not completely full. Then, as things seem to brighten and become more stable, the churches gradually emptied again. I guess we really didn t understand God s love and protection are the only real stability we will ever know in life. So, below are five reasons I go to daily Mass. I believe they are five of the same reasons you, also, might consider. 1. Receiving Christ in the Blessed Eucharist gives us the strength to fight selfish pride and sin. 2. Praising God first thing in the morning is the most important thing on our daily calendar. 3. The Mass is my ongoing spiritual formation. 4. The Mass heals. 5. You meet your Creator, your friend, your love. Fatima Centennial All are invited to join Bishop LeVoir in prayer and procession to mark the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima Apparitions on Friday, October 13 at 7pm in Sleepy Eye. An optional shuttle from St. Mary s to Schoenstatt will be available from 6:15 pm to 6:50 pm to allow participant to park at St. Mary s where the procession will end.
