Grand Knight P. J. Carter I would like to congratulate Bob Leo for being voted Knight of the Month for December, and Knight of the Fourth Quarter. I would also like to congratulate Otto and Inez Storr for being voted Family of the Month for December. As most of you know we had a busted pipe at the hall that created a big mess and caused us to close bingo for that week. I want to thank all those who helped clean the hall up. Those were John Bennett, Tau Iosia, Bob Leo and thanks to Pete Nause for finding the problem. Our State Convention is coming up in April and we are going to ask for nominations for Knight of the Year and Family of the year during our February meetings. We will also need the best project reports from all directors. Thank You and keep warm P. J. Carter Chaplain Fr. Francis Cosgrove Welcome Bishop Joseph Kopacz Dear Brother Knights, Our new Bishop, Most Rev. Joseph Kopacz will be ordained and installed as the eleventh bishop of Jackson on Thursday February 6 th at 12:00 p.m. at Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle in Jackson. Archbishop Thomas Rodi of Mobile will be the principal ordaining bishop. He will be joined by several other bishops from around the country including the Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S., Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano and by Bishops Latino and Houck and the priests of our diocese. Bishop Kopacz comes to us with a long list of qualifications. The two that impress me most are that he has served as a pastor in several parishes and that he was Director of Hispanic Ministry in Scranton. - Father Jim Price of Scranton, who was on our recent Holy Land Pilgrimage, knows Bishop Kopacz and gives him a glowing reference. - There are three steps or levels in this Sacrament of Holy Orders: Deacon, priest and bishop. Pope Francis is the Bishop of the Diocese of Rome as well as being the Vicar of Christ for our Universal Church. I suggest that Council 802 send a letter of welcome and an offer of service to Bishop Kopacz and a letter of appreciation to Bishop Latino for his ten years of service in our Diocese. The ordination of Bishop Kopacz will be streamed on the Internet at WWW.BISHOPKOPACZORDINATION.ORG. If you have a fast Internet connection, please join us in watching this on your computer. Father Frank Please continue to pray for vocations. We need more priests

Fourth Degree Tom Zettler, PSD Once again I have the sad duty of starting my monthly article with the reporting of the death of one of our Sir Knights. Sir Knight George A. Polizzi went to his eternal reward the first week of January. The Assembly (and Council) participated in a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, January 7. His wife, Kathy and son Tony were in attendance in addition to his brother Frank and sister Linda as well as many members of the Assembly and Council. An Honor Guard consisting of Sir Knights Roland Stewart, P. J. Carter, Larry Birzer, Bob Connor, Richard Moody, Jack LeGuin, Tom Zettler and under the capable leadership of Honor Guard Commander, Bob Leo were present and participated at his wake service at the funeral home. May he have eternal peace. On Saturday, January 11, members of the Assembly gathered at the Ole Farm Beef House for our annual holiday dinner. Although attendance was down everyone who took part seemed to have had a very enjoyable time with fellowship and good food. The New Year is well underway and we all look forward to a successful and rewarding 2014. Vivat Jesus, Tom Zettler, PSD Seminarians Corner Nick Adam Sub George Walston In Memoriam for Claudia Adam April 2nd, 1947 January 22nd, 2014 I m sure that most, if not all, of our local members have heard the news about Nick s mother s death. About twenty five of us from St. Patrick in Meridian travelled to Elberta, AL, just south of Mobile, on Friday to attend her Funeral Mass. Some went on the Church bus driven by Tom Zettler, PSD, while others travelled in their private cars. Fr. Matthew Simmons also came over from Jackson to join Fr. Frank and Fr. Suresh on the Altar as Concelebrants for the Mass. The Mass was beautiful and included four students from St. Benedict School across the street from the church who led the singing for the Mass. Rosary was said prior to Mass. May her soul and the souls of all the Faithful Departed through the mercy of God Rest in Peace Amen

Community Bob Leo Brother Knights, Now that the holidays are over we will continue our regular visits to the residents of East Mississippi State Hospital. In the coming months, I would expect to see an increase in the amount of brother Knights that go to visit the residents that are confined there. During the latter part of last year our numbers dwindled from at least 7-8 brother knights, to 3-4. This is not acceptable. We are a council of 140+ local members, so, if we cannot get at least 10 members to visit the sick and infirmed, then there is something drastically wrong. Remember the first principle of our order is "Charity" and this would be a good time to practice it. We meet every 4th Thursday at 6:00 P.M. at the Hospital by the soccer complex in Meridian. If you are not sure how to get there, ask any Brother knight, or call me at C- 601-616-8396, H- 601-737-5253. We will be visiting again on February 27th. Please try to join us, or at least come out and see what we do. Keep in mind this month we will be seeking nominations for the Burns award, so this is something to think about. Bob Leo Community Director Bingo Bob Leo Last month (Jan.) our bingo sessions were cut rather short. We held only three sessions out of five. This was due to the Holidays and also an unexpected event, a broken water pipe that shut us down for another week. So, the year 2014 did not get off to a very good start for the program. But one bright spot, was seeing some new knights at the session when we did open up. I would like to thank those new Brother Knights that came and helped us out. They were Frank Sharp, Sal Moreno and his lovely wife Liberty, and Trevor Gibson. Also, for those new Brothers, I have some openings that need to be filled. One of these is at the office cashiers window. Roland Stewart has been doing it by himself all this time. I also need someone to train for the front door window, at this time my wife Rosalie is manning that window with PJ Carter, I don't know how long she will be doing it, so I need a back up. If you are interested in anyone of these openings please let me know. Bob Leo Bingo Manager

Dave Membership Chairman Pro Life Darrell Hover Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. These three rights are strongly defended and loved by the American people. In fact, we have fought wars and risked lives to protect them. As we recall the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the court case that legalized abortion, we must ask ourselves: what about the rights of the 56 million babies who have been killed since 1973? During the Second World War, America helped put an end to the cruel concentration camps in Europe. Yet today, an even greater, silent holocaust is waged within our very own borders. Every year, over a million babies are aborted. In short, the most fundamental right, that of life, which is the basis of all the others, is being denied to our own people. Some may ask whether the unborn child is really a human. The answer is yes. Science tells us that the unborn baby has a distinct, unchanging, and unrepeatable genetic code, unique in all of history, from the moment of conception till death. Many say that a woman has the right to choose. And what of the baby s right? Even more, it is illegal in this country to harm the un-hatched eggs of an eagle. Why then, is it legal to kill an unborn child, who is more precious than any bird? Should life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness be denied to our unborn babies? To answer in the affirmative would be highly un-american and simply immoral. Darrell

Youth David Klutz Well by the time you read this hopefully we will have completed a very successful Free Throw Contest at St. Patrick's School. I will include the details and winners in next month's newsletter. In case you didn't hear the school was awarded a $500 ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grant thanks to the hard work of Mr. Ken Anderson with Lipscomb Oil and Exxon Filling Station #42. The money will be used to support the school's current educational program. Thanks Mr. Anderson! Also in school news remember it is Catholic Schools Week January 26-January 31st. Hopefully you came out to some of the great events through the week...like the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest. In Boy Scouts news several Knights helped our local Cub Scouts with their preparations with the Pinewood Derby. Joe Price, Larry Birzer, Roland Stewart, John Price, Donna Polizzi, and Frank Polizzi spent the day at the Knights of Columbus Hall conducting a pinewood derby work shop. Cub Scout Pack 7 are now preparing the cars for the upcoming race. Last week I made a presentation to our PSR 8-12 classes about next month's Knights of Columbus Essay Contest. In case you missed it in the bulletin the topic is "The Importance of Religious Freedom" and the deadline is February 7th. If you know a Catholic student in grades 8-12 contact me to get a registration form. Thanks again to Cindy and Steven Slimp for volunteering to be judges in this event. Our Catholic Youth of Meridian group will be attending Abbey Youth Fest March 22 in Covington, Louisiana. Make sure you remember them in your prayers. Dave Klutz Youth Chairman Family Roland Stewart (No Report this month/see Council Below) Council Greg Stephens Hi folks. Just returning from the Grand Cayman Islands, much better weather than home. A quick reminder to all to attend the Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 2nd starting at 3pm. Come and support your team. Also, I have several squares left on the pool. I'll be selling them at bingo and on game day. Also, on Friday, February 15th we will have our annual "Sweetheart Night. The event will begin at 7pm at the KC Hall. The ladies may dress up a little if they like or not and the men should be in their KC shirts. (aka: servant's uniforms). There will be great food and fun with a "Knights Auction", the ladies can rent a handyman for any 4 hours of their choosing. There will also be a Black Jack event using funny money where the ladies may win bottles of wine. The men who do not want to be auctioned off will need to donate $25. All proceeds will go to the Priest Education Fund as usual. Anyone with ideas or suggestions please email me at g.stephens46@gmail.com Greg Stephens Council Chairman
