Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In recent weeks Hurricane Matthew and other storms have devastated significant portions of the southeastern United States and the Caribbean, especially Haiti. While many have begun to assist, we realize that the road to restoration will be long, and additional support will be needed. To help with this process of recovery, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called for a special collection, which will be taken up in our parishes on the weekend of November 5-6. These funds will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA, as they reach out to provide humanitarian aid; help in restoring communities that have suffered widespread destruction; and assist in the repair and reconstruction of Catholic churches and institutions. As always, I am grateful for the generosity shown by the people of the Diocese of Erie. You and your families remain in my prayer. Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop Lawrence T. OUR LADY OF MERCY CHURCH Reflections: Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector, the ultimate sinner according to the small-minded religious leaders. Yet this little man was attracted to Jesus and was even willing to go out on a limb to see him. Jesus did not pass him by or regard him unworthy of his attention. Jesus came to search out the sinner and save the lost. Though people were quick to judge Zacchaeus, he stood his ground. He was not the scoundrel they thought him to be. He gave to the poor and treated others fairly. If he cheated anyone, he made amends. Because of his honest estimation of himself, salvation came to Zacchaeus house that day, for this is what it means to be a person of faith. Paul prayed constantly that the church would be made worthy at the coming of the Lord in judgment. He prayed that God would accept every good work performed with honest intention. The psalmist declares that the Lord is slow to anger and shows great kindness to the sinner. God loves every created thing, but more than that. God is compassionate toward all who repent, For Reflection: Have I made an honest inventory of my soul? Have I repented of any misdeeds? The evening begins in the church with a video by Professor Brené Brown, who has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame. She used her research to explore the following concept: Let go of who you think you are supposed to be and embrace who you are. We continue in Sperry Hall with the sharing of a couple wholehearted stories over a glass of wine, followed by a discussion celebrating our individual giftedness. We promise the evening will be well worth your time. For additional information call Peggy Williams at 490-5504. RSVP to the OLM office or signup in the Gathering Space.
