The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016 Readings: Is 42:1-4,6-7; Acts 10:34-38, Lk 3:15-16,21-22 The Deacon s Speakin The Baptism of the Lord Dear friends, Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus and God s revelation of him as the beloved Son. As we bless ourselves with the water from the font we remember our own baptism when we became God s beloved children. Symbols of baptism: The symbols of the baptismal rite put into focus the primary gifts of baptism the guiding force of the Holy Spirit, a share in divine life. Water plunged into or sprinkled with the baptismal waters we are plunged into Christ s death. Rising we share in His risen life. Water brings both death (to our old selves) and life (new life of rebirth in God). Chrism anointed with Chrism, we share in the threefold office of Christ priest, prophet, king. Our being anointed with Chrism is a consecration of ourselves to conform our life to Christ s White garment clothed in a white garment, we are reminded of our new, risen life in Christ. We have been given a new identity as beloved daughters and sons of God. Lighted candle enlightened by Christ, we are also to be the light of Christ driving away sin and darkness in the world. We are to be living examples that the light of salvation has come into the world. Although all of these symbols also imply the demands of discipleship (water dying to self; Chrism conforming ourselves to Christ; white garment living lives worthy of who we are; lighted candle overcoming the darkness of evil), they primarily help us understand who we become in baptism members of the Body of Christ sharing in divine identity. Greater awareness and appreciation of our identity eases the way for us to be more faithful in our discipleship.
