1 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time November 5, 2017 Readings: MAL 1:14B-2:2B, 8-10; 1 THES 2:7B-9, 13; MT 23:1-12 Deacon s Speakin Dear Sisters and Brothers, This Sunday's Gospel, the first half of Jesus' diatribe against the scribes and the Pharisees, is a dangerous text. Through the past nineteen centuries, many Christians, reading the passage carelessly and out of context, have taken these words as a condemnation of Jews and Judaism and have allowed the language to fuel anti-semitic thoughts and actions. In Matthew 23, Jesus is not censuring Jews in general, but using the sayings of Jesus to critique the Jewish leadership of his own day. Matthew's purpose is to challenge the authorities of his own community to a more authentic leadership. Matthew was working on a new edition of the Gospel of Mark to help his own community live the faith in their circumstances. When he comes to the brief passage in Mark, where Jesus denounces the scribes for their love of honors, abuse of widows, and pious hypocrisy (Mk 12: 38-40), he sees an opportunity to aim this critique of leadership against the leaders of the larger Jewish community of his own day and support the authority of his group, the Christian Jews. Matthew presents what he is convinced is Jesus message to the situation of his own community. The whole Gospel of Matthew says the way to be faithful to the Law of Moses is to do it according to the way of Jesus especially as expressed in the Sermon on the Mount. In chapter 23, Matthew spells out the implications regarding the proper use of authority. Like Malachi (first reading) and Jesus, Matthew denounces hypocritical leaders among his fellow Jews Christian and non-christian. In the spirit of Jesus' teaching about living as a community of disciples ( The greatest among you must be your servant ) Matthew insists that they should avoid the titles claimed by the leadership of the dominant group around them; they should reserve the title Father for God and use Rabbi and Master only for the Messiah. The message is directed to us, not to others. It is a vivid way of reminding us to practice what we preach and to use our authority for service of one another in the spirit of Jesus. Peace and love, Deacon John

Bishop s Annual Appeal Spread the Gospel Be Engaged This is the theme of the Bishop s Annual Appeal that begins now, as we bring to a close our Diocesan 50 th Anniversary Year. We have celebrated the past, present, and now look to the future building upon our rich Catholic heritage with a sense of renewed purpose. Funding our existing and developing ministries is essential. Four areas that rely heavily on your generosity are: Seminarians/Vocations, Catechetics, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and Family Life Ministry. Bishop Armando X. Ochoa invites you into full participation through the gift of your time, treasure, and talents. Please consider giving generously to this year s appeal. It s a wonderful way to spread the Gospel and be engaged in the mission of Christ among us. Hospital Ministry - Fresno Area Since there are no Catholic priests on the pastoral care staff of local hospitals, except St. Agnes Medical Center, Catholics needing hospitalization should arrange in their parish for the Sacrament of Anointing or Reconciliation before entering the hospital for treatment or surgery. The diocese of Fresno provides Catholic priests on call for Community Hospitals in Fresno and Clovis, Kaiser Permanente, Veterans Medical Center, Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital and Valley Children's Hospital, Madera. These priests may be contacted by patients or families needing a priest by asking at the nurses' station or contacting the hospital operator or chaplain's office at the respective hospital. Our wonderful Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick, trained, commissioned and coordinated by Deacon Bill Lucido, provide Communion to our home bound parishioners or those hospitalized or in hospice care or health care facilities. Please contact Deacon Bill at bill@csufnewman.com or our parish office for more information. This past Wednesday we celebrated All Saints day. Fr. Paul Turner educates us on the day throughout history. Liturgical Tidbit All Saints Day By Fr. Paul Turner In designating one day on our calendar for all the saints, the church chooses a time to honor our heroes the men and women whose example we admire. Coming near to the end of our church year, the solemnity of All Saints invites us into the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. An early tradition placed the festival on May 13. According to one story, Pope Boniface IV (himself a saint) began the celebration in Rome. On that date in 609 he dedicated a very old building as a new church. The Pantheon had been built to honor all the pagan gods, but Boniface rededicated the building as a Christian church in the seventh century. He brought the relics of the martyrs from the catacombs to this famous public place of worship. The parade of relics changed the Pantheon from a place for worship of all the pagan gods to a place that honored Mary and all the Christian saints and in turn one Christian God. Eventually the idea of a feast of all saints was transferred to November 1, near the end of the church year. The church honors many saints with a day of their own on the general liturgical calendar, but there are many more saints than those. Since Vatican II, the number of men and women canonized as saints has increased considerably. Although we do not celebrate all their names on specific dates in all our churches throughout the year, we do gather them as one on this day. Secular tradition has turned the eve of All Saints into a kind of anti-festival, a night when heroes of the underworld take command. The Mass for All Saints Day always replaces the one for ordinary time, even when it falls on a Sunday. Father Paul Turner is the pastor of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, Missouri. He is also the Director of Divine Worship of the Diocese. Support Break the Barriers The Knights of Columbus Council 4440 is hosting a dinner fundraiser to benefit Break the Barriers. It will be held on Saturday, November 18 at Break the Barriers (8555 N.
