BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass: part two Last week we explained how many of the ways we feel about, and experience, the Mass are dependent on external factors. The fact is that we are frail human beings and when we come to Church, to enter into this supreme act of worship (which is the Mass), we are immersing ourselves into a heavenly reality. There are two types of preparation (remote and proximate) that are necessary in order for any of us to actively and prayerfully enter this heavenly reality. What is remote preparation? Well a good analogy would be if you are in school and you have a test in the morning. When would you begin to study for the test? The day before or the morning of? Of course, to be prepared for the test, you would definitely begin at least the day before. The same is with the Mass. You don't begin your preparation for the Mass just before you leave your home. Here in the bulletin we list the readings for next Sunday (you can even find them on any number of Catholic websites). Perhaps just taking a look at them, a few days before you come to Mass, will help you familiarize yourself with what the Lord is asking of you. Remember, all scripture contains a challenge to us in our daily living. Also, you have to know (and plan) when you will have your last meal so that when you come to Mass you will be able to receive Holy Communion more than one hour since you last ate. A decision has to be made as to what Mass you are coming too. You don't make that decision five minutes before Mass begins causing you then to be late. No, decide the day before which one you will come to, and what time you need to leave home, to make sure you are on time. Also, what am I going to wear? Unfortunately, many people come to Mass as though they are going to a Mets or Yankees game. At Mass we are going to meet and encounter God. Proximate preparation begins just a short time before the Mass is scheduled to begin. Getting to Church before Mass begins, enables a person to calm themselves down from the hustle and bustle of life. It also enables a person to pray to God for the intentions they are holding in their hearts. Just before the Mass, it is important to close out the outside world by turning off our phones. When God talks to you, He does not need a cell phone or a tablet. Lord of the Miracles Novena and Mass Beginning on Friday, October 14th, and lasting till Friday, October 21st, we will be praying the Novena to the Lord of the Miracles. Each evening our Novena will begin at 7:30pm. On Sunday, October 23rd, we will be having the Mass, to Honor Our Lord of the Miracles, at 1:30pm and the Procession of the Statue will begin right after the Mass. This devotion is important to many in the Hispanic Community (especially to those of Peruvian descent). All are invited to attend. Even if you are not Hispanic, you are most welcome to come and join us. As it is said in Scripture: All you nations ring out your joy to the Lord. Tag Sale Thank you to all those who donated items for our Annual Tag Sale that was held last weekend. Even though the weather did not cooperate with us on Saturday and Sunday, many people came to look for buried treasure. Thank you to all our volunteers who gave of their time and effort to make sure this Tag Sale would be a success. I would like to especially thank Rose and Raymond who spent the whole week getting everything ready and then working the entire weekend. We could not have done it without them. The Tag Sale raised $1,856, for the support of the Parish. Thank you again. Begin saving up your items for next year s Sale.

The Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Formed Do you find yourself wondering aimlessly on the internet? Of course you know that this type of behavior can cause you all sorts of problems. Well, we have a solution for you and a place you can go and learn about our precious Roman Catholic Faith and at the same time enjoy good movies, books and audio. I know it seems like a dream but it is true. The Archdiocese has given each parish a one year subscription to a website called: Formed. You can sign up for free and begin using its content right away. All you have to do is go to the website: www.formed.org Once you get to that website, you put in the Parish Code: WGFJ7N (the Parish Code is case sensitive so make sure the letters are all in caps). It will ask you to register as a user just so they can keep track of what programs are popular and which are not. They also have a number of choices in Spanish. Why not take a look and see what is available. We Need to Update our Census Information It is important that you update your Church registration information. You can come into the Rectory and fill out a new census form or you can even call Teresa (our Office Manager) and she will be happy to send you a new form (or even take the information over the phone); and you can drop off the completed information form, in the collection basket, or bring it to the Rectory. Thank You to John Wolfe Many thanks to John Wolfe, our Organist and Music Director, who played such a wonderful Organ Concert last Sunday. A selection of organ works, composed over a period of four hundred years were performed beautifully. Also, many thanks to Elizabeth Farnum for her solo singing in one of the organ works. PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend By John Wolfe, Organist and Music Director Prelude: Ballo del Granduca, SwWV 319 By Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) Opening Hymn: number 565 Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise Anthem: Verily, Verily I Say Unto You By Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585) Offertory Hymn: number 524 Holy Wisdom, Lamp of Learning Communion Hymn: number 23 Down In Adoration Falling Closing Hymn: number 416 Church of God, Elect and Glorious Postlude: Lord Christ, The Only Son of God, BWV 601 By Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) From the age of fifteen, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was the organist at the Oude Kerk ( Old Church ) in Amsterdam, at a time when the city was as its peak as a cultural capital. His tenure witnessed the official state religion changing from Catholicism to Calvinism, and since the Calvinists forbade organ music during worship, his post consisted almost entirely of giving improvised matinee concerts. The vigorous style he pioneered, in this capacity, marked a critical point in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, owing especially the music s use of repetitive running figures, which give the music perpetual forward motion wonderfully suited to the disposition of keyboard instruments. Prior to this, most organ music had consisted of note-for-note transcriptions of vocal music, or original pieces written in the same style as vocal music. Sweelinck s reputation as The Orpheus of Amsterdam drew students to him from all over Europe, particularly Lutheran North Germany, and his students in turn fanned out to spread the new fortspinning ( spinning out ) style across the continent. Virtually, all Baroque keyboard music displays traces of Sweelinck s innovation, which allowed for endless bedazzlement of simple melodies like the secular dance tunes we hear today.

May God s many blessings and graces be with them as they grow in wisdom and strength. Dillynn Dominguez Congratulations We congratulate those couples who received the Sacrament of Marriage here at Blessed Sacrament recently. Our best wishes goes with them as they have now entered the married life and may God bless them each and every day. Antonio Sune and Danilla Georgieva In Memoriam Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. The following are those who were recently buried from Blessed Sacrament Church. May God strengthen their families in this time of trial. Lynn Sue Hofmeister Wisdom of the Saints Saint Ignatius of Antioch said: It is not that I want merely to be called a Christian, but to actually be one. Yes, if I prove to be one, then I can have the name...come fire, cross, battling with wild beasts, wrenching of bones, mangling of limbs, crushing of my whole body, cruel tortures of the Devil -- Only let me get to Jesus Christ! Do not have Jesus Christ on your lips, and only the world in your hearts. It is better to keep silence and be something than to talk and be nothing.
