Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God January 1, 2017 Readings: Nm 6:22-27, Gal 4:4-7, Lk 2:16-21 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Friends, Since Christmas was on Sunday this year, its octave day, the Solemnity of The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Mother of God, also falls on a Sunday. Therefore, there is no Sunday between Christmas and the solemnity, the day on which we usually celebrate the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This feast is transferred to December 30, a weekday, when most people don t celebrate Mass. Not to worry, in a real way this Sunday s celebration is also a festival honoring the Holy Family. Mary is the Mother of this family. She is the Mother of God. She is the Mother of the Church. She is the Mother of each of us. Her motherhood is not limited to the Holy Family, but extends to all who need her guidance and care, her courage and strength, her wisdom and intercession. Just as Mary pondered in her heart the mysteries unfolding before her, so must we reflect on these mysteries. Christ s saving acts can be understood only through a lifetime of living. Like Mary, we must be open to all of God s overtures to us. We must respond with our yes we must take each event no matter how difficult or how wonderful as revealing God s plan for us. Mary is our Mother and model. She shows us how to open ourselves to God s Presence, power, and possibilities. As we begin the new year I can t help but look back on 2016 and count the many blessings that you have showered on, not only this faith community, but also the greater community. You have responded with countless loving Yeses to the many needs of God s people. On behalf of the staff, I thank you for being Jesus presence among us and pray that you have a blessed New Year! Happy New Year- Buon Anno! Feliz Ano Nuevo! Maligayang Bagong Taon! Chuc mung nam moi! Peace and love, Deacon John Mission Statement Gifted by God, called by Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a parish committed to serving the academic community and all those who choose to be part of our parish family.

This parish Mass will resume on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. National Migration Week 2017 National Migration Week 2017 will take place January 8-14. This year s theme is Creating a Culture of Encounter. The celebration provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the contributions of migrants, including refugees, and victims of human trafficking in our communities. With over 65 million people forcibly displaced from their homes globally, the world is increasingly affected by migration. National Migration Week offers a time to educate Catholic communities about migration and to come together to encounter immigrants and refugees in parishes, dioceses, and communities. National Migration Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight Biblical tradition and our mission to welcome the newcomer, said Bishop Joe Vasquez of Austin, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Migration. While the observance is only a week long, it is a vital time to show welcome, compassion, and solidarity with our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters. Merciful and Loving Father, We beseech you, open our hearts So that we may provide hospitality and refuge to migrants who are lonely, afraid, and far from their homes. Give us the courage to welcome every stranger As Christ in our midst, To invite them into our communities, As a demonstration of Christ s love for us. We pray that when we encounter the other, We see in her the face of your Son, When we meet a stranger, That we take his hand in welcome. Help us to live in solidarity with one another, To seek justice for those who are persecuted And comfort for those who are suffering. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.
