My Dear Friends, With the beginning of Lent, we are offered by Holy Mother Church a season of repentance, fasting and almsgiving. It is a time for us to truly take stock in our lives and see where we have failed and where we can improve. It is a time to turn away from sin. Besides the Ten Commandments, we also have the seven deadly sins. These are lust, gluttony, pride, envy, sloth, wrath and greed. There are also sins of omission; that is, sins that are committed because we fail to do something. St. James tells us in his letter in the New Testament that one sin that is very pervasive is the sins of the tongue. Gossip, calumny, detraction, and defamation are we criticize a person or gossip about a person to someone else. Yet, we are all called to be members of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic faith. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. We are to look out for each other, to lift each other up, to support one another in all our endeavors and to rejoice with one another. It is all about building up the Kingdom of God. It is all about being missionary disciples. It is about spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. No one is perfect. And everyone has a distinct personality. This isn t about a family, where you have anywhere from a few people to upwards of twenty people all with different personalities. This is a church that counts over one billion members. It is a parish in Torrington that counts all Catholics in Torrington whether they attend Mass or not. It is no wonder that there will be some people who rub others the wrong way, but that is true of all people because of our fallen humanity. But a Catholic is called to rise above that fallen humanity and to show love and respect for all people and to offer mercy and forgiveness when we are offended and to ask for mercy and forgiveness when we offend. This Lent, let us look at our hearts and see where we can ask the Holy Spirit to come and heal us of any ill feelings towards our brothers and sisters in Christ. God bless. Fr. John Mondays: Tuesdays: Wednesdays: Thursdays: Fridays: Pray for priests. You are invited to join Fr. Comunidad Hispana EUCARISTIA DOMINICAL SERVICIOS: POSIBILIDAD DE CONFESIONES, The Gospel of Matthew opens with a long genealogy of Jesus that we stumble over once a year at the Christmas Vigil Mass. This genealogy serves as the link between the Hebrew Scriptures and the legitimation of Jesus the Messiah. There is perhaps no better time to enter into this genealogy than during the Lenten season, as we reflect upon the cycle of Jesus life, death and resurrection. Session 1 (12:30-2:15) will explore the background to Matthew s Gospel and examine Matthew s genealogy, focusing in particular on the theological value of four women included in the line of Jesus. Session 2 (2:45-4:30) will engage deeply with the story of one of these women, Ruth, as told in the story that bears her name.
