Knights of Columbus Arkansas State Council August 2012 STATE DEPUTY REPORT MICHAEL KIEFFER Thank you to everyone who supported me in getting elected to State Deputy. Supreme has kept me out of trouble since the day after the election, flooding my mail boxes, both electronic and paper with paperwork. Thanks too to the District Deputies and Program Directors/Chairs who attended the Organizational Meeting. We had a great kick off to our programs this year. Finally thanks needs to go to Council 11604, Jacksonville who hosted the Organizational Meeting. We really enjoyed their hospitality. This year supreme is pushing a program they call a Power of One. One new Knight in each council, throughout the world can make a world of difference in the amount of charity activities we can do. Along with that they have adopted the slogan: One Knight per council per month. If we follow through on that idea most councils would make their membership goal, the state would make its membership goal and we would infuse our programs with a lot of new blood. I know what you are thinking. I can t get any new members - I have everybody in town. Do you? I have not seen any 18 year olds signed up recently. I have only seen a couple RCIA men signed up since Easter. Look around you; look at the men sitting with you at Mass. Look at the fathers, sons, uncles and cousins of the men in your council. Those are the men you want to be Knights, those are the men who need to be Knights. Then you will hear prospects say to you I am too busy, I have too many other things going on. Your answer should be well could you be a knight and do the other things. In fact wouldn t you be a better coach as a Knight, scout leader as a Knight, farmer as a Knight, salesman as a Knight, father and husband as a Knight. BEING A KNIGHT MAKES YOU A BETTER CATHOLIC AND A BETTER PERSON! I am pleased to announce that Arkansas State Council (that s you and I) have fully funded the Knights of Columbus Chapel at the Formation House. Every seminarian for our life time will be exposed to the Knights of Columbus Chapel at the Formation House and have a positive image of the Knights of Columbus. We did this without touching any budgeted funds for last year, this year or any moneys set aside for our programs, i.e. March for Life, Special Olympics, Baby Bottles, Squires, etc. Thank you for your generous support. Arkansas Knights have placed three ultra sound machines in Arkansas so far. But we have one firm location and two tentative locations for others. We don t have enough money to place three machines. We have baby bottles and need to run our fund raising efforts again. They have seen quite a number of saves because of the Little Rock ultra sound machines. Michael Kieffer State Deputy Vita Jesus New website you should have the Newsletter by the first of every month on the website. We are loading more things on the website every day. Get the word out arkofc.org.

August 12th is Fr. McGivney s 160th Birthday. Celebrate! Get a birthday cake and celebrate his birthday after Mass on the 12th! Supreme wants you to have two Corporate Communions before the end of the calendar year. A 2nd and 3rd Degree schedule to be out soon. STATE CHAPLAIN FR. BILL ELSER The days are winding down until the 130th annual Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus in Anaheim California. I joyfully anticipate my experience there as a brother Knight and State Chaplain of Arkansas since I have been blessed to attend to other Supreme Conventions in Phoenix Arizona and Washington D.C. I can tell you that it has always strengthened my identity as a member of the Knights of Columbus and opened my eyes to the scope and depth of our membership in this and in some other countries throughout the world. The Masses with brother knights and their wives, many priests and also many bishops is truly uplifting. While there are meetings for the chaplain and delegates to attend, there are many fun and social activities going on before and during the Convention for ANY Knight to participate in. If you are looking for a vacation destination in the future, consider coming to the Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus. Next year's convention will be held in San Antonio. I hope to be there and I hope to see more Arkansas Knights there as well. VOCATIONS DIRECTOR PETER MCNULTY Worthy Grand Knights, Faithful Navigators, District Deputies, and Brother Knights ALL, Since the report at the Convention, our seminarian numbers have changed! It was reported that we had 39 seminarians. We now have 30. Four have been Ordained a great blessing for our Diocese, and 5 have left the seminarian program. Msgr. Friend has informed me that there will be approximately 9 new candidates at the start of the new semester. I will, as soon as the vocation office has completed the assignments for ALL of our seminarians, (there could be some reassigned locations), I will answer a couple of Councils and Assemblies already waiting for someone to sponsor and will be calling on other Councils and Assemblies to consider sponsoring some candidate. We also have the good news of the Ordination to Deacon of Juan Guido and Robert Cigainero, Both are scheduled to be Ordained in 2014. Rick Hobbs is also scheduled for Ordination in 2014. Remember there are no Ordinations scheduled in 2013. Looking down the road, as I have stated, 3 are scheduled in 2014 and 4 are scheduled in 2015. We are blessed with multi ordinations for the years following through 2019. As you can see, these young men have a long road to travel and our prayers are needed to hopefully help level out the bumps! Page 2

The State Newsletter is a very important vehicle of communication; please use it to follow the updating of the Seminarian Program. Our state has, in the past year, due to the generosity of our councils and assemblies, provided 67 RSVP awards, with prayer and Charity, we can increase this number. As we start this new Fraternal Year, I ask each Council and Assembly to review their abilities to become part of the RSVP. The RSVP program is not just monetary awards, but also the prayers by Knights and their families. God bless us all! VIVAT JESU Peter McNulty FALL RETREAT ROY ANDERLE STATE CHURCH DIRECTOR The upcoming Fall Retreat at Subiaco is scheduled for September 7th thru 9th. The Retreat director is Fr. Bill Elser. For more information on the retreat or to sign up, contact Roy Anderle. God Bless Roy Anderle State Church Director E-mail: rcanderle@localnet.com Home: 479-394-4519 Cell: 479-243-3643 MEMBERSHIP REPORT MICHAEL (MIKE) WILLS M/C/M M/C/M is the new slogan of the Knights of Columbus. ONE MEMBER per COUNCIL per Month. CONGRATULATIONS: MSGR Charles F. Kordsmeier Council 5209 for the first 3 new members of this year. Brother Knights we have been charged with recruiting new members regularly so that we may give all Catholic Men the opportunity to be part of the Knights of Columbus. Let us not keep those from joining our Brotherhood by not asking them to part of our organization. Ask this Question of yourself. What would I be if I weren t a Knight? We might be our normal self s, we might be better off or worse. But one thing you can say about being a Knight is that you are the Four Corner Stone s of the Knights of Columbus. You are Charitable (Giving), you came to Unite (to be One), you are part of a Fraternity (Brothers), and you are Patriotic (Belief in Country). We have begun a new year and by this time you have evaluated your yearly calendar to accomplish your membership goal: Page 3

Here are some ideas for the coming months that might help your recruiting: Continuous: August: September: October: Challenge all Officers to recruit one new member Have a Birthday Celebration for Fr. McGivney s 160th Birthday on the 12th and invite a friend and prospect. First Degree Ceremonial in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary s Birthday 8th and 9th. Prepare for the Order Church Drive in October. Order your recruiting publications early. 20th and 21st Conduct your Church Drive at all Masses. Invite a prospect or friend to help with your charitable event. Fraternal Benefits Night is an insurance promotion presentation, invite prospects and families to attend and learn about the variety of benefits offered. Michael (Mike) Wills State Membership Director E-mail: michaelwills@suddenlink.net Worthy State Deputy and Brother Knights, STATE ADVOCATE REPORT FRANCISCO OLGUIN STATE ADVOCATE As State Advocate, I stand firm on being there for everyone in need of my services. All legal questions concerning the operations of the state & local councils can be addressed to me. I promise to get back with you with any concerns you may have as quickly as possible to settle any conflicts which may occur. I will make myself available for Council Leadership Training as designated by our State Deputy. I will assure that all District Deputies get the support they need in filing all their reports on time. I will promote UNITY by attending degree exemplifications, new council developments, assembly functions and any other duties assigned to me by our State Deputy.
