As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. A Staffed Nursery is available for your use at any time during the service. It is located in Rooms 1 and 2. A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is located near the balcony stairs at the back of the sanctuary. A speaker and window let you see and hear the service. Children s Activity Sheets give activities and lessons pertaining to the Scripture lessons for the day. Ask an usher at the door into the sanctuary. Restrooms are located in the hallway directly opposite the entrance to the sanctuary. Hearing assistance devices are available. Speak to an usher. Large print service folders are available. Speak to an usher. The word hosanna is a Hebrew word that means Lord, save us! The crowds cried, Hosanna! at Jesus entrance into Jerusalem, and it is still the cry of Christians today. The Lord has saved us! Hosanna! 2

Guest Preacher, Rev. Professor James P. Tiefel Dean of Chapel at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary 3

CALL TO WORSHIP Ringing of the Bell At the pastor s invitation, please stand and face the processional group in the back of the church. As the cross is carried through the assembly, turn and face the front. INVOCATION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. L: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the empty tomb and follow him with lively faith. C: Amen. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! L: Let us pray. L: God our Father, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem and was welcomed as a king by those who shouted Hosanna and spread their clothing and palm branches in his path. Accept our praise, and listen to our prayers we rejoice in our triumphant King, Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. L: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! C: Hosanna in the highest! 4

PROCESSIONAL HYMN: #131, All Glory, Laud, and Honor (vv.1-3) C: All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. You are the King of Israel and David's royal Son, Now in the Lord's name coming, Our King and blessed One. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The company of angels is praising you on high, And we with all creation in chorus make reply. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The people of the Hebrews with palms before you went; Our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. CONFESSION OF SINS L: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and Merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. L: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 5

KYRIE 1 Sung by the choir by Franz Peter Schubert Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. The leader says the Prayer of the Day. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE CHILDREN S SERMON THE FIRST LESSON: ZECHARIAH 9:9,10 9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. 1 The Kyrie is part of the historic worship of the church. Century after century, the cry of God s people is, Lord, have mercy! Here Schubert places these faithful words in a moving setting that demonstrates both the longing and confidence of a sinner praying for God s forgiveness. 6

HOSANNA The children sing the verses and the congregation sings the refrain. Refrain Hosanna, hallelujah! Sing we loud and clear. Hosanna, hallelujah! Jesus Christ is near. With ancient psalms and new grown palms Praise Him on His way. Hosanna, hallelujah! Christ, our Lord, is here. This day in spring the streets will ring with voices sweet and lyrical To greet our Lord, the One adored, His very life a miracle. Refrain King David s Son now rides upon a mule, of beasts the lowliest; Amidst the throng it bears along of all mankind the holiest. Refrain How very odd the Son of God must do things that would weary us. God will amaze; He works in ways that we all find mysterious. Refrain THE SECOND LESSON: PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 7

THE VERSE OF THE DAY Cantor: Refrain All: Refrain Cantor: Christ became obedient for us even to death on the cross. But God raised him on high, and gave him a name above all names. All: Refrain THE GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 19:28-40 28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.' " 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" 8

34 They replied, "The Lord needs it." 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" 40 "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." THE HYMN OF THE DAY: #133, Ride On, Ride On in Majesty THE SERMON So what do you think about the Nazarene? 9

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10

THANKSGIVING THE OFFERING The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. THE OFFERTORY All the Earth Sing Forth, by J.S. Bach. Sung by the Junior Choir. THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 11

THE SACRAMENT Faith Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members partake of the Sacrament. L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. L: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He made his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever. 12

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION: L: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. C: Amen. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI 2 Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us and grant us peace. THE DISTRIBUTION: THE SONG OF DEPARTURE: #334, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow THE LORD S BLESSING L: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. C: Amen. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. 2 The Latin title for this song simply means Lamb of God. Believers approach the altar of God by the sacrificial substitute who died in our place. We join with the cry of John the Baptizer (John 1:29) to the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world and grants us mercy and peace. The Christian church has sung this text before communion for more than 13 centuries. 13
