Gathering around God s Word FREEDOM SUNDAY PRELUDE GREETINGS and ANNOUNCEMENTS Please sign and pass the fellowship pad to the inside aisle. RESPONSIVE CALL to WORSHIP Leader: I wait for the Lord All: My soul waits, and in God s word I hope. Leader: My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, All: more than those who watch for the morning. Leader: In faith, let us turn to our God, whose love is sure. UNISON OPENING PRAYER All: Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you show us the breadth of your power and the depth of your love. You listen to our cries of pain and hear our laments. You see the fear in our eyes and know the secrets of our hearts. You do not turn from our distress, but stretch out your hand to heal, to comfort, and to save. All thanks and praise be to you, O God; your steadfast love endures forever. Amen. OPENING HYMN of PRAISE Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above, GtG 645 (PH 483) CONFESSION and time of self-examination Leader: Because of such great mercy, God is ready to forgive all the ways we fail to live in faithfulness. Relying on that mercy, let us confess our sin before God and one another. All: Trusting you does not always come easy when each day we are faced with the ugliness of the world. We do not believe that love conquers fear. We are not convinced that power comes through weakness. We cannot conceive how you could heal us. Forgive our lack of faith, O God, and renew our trust in you, for we would be disciples of Jesus, in whose name we pray. SILENT PRAYER of CONFESSION SUNG RESPONSE Lord Have Mercy, GtG 551 RESPONSIVE DECLARATION OF PARDON Leader: If the Lord kept count of all our sins, who could stand? 2

But with God there is forgiveness; Christ gives us peace. All: Thanks be to God. Amen. GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, GtG 581 (PH 579) PASSING the PEACE of CHRIST May the Peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! MORNING MESSAGE Rev. Erica L. Harley Responding to God s Word AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Apostle s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; 3

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and life everlasting. Amen. SONG of AFFIRMATION My Faith Looks Up to Thee, GtG 829 INVITATION to the OFFERING Leader: You know the generous acts of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty we might become rich. Sisters and brothers, let us give generously of our good and our lives in imitation of our Lord and Savior. OFFERTORY PRESENTATION DOXOLOGY Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow GtG 606 (PH 592) UNISON PRAYER of DEDICATION All: Most holy God, who hears our prayers and answers them and gives us more than we can ask or imagine, accept these offerings and use them to your glory, that even now we might imitate your coming reign of justice, peace and love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. The SACRAMENT of HOLY COMMUNION Invitation to the Lord s Table Leader: This is the joyful feast of the people of God! People will come from north and south and from east and west to sit at table in the kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. This is the Lord s Table. Our Savior invites those who trust him to share the feast that he has prepared. Great Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. 4

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: Praise to you, O God, for all your works. You created the world and called it good and made us in your image to live together in love. You made a covenant with us, and even when we turned from you, you remained ever faithful. Therefore, with all creation we sing your praise: ALL: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. GtG 552 Leader: Thank you, O God, for sending us your Son. He lived among us and told your story. He healed the sick and welcomed sinners. He shared our pain and died our death, then rose to new life that we might live, and all creation be restored. Words of Institution Leader: We give you thanks that the Lord Jesus on the night before he died, took bread, and after giving thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way Jesus took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, shed for you and for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Remembering your boundless love revealed to us in Jesus Christ, we break bread and share the cup, giving ourselves to you to live for him in joy and praise. Leader: Great is the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again., GTG 553 Leader: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine that they may be for us the body and blood of Christ and that we may be his body for the world. By your Spirit unite us with Christ and one another until we feast with him and with all your saints in your eternal realm of justice and peace. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. All: Amen. Amen. Amen., GtG 554 The Lord's Prayer, CH 631 Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven! Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen! 5

Breaking of the Bread and Pouring of Cup Leader: Jesus said: I am the bread of life. Jesus said: I am the vine, you are the branches. Come to me and never be hungry; believe in me and never thirst. The gifts of God for the people of God. All: Thanks be to God. Communion of the People Gluten-free elements are available upon request. Prayer after Communion Leader: God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord All: Amen.
