In the birth of John and in the birth of Jesus the Messiah, we see the grace of God breaking forth into a world broken by sin and without hope. John s miraculous birth shows the mercy and favor of God in preparing his people for the coming of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. John the Baptist's life was fueled by one burning passion, to point others to Jesus Christ and to the coming of God's kingdom. The fire of the Spirit dwelt in John and made him the forerunner of the coming Messiah. John was led by the Spirit into the wilderness prior to his ministry where he was tested and grew in the word of God. John broke the prophetic silence of the previous centuries when he began to speak the word of God to the people of Israel. His message was similar to the message of the Old Testament prophets who chided the people of God for their unfaithfulness and who tried to awaken true repentance in them. Among a people unconcerned with the things of God, it was his work to awaken their interest, unsettle them from their complacency, and arouse in them enough good will, to recognize and receive Christ when he came. Holy Cross Scholarship Winners Please join us in congratulating our Holy Cross Scholarship winners: Olivia Caruso, Alexandra Hickey, Michael Lemoine, Jack Velcamp, PJ Velcamp and Emily Worobel. These parishioners from the class of 2018 have been awarded scholarships based on their service to the parish and a written essay. The Scholarship Committee was very impressed with the students commitment to the parish and the quality of their written submissions. The many hours given in service to Religious Education was especially noteworthy. Please pray for these students and all college-bound students; that they may prosper, not only in their studies, but also in their relationship with the Lord.

June 24, 2018 Page 2 #623 Charismatic Healing Mass The Healing Shepherd Prayer Group invites everyone to attend a Charismatic Healing Mass on Monday, June 25th, at 8:00 PM in Holy Cross Church. Our Celebrant will be Fr. Pio Mandato. All are welcome to attend! Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament We have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament every Wednesday from 9:30 AM until Noon during the summer. We also have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00 PM. Men s Group Summer Session Join us on June 28th at 7:30 PM, our topic will be; Turning Point Eight Encounters with Jesus That W ill Change Y our Life Session III: The Wedding Party Encounters Jesus How well do you know Jesus? Do you want to get to know him better? Have you really encountered him? Have you been waiting a long time to do so? John s Gospel was written to help you experience Jesus Christ. In Turning Point, we will focus on eight people who encounter Jesus in John s Gospel so that we can personally meet Jesus ourselves and develop a more significant relationship with him in our everyday life. In chapter two of his Gospel, John tells the story of the wedding at Cana, Jesus first miracle, and the only Gospel to do so. His first sign. The first miracle is a story of abundance. After all, as Jesus will tell us later in (John 10:10), He has come that we might have a life and have it abundantly. The wedding at Cana illustrates Jesus desire and capacity to do just that: turn our shortages into His abundance. New members are welcome! Religious Freedom Week People of faith are committed to serving others in God s love in healthcare, child welfare, migration and refugee resettlement, education, and more. Religious freedom protects the space in which we can continue to serve. Religious Freedom Week began on June 22nd, the Feast of Saint Thomas More & Saint John Fisher. For the past 11 years, Holy Cross Church has been served by its own, thriving Elizabeth Ministry chapter. At Holy Cross, Elizabeth Ministers visit new moms to offer support, cook meals for families with new babies, maintain a prayer chain, and facilitate a play-group that meets twice a month. We also host a variety of social and spiritual events throughout the year with topics that range from cake decorating, nutritional information sessions, all-day retreats and Christmas brunch. All are welcome to attend these events. Elizabeth Ministry at Holy Cross was blessed to have had Mairead Clifford as our Coordinator for the past four years. Mairead s leadership and guidance is very much appreciated. Thank you, Mairead, for a job well done. We will miss you! We are pleased to welcome Teresa Makin as the new Coordinator. The Core Team leaders are: Carol Gangi coordinates delivery of dinners cooked by volunteers to families with new babies; Katie Berarducci manages the hospitality needs for all E. M. events as well as coordinates volunteers to help out at Baptisms; Kate Caffrey manages the parish-wide prayer chain as well as all communication within E. M. and its members; Adriana Werth coordinates a playgroup for newborns through three years old & reaches out to all new moms in the parish to assess their needs and inform them of how Elizabeth Ministry is here to help; Christy Ramos coordinates a faith sharing group which meets twice a month in the St. Joseph Room of the church; Kathleen Smith coordinates the sending of baptism anniversary cards to all families one year after their child has been baptized. Many exciting events are being planned for the upcoming year. We are always looking for volunteers and as you can see, there are lots of way to get involved. To learn more information about Elizabeth Ministry, please email: elizabethministry@holycrossrumson.org.

June 24, 2018 Page 2 #623 Had you attempted to obtain a certificate at another parish? Answer Choices Responses Responses Yes 8.62% 5 No 91.38% 53 I had a hard time reaching the first parish. Answer Choices Responses Responses 6.67% 1 I was refused. 6.67% 1 Other (please specify) 86.67% 13 Answered 15 What suggestions do you have for the church to offer a more consistent process for obtaining a certificate from parish to parish in this area? Answered 51 As expected, most parishioners first contact the parish secretary. The Diocese of Trenton has sponsored several workshops and appreciation days for Parish Secretaries. These have helped impress on everyone who speaks with a parishioner the importance of being helpful and courteous. However, the luxury of having a full-time receptionist dedicated to answering the phone can no longer be afforded. Here at Holy Cross, our parish secretary not only answers the parish phone, but also serves as secretary to the School of Religion. Between vacations and days off, lunch breaks and other responsibilities, we depend some of the time on parish volunteers who may not be as knowledgeable about parish procedures and sometimes may simply take a message. More frequently than I would like, the phone is in message taking mode. Other parish staff fill in answering the phone when available. If there is anticipated difficulty, the caller is always referred to a Pastoral Assistant. We frequently adjust the staffing pattern to answer the phones as best we can.
