There, he was horrified both by slavery as an institution and by the inhuman brutality inflicted upon the slaves. He solemnly vowed to become the slave of the slaves, and lived that vow heroically for close to forty years. Not knowing their language, Peter began his ministry among the slaves by using the universal language of practical charity, providing medical care and a tangible though wordless assertion of their human dignity: We spoke to them not with words but with our hands, kneeling beside them, bathing their faces and bodies, encouraging them with friendly gestures (see Liturgy of the Hours, Volume 4, p. 2018). Then came evangelization and baptism. Holiness as human wholeness: Peter Claver s enduring witness. In addition to his special work with African slaves, Claver also made regular visits to serve and teach the inmates of the leper colony at the San Lázaro Royal Hospital. As he consoled them, he reminded them, Make of life a ladder to heaven, leprosy of the body does not matter if the soul is clean. That is not all. He also worked closely with the Brothers of St. John of God at their hospital of San Sebastían. While at the their hospital, he would sweep rooms, make up the beds, and serve meals. Only then would he visit each patient, bringing spiritual consolation. Claver also ministered to prisoners several times a week. He was very conscientious to spiritually prepare those who were condemned to death. One witness noted, He was so devoted to this ministry that there was no one condemned by the courts in his day whom he did not assist. He also ensured that the poor were all given a proper burial. Over his career, Claver had survived five epidemics which devastated the population of Cartagena. Nevertheless, the fifth epidemic took its toll on him. His hands began to shake and he could no longer say Mass. On occasion, he did hear confessions, but he was generally inactive for the last four years of his life. He died in utter abandonment on September 8, 1654. Claver was beatified by Pope Pius IX on September 21, 1851; he was canonized by Leo XIII on January 15, 1888. Eight years later, the pope named Claver the Patron of all the Missions to the Negroes. His heroic love and self-sacrifice for the African slaves is unparalleled in the history of the Church. Among the greatest testimonials to Claver is the extraordinary comment of Leo XIII: No life, except the life of Christ, has so moved me as that of St. Peter Claver.

Page Three September 10, 2017 September 13th is the fifth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. October 13th marks the 100 years of the Great Miracle of the Sun. The Divine Mercy Ministry (led by our wonderful, dynamic servants of Mercy: Mary Monesi, Brian Carrigan and Prudiel Libatique) is organizing and will lead a Day of Adoration on October 13th as we ceaselessly and humbly pray for peace in the world, the conversion of poor sinners (including ourselves), and unity and faith in our nation. Everyday (especially on that day) we live out Our Lady s summons at Fatima: daily prayer (especially the Rosary), conversion and penance. I would also like to personally invite and highly encourage YOU, your family and friends to seize the grace and opportunity to register (either online or mail-in), attend, participate and be blessed in the upcoming Third Divine Mercy Congress in the Los Angeles Archdiocese a.k.a. RACOM3 or Third Regional Apostolic Congress on Mercy hosted by our parish. It is such a unique and rare occasion that the Marians of the Immaculate Conception (official and entrusted keepers and theologians of the Divine Mercy message) from the Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts visit our area. Fathers Seraphim Michalenko (vice-postulator of the canonization of St. Faustina and chief theologian of the Divine Mercy) and Chris Alar (current director of the Association of Marian Helpers) shall talk about the timely and urgent signs and messages of Our Lord of Mercy and Our Lady of Fatima. They are familiar faces we see at EWTN. I do believe that with the signs of the times unfolding before us, we need to remember, if not rediscover, the Time of Mercy and the Promise of Triumph and Peace given to us. The question is Do we care to know, understand, heed and act upon The Message? The Divine Mercy Ministry of our parish desires to continue and deepen its proclamation and sharing of Divine Mercy. We thank Our Lord and Our Lady for blessing us with our meaningful Divine Evenings. Now, we are all the more determined in leading our faithcommunity towards CONSECRATION that we exclusively belong to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary! Or better, WE BELONG TO THE ARMY OF MERCY AND PEACE! I would like to end and share with you the transcript of the September 13th Fatima message taken from www.ewtn.com/fatima. Despite the ridicule and jokes of the secular, atheistic press, more than 30,000 people gathered in the Cova for the September apparition. Whether drawn by devotion or curiosity, they prayed the rosary while awaiting the arrival of the visionaries and their vision. When at last the time came they could hear Lucia say, What do you want of me? Continue the Rosary, my children. Say it every day that the war may end. In October Our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Saint Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to wear the cords to bed. Keep them on during the day. I have the petitions of many for your help. Will you assist a little girl who is deaf and dumb? She will improve within the year. And the conversions that some have asked to have brought about? The cures of the sick ones? Some I will cure, and some I will not. In October I will perform a miracle so that all may believe. With these last words still ringing in their ears, the Lady rose and disappeared in the heavens, as Lucia called to the crowd, If you wish to see her --- Look! Look! JESUS I TRUST IN YOU. AVE MARIA! Page Six St. Peter Claver If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. ~ Matthew 18:19 Loving Father, we thank You as we celebrate the 45th Anniversary of St. Peter Claver Parish, and the journey that began so many years ago. Thank You for your blessing as we celebrate the joys, accomplishments and the happy times. We acknowledge our struggles and heartaches, but we have continued under Your Fatherly protection and love. We thank You for being with us always. We offer a prayer of thanks and ask Your blessing on all those who have worked, served, and have made St. Peter Claver their home. May this faith community continue to see the needs of those around us. Make our parish a blessing to Your people and continue to bless, protect and guide us as we go forward. Amen. Monsignor Bauler, Congratulations on this, the Jubilee Year of your priesthood! Thank you for your hard work, wisdom and guidance for the parishioners of Saint Peter Claver.
