~ REFLECTION ~ On is Second Sunday of Advent our focus begins to shift from e end of time to e time immediately before e first coming of Christ into e world. Yet e message is still e same: God s reign is at hand. As we worship togeer today, let us heed John e Baptist, whose message of preparing ose people of Israel so long ago echoes in our own hearts: Prepare e way of e Lord, make straight his pas. DID YOU KNOW? No matter how you handle Christmas gifts, you re likely to have to go to e mall wi your kids during e holiday season. In e midst of e crowds, children can easily become separated from eir parents. Be alert in crowds and maintain awareness of what oers around you are doing. Institute e buddy system have your kids hold your hand or one anoer s. Talk wi your children about what to do, and who to go to for help, should you become separated. Also, it is important to give your child your cell phone number so mall security can contact you quickly if needed. For more information, visit http://safety.more4kids.info/186/ shopping-wi-kids/ SABIA USTED? Para más información, por TEN REASONS FOR GOING TO MASS Not so long ago Caolics felt ey had to have a 106 o fever and a fractured pelvis to be excused from Sunday Mass. Now, some Caolics (especially young ones, but many older ones too) miss a succession of Sundays for much lighter reasons and still consider emselves active members of e Church. 9. WHY GO TO MASS? BECAUSE I NEED ROOTS & FUTURE There are no "ghosts of Christmas past" in my parish church, but as I walk rough it, empty, wi e sun lighting ose old German stainedglass windows, I know at my moer and faer looked at em, and my grandmoer and grandfaer. I see e pew at my grandfaer always managed to rent not too far up, not too far back. There's where we knelt as children, for "First Communion". There's where good old Gertrude Reilly knelt for 60 years and prayed up a storm. There's e altar, where I hammered e chimes at e precise moment e priest began to lift e host. I'm lucky. I had a solid beginning. The church (building, people, spaghetti dinners, bells) - as well as e Church (still unsuspected, but implicit: e whole Body of Christ) was e Rock at e center of life. It was an extension of home. Here was absolute certainty and security, not yet challenged and still e Rock when doubts and darkness did reaten. Though religious practices may change (as ey did at Vatican II), here is where hundreds, ousands, will come after me, after I walk on to join Moer and Dad and e rest ousands who will hear e same words of Jesus, eat e same body and blood, under e appearance of e same bread and wine be e same Body of Jesus, but in a future period of time. I am no rootless wanderer. I belong to e past and future, centered around a cross and a sun-filled morning. 4 St. Brigid Caolic Church
