For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17 4th Sunday of Lent

My Dear Friends, It is that time of year again when the Archdiocese honors those volunteers recommended by the pastor for the annual St. Joseph medal. St. Joseph is the patron saint of our Archdiocese. He is also an important figure in the Gospels, even though he does not have a spoken word attributed to him. He is traditionally a quiet and unassuming man who went about his business and was a support for his wife, our Blessed Mother, and for her Son, Jesus Christ. He took no credit for the good works that he quietly performed. Every year, our archbishop asks us to nominate a person (or a married couple) who exemplifies this unassuming model of discipleship. Throughout the years, many deserving men and women in Torrington have been nominated by previous pastors as well as by me to be the recipient of this prestigious honor. In 2015, I had decided to nominate only one person from the Torrington Cluster in order to show that we were one church community. I did the same in 2016. Last year, I returned to a person or a couple from each individual parish in our cluster because of the imminent changes that were happening due to the pastoral plan. This year, now that we are one new parish, we are allowed to nominate only one person (or married couple) for the 2018 award. It brings me much joy to share with you that the first ever St. Joseph medal recipient for St. John Paul the Great parish is Maria Lovallo. The ceremony will take place next week, March 18th, at St. Joseph Cathedral at 3pm if anyone would like to attend and show Maria your support. Without wanting to embarrass Maria, I will not list everything she does for our parish, but suffice to say, she does a lot in a very quiet and unassuming manner. Congratulations Maria. It is a well-deserved honor for you and for our parish. God bless. Fr. John Defending Our Religious Liberty Recently, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has actively defended religious liberty in court. For example, the solicitor general supported Jack Phillips, the custom-cake baker, by arguing that freedom of expression for ourselves requires freedom of expression for others. Also, when the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rejected a bus advertisement from the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., because it was religious, DOJ attorneys filed a brief objecting to WMATA s religious discrimination. Legal motions like these are much-needed steps toward safeguarding religious liberty.
