St. Andrew s United Church Cochrane, Alberta Sunday Worship Palm/Passion Sunday March 29, 2015 The Gathering Please Stand As You Are Able Readers: Connal MacLeod, Jillian MacMillian, Diane Scott & Don Hepburn Welcome, Community Notices *Reading: Mark 11:1-11 11When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? just say this, The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately. 4 They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! -1-10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor

David! Hosanna in the highest heaven! 11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. Procession and Hymn for Palm Sunday: (Children come in to loud Hosannas and go to their spot.) Call To Worship: Responsive Reading of Psalm 118 (VU837) Part Three (19-24) Open to me the gates of the temple, that I may enter and give thanks to God. This is the gate of God; through it the righteous shall enter. I thank you for you have answered me; you have become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is God's doing, marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! R Part Four (25-29) Save us, O God, we pray; God, we pray, give us success. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of God. -2- We bless you from the house of God. God, our God, has given us light; with palm branches in hand let us march to the altar.

You are my God, and I will thank you; you are my God, and I will extol you. R Hymn: He Came Riding On a Donkey VU124 Congregational Story Time: Based on Mark 14:1-9 Communion Hymn: Long Ago and Far Away MV195 The plot against Jesus SERVICE OF THE TABLE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER FOR LENT Two: After they came into Jerusalem, Jesus gathered his disciples together, and they shared a meal. It was a special meal, because it was at the time of the festival of Passover. Three: As they gathered, it did not appear to be any different from any other Passover meal, but it was different. Jesus said and did things differently; he brought his friends together and shared a special time with them and with God. All: The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; for they said, Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people." Judas agrees to betray Jesus Two: Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. -3- When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. One: The disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, he came with the twelve.

All: And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." Three: They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, "Surely, not I?" He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. The Lord's Supper One: Holy God, we praise you. Let the heavens be joyful, and the earth be glad. Two: We bless you for crafting the whole world, for your promises to your people Israel, and for Jesus Christ in whom your fullness dwells. One: Born of Mary, he shares our life. Eating with sinners, he welcomes us. Guiding our children, he leads us. Three: Visiting the sick, he heals us. Dying on the cross, he saves us. Raised from the dead, he gives new life. Living with you, he prays for us. One: While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. -4- With thanksgiving we take this bread and this cup and proclaim Jesus death and resurrection. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us that this meal may be our communion in the body of Christ. Two: Make us one with Christ and with all who share this feast. Unite us in faith as we pray the Lord s prayer Our Father... Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those Who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen. Three: Encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, that we might serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory. One: We praise you, eternal God, through Christ your Word made flesh, and in the power of your life-giving Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Sharing of the bread and wine: The body of Christ The blood of Christ -5- All: O Jesus, We have held your body in our hands. We have touched your grace and felt you love. May we carry that love in all we say in all we do in all we are. Amen Scripture: Mark 14:26-15:15 Anthem: Thy Will Be Done Trudy Ross, soloist Reflection: Willing To Bear the Cost Of Being Wrong

Quote: Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more. Erica Jong, Fear of Flying Invitation To Offering: Gathering the gifts: Hymn: Tree of Life VU121 Prayer of Dedication: As we begin our journey with Jesus to the cross, we dedicate our offering, confident, O God, that you have a purpose for us and for our gifts. Use them and use us to proclaim hope to the world. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Reading: Mark 15:16-20 -6- Benediction and Blessing: Dismissal: The Great Amen MV205 Amen, amen, O Holy One!
