A LIVING ADVENT Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has dedicated the coming twelve months as a Year of Consecrated Life. The entire Church is invited to support the lives of men and women who follow the Lord Jesus and consecrate their lives to Him through vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. During this time, we are asked to pray for an increase in vocations and that young people will have the courage to follow Jesus by becoming religious sisters, brothers or priests. Recently, I read a homily by a bishop in Holland who noted that people in a religious vocation are always living in a time of Advent. Through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, these disciples of Jesus are always alert and searching for His arrival and presence in our world. I think that bishop's insight is a good one, and would emphasize that religious themselves are signs to us of Christ's presence here in our world today. During this year, St. Mary's will offer several opportunities to support men and women in the consecrated life. Please watch the bulletin and website for more details beginning in January. Thank you. WHERE DID THAT PAINTING COME FROM? People keep asking me about the large painting located on the east side of the church. The painting is a 200 year old Italian copy of Madonna della Seggiola (Mother of the Chair). The original was painted by Raphael in 1513-14 and is displayed in the Pitti Palace in Florence. A family in our community was moving out of their home and donated the painting with the large frame to St. Mary. Many folks have commented how much they like the warmth of the painting. If you have not seen it, I invite you to look and please say a prayer for our parish. WE RE OPEN ON CHRISTMAS The schedule is included in this bulletin. We have twelve Masses from 4:00pm Christmas Eve to Christmas Day at 1:30pm. I hope this provides everyone a convenient opportunity to celebrate Christmas. If you have any questions about Christmas donations, please contact Rebecca Quackenbush at 847.234.0205. CHRISTMAS SEATING Please remember that this year on Christmas Eve there will be three Masses at 4:00pm: one in our church, one in the Upper Grade gym and one at Lake Forest High School Auditorium. The Mass in church at 4:00pm is always very crowded and every year there is some tension around the saving of seats. Please be fair and courteous about seating. No seat in the church can be saved beyond 3:45pm, at which point I am instructing the ushers to seat those who are standing in an empty space reserved or not. Please note we often start Mass in the church a few minutes early, because by 3:50pm there is no more room. Thank you for your cooperation. CHRISTMAS PARKING On Christmas Eve we will provide a parking service to assist with parking in the Green Bay and Oakwood lots for the 4:00pm and 6:00pm Masses. We will also supply a shuttle service from the city lot on Oakwood to the church from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. A Blessed Christmas! Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern@archchicago.org Pastor s Notes
