2 Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014 From the Administrator, Fr. James Merold My Dear People, Rejoice always, Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances, give thanks. (From today s second reading) These words from St. Paul s Letter to the Thessalonians complement our Advent theme: Receive the Gift, Reject the Glitter, Reflect the Glory. This middle Advent Sunday is called Gaudete Sunday Rejoicing Sunday. Rose colored vestments and altar hangings replace the dark colored hues of the season for just a day. So, let s rejoice and be glad. The psalmist says: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. We are having a great Advent here at St. Bede. I am continually being inspired by you as I move among you leading worship, preaching, participating in meetings and events. Pastoring a large, active parish requires much energy, but every moment is worth it for me. Thank you for your response to the Annual Fund Appeal for our school. Responses are still coming in each day. If you haven t contributed yet, please answer the Lord s call and do so soon. Remember, God loves a cheerful giver; He will not be outdone in generosity. This is more than just a pious platitude; it is the very promise of our loving God. He is also a very generous God and Father who always listens to us and forgives us. We will have an opportunity to experience this next weekend in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After every weekend Mass we will offer confessions. Please come and be prepared to confess your sins to one of the priests who will then grant you absolution in Jesus name. Also, this Wednesday, December 17 our school children will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation after they attend the 8:15 a.m. Mass. Last Wednesday, our Religious Education students went to confession as part of their class sessions. We are striving to instill a love and a longing for this sacrament as part of their Christian-Catholic formation. It is so important for parents to help and support their children by bringing them to confession on a regular basis. Confession is not only to be received in Advent and Lent, but to part of our lives all year round. I guess my question for all of you is: When was the last time you participated in this sacrament? What is keeping you from a more frequent reception of this sacrament of peace and forgiveness? Whatever it is come next weekend and let the Lord forgive and heal you. So, keep rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks during these days before Christmas. In Christ, the Lord of the Advent, Father Jim Merold

4 Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014 St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree is Almost Over! The St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree is coming to a close! There may be a few tags left along the windows of the church! This annual event offers our parish families opportunities to provide much-needed basic items to organizations serving needy individuals and families throughout our community. It is a wonderful occasion to remember that Christmas is a time of giving, as well as receiving! This year, we are collecting and donating items for the following organizations: Aid for Women of Northern Lake County Serves women in need who are facing unexpected pregnancy and their children under the age of 2 years. Home of the Sparrow serves the community as a transitional shelter program providing housing and supportive services for homeless women and their children in McHenry County and Northern Illinois. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Helping our own parish stocking their food pantry to aid our own community. All new, unwrapped gifts with the tag attached must be returned to school or the rectory office no later than Monday, December 15. If you have any questions regarding the Giving Tree, please contact Lauren Ziemba at 847-587-5541 or by using lauren.r.ziemba@gmail.com. This Weekend is our Annual Breakfast with Santa & Mrs. Claus Sunday, December 14th After all Masses in Coleman Hall Join the Knights of Columbus, Religious Education & Women s Club (they will be selling Cookies by the Pound ) as we greet Santa. Breakfast for the whole family! Come and join us!

St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 5 Christmas Planning I hope you are in the process of planning which of our five Christmas Masses you will participate in this year. Our Christmas Eve, 4:00 PM Mass is the largest congregation. There will be additional seating in both the choir loft and Coleman Hall. If you are looking for a less crowded Mass, perhaps the Christmas Eve, 6:00 PM Mass would be a good choice for you. Our Pastor Emeritus, Father Fitzpatrick will celebrate this Mass. The Christmas Mass of the Night will be at 10:30 PM on Christmas Eve. This Mass takes the place of the former Midnight Mass. This change was instituted by Pope Benedict a few years before he retired. He changed the Midnight Mass at St. Peter s Basilica to an earlier Mass in the evening. Pope Francis has continued this practice. On Christmas morning, we will celebrate the Lord s Nativity at 8:00 and 10:00 AM. There will be music at each of the five Masses. Invite family and neighbors to join with you to celebrate the Christmas Feast. Father Jim Merold Mass Attendance October 2014: Average Weekend Attendance - 723 November 2014: Average Weekend Attendance - 755 Let s see these numbers grow! Not for us, but for the Lord! Plan Now for the Holydays Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) Saturday, December 20 & Sunday, December 21 Confessions after the weekend Masses The Feast of the Lord s Nativity Wednesday, December 24 - Christmas Eve The Christ-Mass at: 4:00 p.m., (children-friendly) 6:00 p.m., 10:30 p.m. (preceded by Christmas Carols at 10:00 p.m.) (Please note: There will be no 8:15 a.m. Mass that day) Thursday, December 25 - Christmas Day Mass at 8:00 a.m. & 10:00 a.m. Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Wednesday, December 31 5:00 p.m. Mass of New Year (Please note: There will be no 8:15 a.m. Mass that day) Thursday, January 1 9:00 a.m. Mass of New Year (This Feast is a Holy Day of Obligation) Families and the Gospel Third Sunday of Advent Today s gospel reports there is one among you whom you do not recognize. It is hard to believe Christ is present in a family with crazy schedules, suppers that start too late and end too early, cars that don t start, misunderstandings, frustrations, piles of laundry, unmatched socks and stretched food budgets. This list is endless. The words spoken at Mass, The Lord is with you, are not a hope, they are a fact. by Bud Ozar

6 Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014 New Year s - Coming Soon As the 2014 Calendar Year is coming to a close, we are preparing for 2015. We are planning for this new year in a variety of ways. Our parish pastoral staff has been meeting and discerning how we might observe Lent and Easter in a way that will help all of us to draw nearer to Christ and His Church during this holy season. This may involve changing (or rearranging) some of the events that are already scheduled. I am asking all of us to be open to what our pastoral staff will decide in the weeks ahead. Any change will be communicated with the persons directly involved. One suggestion that came from both the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) and the Parish Pastoral Staff is to add a Mass to our Sunday schedule during Lent. We will initiate a Sunday evening Mass during Lent. The time will be at either 4:30 or 5:00 PM. We hope to involve many of our youth both grade school and high school in these Masses in all the various liturgical roles readers, ushers, servers, musicians, etc. If this Mass time is beneficial to many of our parishioners (and even people from outside the parish) we will continue it after Easter. We also hope to have some additional evening Masses during Lent on weeknights. We want to reach as many people as possible as well as increase the opportunities for worship during Holy Week. I personally am excited about what we are trying to accomplish. Because our children are so important to us we will soon begin to have Children s Liturgy of the Word at every 11:00 AM Sunday Mass beginning in February. I am so pleased to see so many of our young people participate in this liturgy. We are even preparing a special Children s Chapel where this will take place. Deacon Larry and I are working on this at the present time. Aren t you glad that you are a part of St. Bede; I know I am! Fr. I haven t been away in 8 years, so, hopefully, this vacation should help me recuperate. I m not sure how long I ll be away, but I do know I ll miss not seeing all of you each day. The happiest years of my life have been here with you at St. Bede, so I ll miss all of you very much while I m gone. Hopefully, the warm weather and the change in routine will help me recuperate more quickly. I want to thank you all for your friendship and your many, many kindnesses to me. You and your family will be in my daily prayers. God bless you, Fr. Fitz Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles that one has overcome while trying to succeed. Booker T. Washington

10 Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014 Christmas Remembrance The Advent season is filled with hopeful anticipation looking forward to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate, flowers and festive decorations become an important part of our homes, as well as our church environment. It is also a time when we most miss family and friends who have gone before us here on earth. In their lifetime, they gave us a gift of themselves and now, we can remember them by making a donation for flowers in their name as they continue to remain alive in us, especially during this Christmas season. The names of those you wish to be remembered will be published in the January 11th bulletin. To participate, please fill out the form below and return it with your donation, per memorial, by Monday, December 29th. Donations may be deposited in the Sunday collection (please place in an envelope marked "Christmas Remembrance"), or the envelope may be dropped off at the rectory during office hours. Please make checks payable to St. Bede Church. Thank you. Christmas Remembrance (please print) In Memory of Donated by St. Bede Cancer Support Group (and any other illnesses people need support with) This support group consists of prayer, sharing and listening. There may occasionally be speakers on cancer issues. This ministry is on-going and is held on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in our Faith Formation Center Library. If you would like to attend, please call the Parish office at 847-587-2251 or feel free to just stop by and see what it s all about. The next meeting will be on Thursday, December 18th. Christmas Wafers Oplatki Available The Christmas Wafer, called Oplatki in Polish and Oblatek in other Slavic languages is a custom that comes to us from the Old Country. The custom of the wafer goes back many centuries. In olden times, and still today among those who maintain family traditions from the Old Country, a special meal would be eaten at sundown on Christmas Eve. A wafer is placed at each setting. At the beginning of the meal, each person would ask the others at the table to forgive him or her for the many offenses committed against them. As a token of the forgiveness, the person would take a piece of the petitioner s wafer. After all had made their peace with on another, the pieces of wafer are eaten. The Christmas wafers are available at the back of church. There are 3 wafers per packet (two white and one pink). A donation to help defray the cost is very much appreciated. You may place your donation in the envelope provided and place it in the collection basket. Thank you. May the peace of Christmas come to all who read this so that Christ may truly find a home in their hearts!
