From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Christian Teachability Much is often made of the fact that Jesus was willing to sit and talk with the Samaritan woman at the well, which is the gospel scene we hear about in this weekend s readings. And rightly so. Samaritans and Jews were enemies of each other. The woman was also living in an immoral marital situation. That is why she is drawing water out of the well during the hottest part of the day she has been shunned by her village. The Lord, however, reaches out to her. It is a clear example of His mercy. But let s not lose sight of the woman. Although she has gotten herself into an unfortunate situation, she is open to being taught by the Lord. She is teach-able. Teachability isn t a word, I realize. Or at least it isn t a commonly accepted one, yet. I could call it student-ability too, I suppose. By teachability, I mean a student s willingness to listen to, understand, and apply what is being taught. For teaching to happen, there has to be both a teacher and a student. It isn t enough to have an excellent teacher, if there isn t anyone willing to listen to the teacher and learn. The woman at the well listens to the Lord, and amazing things start happening. First, she becomes a follower of Jesus Herself. Second, the gospel indicates that her whole village became disciples. And the fact that the villagers were willing to listen to the woman who had previously been shunned shows that they are being reconciled to each other as well. Christians are students of Jesus Christ, our teacher. We are marked most importantly by our conviction that Jesus of Nazareth has something to teach us, especially about who God is, what God has done for our salvation, and how we can be prepared for eternal life. Ordinarily, good teachers teach about something other than themselves. Christians uniquely believe that among the most important things that Jesus can teach us is who Jesus is. For an ordinary human teacher that would be absurd. Who would want to go to a class where the topic of discussion was always the teacher? But Jesus isn t an ordinary human (He s human, just not an ordinary one). He is also the one, true God. Christians realize that the center and sum of all things is Jesus Himself. Catholic Christians distinctively understand that the only way we can authentically know what Jesus taught is in the Church He instituted. If we are not being taught by Christ through private revelation, we will have to learn what He has revealed through others. Our apostolic Church, prevented by the Holy Spirit from formally teaching error, ensures that we can know Christ s mind and will for us at least enough for our salvation. The Church enables us to be students of the Lord to hear Him as the woman at the well did. Given that opportunity, can we also be as teachable as she was? 2 Third Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017

Men s Scripture Group Inviting all men to join Deacon Larry and our St. Bede Tuesday Morning Scripture Group. We begin, first, at the 8:15 AM Mass and then proceed to Panera Bread on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach where we have a reserved area for us to gather at 9:00 AM. Share a meal and the Word of the Lord! During Lent, we will be focusing on and discussing the Lenten Scripture readings. No reservations are necessary, just come and join us. It s a great way to begin the day! Thirsting for Life-giving Waters Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people s expectations about him or the ways of God. This reversal is at play in today s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He whose parched lips will say I thirst before he dies is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. It s about Finding God in people, places and events, by Fr. Louis Studer, O.M.I. Champagne Brunch, Choir Contest, Grand Prize Car Raffle, Live Auction and Games of Chance Louis Studer did not like working on the Iowa family farm, even as a little child. So when a priest from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate came to speak at his school, Louis decided to be a priest. That was one way to get off of the farm. Through amusing and inspiring events, Fr. Louis Studer tells of his journey to the priesthood. $75/person or $725 for a table of ten Price increase after April 17, 2017: $85/person or $825/table of 10 Register online at svdpbenefit.org There will be a FREE Bus (Deluxe Motor Coach) to the Brunch from St. Mary of the Annunciation in Mundelein. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization But that wasn t the end of his searching. He had to find where God needed him most. Through people he came to know, and events that he witnessed, Fr. Louis has helped people around the world as the Oblate Director of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate. He has also helped us right here in Illinois as the Director of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois. This is an easy and entertaining book. It also contains some of Fr. Studer s personal pictures. This book teaches about the world around us and where prayer can lead us. Highly recommended by Maryann G. Calling all students grades 6th thru 12th! Come together to learn more about our faith and enjoy fellowship with others. We meet at the Knights House (across from St. Bede School) from 5:30 7:00 PM. Woman of the Year Mary Ann Danko On March 6 th members of the St. Bede Women s Club announced Mary Ann Danko to be the 2017 Woman of the Year. Mary Ann has been a parishioner for almost 40 years. She has been a member of the Women s Club for 10 years serving as secretary for three years and now as Co-President. She helps to keep the organization running efficiently and making it fun. Mary Ann has organized 2 bus pilgrimages in the last two years one to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary at Holy Hill in Hubertus, WI and a Chicago pilgrimage to three Catholic Churches. Anyone who has attended one of these tours knows her amazing energy and welcoming spirit throughout the entire day. She also organized fun outings to the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake to see Plaid Tidings, A Christmas Survival Guide and Sister s Easter Catechism - Will My Bunny Go to Heaven? Mary Ann supports all activities and special projects that the Women s Club hosts such as bake sales, Spring Tea and Fashion Show, special receptions, and so on. She always has her camera ready and makes sure articles are printed for the church bulletin. On top of being an excellent leader, Mary Ann is a devoted wife, loving mother/grandmother, faith-filled woman and loyal friend. Consider a Silent Retreat Six members of St. Bede Parish attended the March 2 5, 2017 retreat at Bellarmine Retreat House in Barrington that the Knights of Columbus advertised. It was a perfect way to begin Lent and we each set an intention to continue our practice at home. Check out www.jesuitretreat.org for additional retreats and events offered. All their retreats follow the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius and with 80 acres to wander, it is an oasis of peace in our busy world. You owe it to yourself. 10 Third Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017

You can offer your help to provide for these flowers in the form of a remembrance for family and friends. The names of those you wish to be remembered will be published in the bulletin on April 30th. To participate, please fill out the form below and return it with your donation by April 19th. Donations may be deposited in the Sunday collection (please place in a plain envelope marked Easter Remembrance ), dropped off at the parish office anytime during office hours or mailed to us. They need more than material things. They need the living water only the adults can give. It will teach them how to make decisions, take responsibility, respect themselves and others and live their commitments. With this living water they will never thirst. by Bud Ozar Parish Office Staff Fred Konopasek, Business Manager Elaine Kavanaugh, Parish/School Bookkeeper Jane Nischan, Administrative Assistant Parish Office: 847-587-2251/Parish Fax: 847-973-1765 St. Bede School & Religious Education 36399 N.
