2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor To all who gather in Queen of All Saints Basilica to celebrate the great feast of Christmas, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you and your families. You do not know how grateful to God I am for each one of you who take the time to acknowledge the fact of God s presence and action in your lives and to celebrate that presence and action in prayer and worship at Queen of All Saints Parish. Whether you are a parishioner who comes to Mass each Sunday, a parishioner who comes once in a while or a visitor coming to be with family and friends, you are all most welcome for this celebration of the birth of our Savior. I would like every Catholic person in the neighborhood to know that you are loved by God and that you will be received willingly and gladly here at the Basilica. I want to extend a special greeting to those Catholics who, for whatever reason, do not regularly participate in the practice of their faith. No matter what you may feel is the obstacle preventing you from being more closely incorporated into the community of faith that is Queen of All Saints Parish, I want you to know that the pastoral staff is here precisely to assist you on your journey of faith. We will do anything we can to remove the obstacle so that you may become more fully active once again. Please consider giving us a chance. I also want every person, no matter what faith, to know that you will be treated in a respectful and friendly way in our church. May your experience of the simple beauty and joy of our liturgies throughout the Christmas season be pleasant and memorable. I invite each one of you to take a few moments to reflect on the many Christmas festivals that have been marked in the Basilica over the years. Join the generations of those who firmly believe that God so loved the world that he sent his only-begotten Son, his Word made flesh, to take on our humanity, to dwell among us, to suffer and die out of love for us and to call us into eternal communion with him. Let the lights of the trees dazzle you. Let their brightness illuminate your mind so that you may more deeply understand the mystery of the birth of the Savior of the world in a simple manger. Let them rekindle in you the gift of faith that the Light of the World himself brings to you anew this day. Take your children or grandchildren up to show them the Nativity scene. Retell for them the Christmas story which you were told when you were a child. Mention the loving care of new parents, the humble surroundings of the child s birth, the presence of animals and their keepers, the rising of a singular star and the long journey of the Magi in search of that star and the hope it inspires. Linger a few minutes to allow the wonder and truth of that story to wash over you again, for the miracle of Christmas is not only, or even especially, for children. Allow the Christmas wreaths, flowers and plants to bear a scent of the divine into your lives. Let their freshness remind you of the life stirring in the crib that is filled with such promise. Let the beauty of their colors touch your hearts to inspire a warm and generous response to the inestimable blessing of the rebirth of Christ in your midst. Join your voices to those of your family, friends and neighbors and sing out the songs of Christmas. Let the familiar carols recall your fond memories of Christmas past and carry the significance of those treasured experiences on the waves of sound out into your future. Let them remind you that still we wait in hopeful expectation for the Second Coming of the infant reborn in our hearts today. May the peace and joy of this blessed Christmas season fill your hearts and homes throughout this Jubilee of Mercy. Merry Christmas and God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) December 25, 2016 Stewardship Spread The Joy of Christmas! At Mass on Christmas Eve we hear, I proclaim to you good news of great joy; today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord. It is this joy we need to feel, this joy we need to carry to others. Many have expressed the joy of today. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said this about Christmas: Joy is the true gift of Christmas. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to us Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives. The angel Gabriel greeted our Blessed Mother Mary with the Greek word Kaire! That means Be joyful. God is near us today; He is so near that He became a child. Let us take that joy and share it with others; let us take that joy and change our lives and the lives of others. When we say Merry Christmas let us mean it with every fabric of our being. Our Christmas collection is our largest special collection of the year. Please remember all that our parish does for all of us. And the Word became flesh December 5-11, 2016 Sunday Stewardship Donation Type Amount Users Envelopes $17,825.47 457 Loose Donation $2,800.00 n/a Elect. Giving $7,969.00 156 Total $28,594.47 YTD Total $665,651.29 - John 1:14 Jesus is God s ultimate gift of love to us. The countless other blessings that God showers upon us are nothing compared to the gift of His only Son. The only appropriate way for us to respond to such generous love is with our own generous love. When we dedicate our lives to sharing all the gifts God has placed in our hands, the peace of Christ truly will control our hearts and we will know Christmas joy every day. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. The Nativity of the Lord December 25, 2016 13
