2 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor The Catholic Marriage Encounter Movement has declared today as the World Day of Marriage, so this weekend the final blessing at all the Masses will be for married couples. It s our way of making sure that the religious foundation and meaning of St. Valentine s Day is not entirely overshadowed by the secular world which gobbles up our holy days one after another, marketing them as just so many more opportunities to buy and sell. Interesting, isn t it, in common parlance that St. Valentine s Day has become simply Valentine s Day. That way, with the holy word left out, it can appeal to more consumers. This gives me the opportunity to say a few things about Christian marriage. At a time when a growing movement favors making same sex relationships the legal equivalent of marriage, we need to reflect on the meaning of marriage, its purposes and its value to individuals, families and society. God created all that exists. He created human life. He created human life in two sexes, male and female. He created the sexes equal, but different from one another. And he created them for one another. Thus man and woman are distinct but complimentary to one another. The difference between the sexes and their complementarity are part of the natural order of creation. The nature of human sexuality makes man and woman partners with God himself for the transmission of human life. Marriage is a natural institution; it derives from the very nature of human life. The vocation to marriage is written in the very nature of man and woman as they came from the hand of the Creator. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1603) Only the union of a man and a woman can constitute a marriage. Only the union of male and female can generate the new life that is proper to marriage. By its very nature marriage is ordered to the good of the man and the woman as well as to the generation and education of children. But marriage is also a sacred union. As instituted by God, marriage is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong union of a man and a woman joined in an intimate union of life and love. In marriage a man and a woman commit themselves completely to one another and cooperate with the Creator in bringing children into the world and caring for them. These truths about marriage are among the givens about human life and love. In salvation history these truths about marriage have been confirmed by God s Revelation in Sacred Scripture and in the Tradition of the Church. The Church teaches that marriage is a sacrament, an effective sign of God s love instituted by Christ which bestows God s own life on the man and the woman. The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives the man and the woman the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ loves the Church. This grace perfects the human love of the man and the woman, strengthens the indissoluble unity of their marriage and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life. Marriage comes from God who made both male and female in his own image. It is a fundamental human and social institution. While marriage is regulated by both civil and church laws, it did not originate from either church or state, but from God. Therefore, neither church nor state has the authority to alter the basic meaning and structure of marriage. World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. Let us thank God for the living witness of faithful love that so many men and women of our parish give through their

3 for the living witness of faithful love that so many men and women of our parish give through their marriages. God bless them. And let us keep in our prayers in a special way those who are experiencing difficulty in their marriages or those who are divorced. For them Saint Valentine s Day might not be such a happy time, yet they must be assured of the Church s love and concern for them. God bless them. Monsignor John Pollard Dear Parishioners of Queen of All Saints: I am very pleased to introduce and welcome our new Pastoral Associate, Dr. Carole Eipers. Carole has held several senior positions both within the Church and in the business world, but now she is returning to her first love, the proclamation of the Word of God through the ministries of pastoral care, catechesis and evangelization. Carole represents a very strong addition to a extraordinarily competent and professional Pastoral Staff here at Queen of All Saints. Please take a few moments to look over her brief biography below and help me welcome her to our splendid parish. Monsignor John Pollard Carole M. Eipers, D. Min. 4 From the Parish Council What are you doing for Lent in this Year of Mercy? Pope Francis in his message for Lent said, Lent is a time of conversion and a time to deepen one s faith, demonstrating and sharing it through the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit. Feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, welcoming strangers, offering instruction, giving comfort on such things will we be judged. The Parish Council requests that you consider an action that extends God s compassion and mercy to those in need. Specifically, we would like you to perform Corporal or Spiritual Works of Mercy. These acts are already a part of your daily life, for example shoveling a neighbor s walk, making dinner for a friend and caring for yourself and your family. Please write down your Work of Mercy and place it in the Mercy Works baskets throughout the Basilica or our Mercy Works collection box located under the Sacred Heart of Mercy altar in the Basilica (east side). Our hope is that Queen of All Saints parishioners will perform 10,000 Corporal or Spiritual Works of Mercy this Lenten season and fill our Mercy Works box. While the number seems ambitious, it is only three works for each of us over the 40 days of Lent. As the deeds fill the box, we will see Mercy Works! Look for the Mercy Works slips in the bulletin, in the pews and by our Mercy Works baskets. Or you can your work of mercy to qasoffice@qasparish.org. Please share your work of Mercy below: Mercy Works! 4 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

6 Religious Education News Classes will reopen on Sunday, February 21st, and Tuesday, February 16 th. Both the Sunday and Tuesday classes will gather for a Lenten Prayer Service to remind us to be mindful of the works of mercy and putting them in action throughout this holy season. We invite you to do the same. More classes have signed up for their Works of Mercy actions. A second grade class has chosen to provide portable lockers for homeless teens. They are also stocking them with afterschool snacks and toiletries. A fifth grade class is offering hugs a day to someone who needs cheering up. A third grade class is organizing a clothing drive of winter clothes for a homeless shelter. Does this give you some ideas on what you can do throughout the Lenten season? Let s fill up our Parish Box of Mercy! Catholic Heart Work Camp Once again, teens are invited to participate in a week of service off campus through Catholic Heart Work Camp. Any teen entering high school or older is asked to attend a meeting on Wednesday, February 24 th from 7-9PM in the Fireplace Room with a parent. Information on a proposed trip from July will be shared along with fees and feedback from teens who have attended in the past. This is a great experience to be emerged in the wider Catholic Church. What better way to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy! VBS Theme Chosen Surf s Up! Vacation Bible School this year will have a water theme. There will be a few exciting changes, and some familiar features. We will be using Surf Shack as the core of the four day camp which begins June 27 th and will run through June 30 th. The cost for all materials (both craft and science) snack and tee shirt is $60 per camper. We are also expanding water day to two days instead of one. Campers should be 4 years of age before June 20 th and no older than going into 5 th grade. Science projects in addition to crafts, snacks, music, and bible stories fill out the morning schedule. Who is ready to hang ten while learning more about Jesus? We are also looking for adult volunteers to help out with this year s camp. If you are interested in helping out, and learn more about bible stories and how much fun they can be explored, give the RE Office a call. Join in on the fun! WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 12 Most of us spend most of our time living on the surface of life. We don t often take on the harder questions of life, but rather go about our business working, raising families, watching tv, shopping for groceries and doing what needs to be done. Most of us would rather spend a little more time reading, reflecting and talking over the deeper questions of life with those with whom we feel comfortable. We just don t seem to get around to it as often as we d like. Sunday Mass gives us a weekly opportunity to hear about and reflect on some of the more important questions in life. The readings from Sacred Scripture raise truly fundamental concerns that have troubled people since time began. What is the meaning of my lie? How am I to respond to the gift of faith that has been given me? What is God asking of me? How can I live a life that matters? Sunday Mass always provides some time as well as a safe and peaceful place to consider these deeper questions of life and death. 6 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. 11 f tewardship Committed to Christ, Queen of All Saints Basilica sharing God's gifts, building the Church together First Sunday of Lent February 14, 2016 Lent can also be a season of giving As Lent rolls around each year, people ask themselves what they re going to give up. It s often chocolate, TV, or a particular luxury item. However, maybe we can ask What extra thing can I add to my Lenten observance? It might be a few hours of volunteering, or spending more time with family or friends, or just being mindful to set aside some time for prayer each day. Lent offers us six weeks to enter deeply into the work of returning and rebuilding a loving relationship with God and with other people. Lent can about something more, not just something less. Let s consider what we now give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure. Can we do better? Should we do more? It s a new year make that adjustment! Our Weekly Stewardship for January 31, 2016 Actual to Prior Year YTD Week $25,353 $822,622 Last Year $24,400 $835,205 Difference $953 ($12,583) Actual to Budget YTD Week $25,353 $822,622 Weekly Budget $27,675 $857,925 Difference ($2,322) ($35,303) I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me. (Deuteronomy 26:10) This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your first fruits, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you remember that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day. For safe and convenient giving please consider Give Central. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held on select Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. First Sunday of Lent February 14,
