St. Bede Church 36455 N. Wilson Road, Ingleside, IL The Feast of Divine Mercy will be celebrated with a Prayer Service at St. Bede Church April 8th - 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Private Prayer Begins: 2:00 PM Sacrament of Reconcilia on: 2:00-2:50 PM Recita on of the Rosary: 2:30 PM Divine Mercy Prayer Service: 3:00 PM Venera on of Divine Mercy Image: 3:30 PM Service Concludes: 4:00 PM (Sunday Mass: 4:30 PM) April 8, 2018 Second Sunday of Easter/Sunday of Divine Mercy Church website: www.stbedechurch.com

From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Angels and Icons Chris ans have used images, both statues and pain ngs, to help them remember divine reali es almost from the beginning of the Church. Mostly this has been uncontroversial. From me to me, though, things have been rather heated. In the late 700s, the Eastern Church went through the Iconoclas c Controversy. Some of the Byzan ne Emperors, and the patriarchs they supported, removed or destroyed the sacred images in the churches. This resulted in the Second Council of Nicaea, the last of the ecumenical councils of the Church recognized by both Catholics and Orthodox. That Council required that sacred images be placed in churches (and, indeed, in homes!) for venera on. We do not, of course, worship images or statues. But they can help us recall, especially in Church during Mass, that we worship God, not just with those we see, but with all of the saints and angels in His heavenly court. I want to thank our Knights of Columbus for dona ng the sanctuary angels, and both the Knights and our Women s Club for helping defray the cost of the pedestals for the angels, St. Bede, and St. Francis (which are on order). A bit about the new icons: St. Michael. The icon to the le of the image of the Divine Mercy is of the Archangel St. Michael. He is the prince of the heavenly host and the main opponent of Satan. As such, he is a good patron for spiritual healing. St. Peregrine. The icon to the right of the Divine Mercy is of St. Peregrine. St. Peregrine died in 1345 and was a member of the Servite order. He was noted for his holiness during his life. Because of the miraculous cure of a wound in his leg, he has been adopted as the patron of those with injuries or diseases. In par cular, he is the patron of those suffering with cancer. The na onal shrine of St. Peregrine is in Chicago in the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows. I chose him because many of our parishioners have or have had cancer or have family who are figh ng that disease. He is a good patron for physical healing. The Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the Sacred Heart of Jesus we reverence the Divine love that the savior has for us and the world He came to redeem. In the Immaculate Heart of Mary, whose feast day is now always immediately following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, we reverence the Blessed Virgin s inner life, by which she was united especially to the passion of her Son. (Luke 2:35: Simeon says to Mary that a sword will pierce through your own soul also ) Together the two icons should help us recall the constant love that God has for us and, through St. Mary, help us respond to that love in the fullest measure. 2 Second Sunday of Easter/Sunday of Divine Mercy April 8, 2018

Renew My Church: Parish Naming Process St. Bede and St. Peter parishes are joining together to become one parish effec ve July 1, 2018. Both churches will retain their worship site names of St. Bede and St. Peter, but the newly formed parish will have a new name. The 6 names being considered for the new parish name and reasoning behind them are: Our Lady of the Lakes Our grouping is called The Lakes Region, we are in Lake County, and both churches have a devo on to Our Lady, Mary. Holy Family The two churches are coming together to be a new holy family. Mary, Mother of the Church This is a brand new feast day that Pope Francis has declared, recognizing that Mary is indeed the mother of the Catholic Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd Jesus is bringing the two churches or flocks together to follow God, our good shepherd. Na vity of Our Lord The two churches coming together is the start of something new, or a new birth. Christ the Light Jesus is our light that is always guiding us on our journey of faith. You may give your feedback by filling out the online survey, (which must be completed by 6 PM on Sunday, April 8th) at: h ps://goo.gl/forms/r9l0fo2jgdn8gp143. If you choose not to do the online survey, this weekend during Mass, you will be given a one- me opportunity to give your feedback by filling out a paper survey, which will be collected at Mass. A er the feedback is received, the discernment teams will offer 3 names to the Cardinal who will make the final decision of the new parish name. Please pray to the Holy Spirit to guide us all through this process. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John's Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so "that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name" (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God" (5:1) what we might refer to as being "born again." Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
