March 25, 2018 THE SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR PALM/PASSION SUNDAY 10:30 a.m. * All who are able may stand Congregation reads aloud the bold print PRELUDE Palm Branches Jean-Baptiste Faure Bettye Shirar soprano O'er all the way green palms and blossoms gay Are strewn this day in festive preparation, Where Jesus comes, to wipe our tears away, E'en now the throng to welcome Him prepare. Refrain: Join all and sing His name declare, Let ev'ry voice resound with acclamation, Hosanna! Praised be the Lord! Bless Him, who cometh to bring us salvation! *CALL TO WORSHIP Sing and rejoice, O blest Jerusalem, Of all thy sons sing the emancipation, Thro boundless love, the Christ of Bethlehem Brings faith and hope to thee forevermore. [Refrain] Blessed are those who delight in worship. Blessed are those who come in God s name. Give thanks to God, all who assemble here. God s steadfast love endures forever. Let all who follow Christ sing God s praise. Because of God s help, we are not disgraced. Open the gates of righteousness that we might enter. The works of God are marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Hosanna! Let every knee bend before Jesus! Let every tongue welcome Christ s reign! Hosanna! *PROCESSIONAL (all sing) All Glory, Laud, and Honor NO. 196 WELCOME Rev. Elizabeth Lyman

OPENING PRAYER FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Mark 11:1-11 PRAYERS OF CONFESSION AND SUPPLICATION Will we wave our leafy branches today and hide them tomorrow? Will our hosannas melt into another chorus of death? Will we, like the builders of old, reject the stone that is meant to hold all things together? Is Jesus Christ truly the cornerstone of our lives? Let us admit the truth about ourselves. Sovereign God, we confess that we are as fickle as the crowds in Jerusalem. When everything seems to be going well, we join the hosanna chorus, but in times of weariness or rebellion, praise can turn to insult. We hide our faith when it is under attack and link ourselves with the scoffers. When there is opportunity to speak a good word for Jesus Christ, we are silent. Our church lifts an uncertain word before the world, for we, its members have not been faithful. We need your forgiving love today, O God, more than ever. Hear our prayer! Amen. A Time of Silence (Please take this time in silence to offer your own prayers of confession confessing your need for God and naming those barriers that keep you from knowing life as God s beloved child.) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Jesus Christ has reconciled you to our Heavenly Parent, and presents you blameless, holy and beyond reproach. Continue to live therefore, secure and steadfast in your faith. *RESPONSE (all sing) Jesus, Remember Me NO. 227 Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom. Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom. *THE PASSING OF THE PEACE Since Christ had forgiven us, let us forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us share God s peace with each other. (We greet each other: The peace of Christ be with you. ) CHILDREN S SERMON Christina Pressley

ANTHEM How Can I Keep from Singing Quaker song, Sunday School Choir arr. G. Littleton My life flows on in endless song, above earth s lamentation. I hear the real, though far off, song that hails a new creation. No storm can shake my in-most calm while to that rock I m clinging. It sounds an echo in my soul; how can I keep from singing? What though the tempest round me roars, I know the truth, it liveth. What though the darkness round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake my in-most calm while to that rock I m clinging. Since love is lord of heav n and earth, how can I keep from singing? CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER INVITATION TO THE TABLE SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Mark 14:12-25 DISTRIBUTION OF ELEMENTS (The elements of bread or gluten-free crackers and unfermented juice will be served today in the front of the Sanctuary. Please leave your pew by the center aisle and return via the side aisles.) COMMUNION MUSIC Deep River Spiritual, arr. Mark Hayes Carol Lind soprano Deep river, my home is over Jordan. Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into camp-ground. Deep river, my home is over Jordan. Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into camp-ground. Oh, don't you want to go to that gospel feast, that promised land where all is peace? Oh, deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into camp-ground. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION SOLO Were You There Spiritual, arr. Melva W. Costen Christina Pressley THE READING OF THE PASSION FROM THE GOSPEL OF ST. MATTHEW *HYMN NO. 221 O Sacred Head Now Wounded v. 1 O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

RESPONSIVE PRAYER ON CHRIST S PASSION AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Redeemer suffered death, was buried, and rose again for our sake. With love let us adore him, aware of our needs. Christ our teacher, for us you were obedient, even to death: Teach us to obey God s will in all things. Christ our life, by dying on the cross you destroyed the power of evil and death: Enable us to die with you, and to rise with you in glory. Christ our strength, you were despised and humiliated as a condemned criminal: Teach us humility by which you saved the world. Christ our salvation, you gave your life out of love for us: Help us to love one another. Christ our savior, on the cross you embraced all time with your outstretched arms: Gather all the scattered children of God into your realm. Jesus, Lamb of God, Have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, Have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, Grant us peace. Eternal God, as we are baptized into death with Jesus Christ, so give us the grace of repentance that we may pass through the grave with him and be born again to eternal life. For He is the One, who was crucified, dead and buried, and rose again for us, Jesus our Savior, in whose name we pray BRINGING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS This morning we receive the offering for One Great Hour of Sharing. Let us give with grateful hearts. OFFERTORY Thy Will Be Done Craig Courtney Chancel Choir Refrain: Our cup was filled with darkness. Our cup was filled with death. Christ took our cup and drank it, and gave us life, and gave us hope, gave us Himself. My Father, let this cup pass from me. Yet not my will, O Lord, but thine be done. In blackest night we hear Him in dark Gesthemane Pleading with the Father for one more way, for one more hope, for one more day. [Refrain] Then they took our Savior and let Him to a tree; And there they broke His body, poured out His life, put Him to death to rise again! [Refrain]

*DOXOLOGY (all sing) What Wondrous Love Is This NO. 215, v. 3 To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; While millions join the theme, I sing! *PRAYER OF DEDICATION God, your call to us is both great and challenging. On this Sunday when we offer our One Great Hour of Sharing gifts, may what we share bring justice and help to those in need, and may your light break forth in our lives and in the lives of those served through our shared ministry. Amen *HYMN NO. 223 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross vs. 1 & 4 *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION POSTLUDE All My Trials arr. Bob Chilcott Chip Hazel baritone If religion was a thing that money could buy, the rich would live and the poor would die. All my trials, Lord, soon be over. Oh, I have a little book that sets me free, and every page spells liberty. All my trials, Lord, soon be over. Too late, my brothers! Too late, but never mind. All my trials, Lord, soon be over.
