1 THE SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE LORD S DAY BAPTISM OF OUR LORD ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF ELDERS AND DEACONS January 13, :30 a.m. * All who are able may stand Congregation reads aloud the bold print THE TIME OF CENTERING "Our calling is where our deepest gladness and the world's hunger meet." ~ Frederick Buechner THE COMMUNITY OF FAITH GATHERS PRELUDE Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart Mark Hayes Jeffrey DeVault, organ WELCOME Rev. Kathie S. Pownall THE LIGHT OF CHRIST ENTERS Take Me to the Water Chancel Choir African-American spiritual *CALL TO WORSHIP Sisters and brothers, today we recall: Jesus came to the waters of baptism. In baptism, our Creator claims us and frees us from the power of hatred and death. In baptism we are joined to Christ and we are joined together in unity, recalling, There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. In baptism, the Spirit of God anoints us for ministry and makes us signs of divine love. It is the mark of acceptance into the church and the beginning of our growth into full Christian faith and discipleship. Therefore on this day, the whole church, the Body of Christ, remembers and celebrates. Let us worship God! *HYMN NO. 476 Crashing Waters at Creation
2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION based on Isaiah 43: 1-2 Gracious God, we confess that too often we live as though we are fearful, not faithful. When we encounter the waters of chaos and confusion, we don t easily pass through them, but we obsess about the height of the water instead of the sight of the other side. You promised to walk through the rivers with us. Help us believe. And help our unbelief. (Time of silent personal confession) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Thus says the God who created you and formed us in God s image: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. This is the good news! I belong to God! *RESPONSE (all sing) Baptized in Water NO. 482, v. 3 Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ our King; Born of the Spirit, we are God s children; joyfully now God s praises we sing. *GREETING OF PEACE Since God has made peace with us, let us make peace with each other. The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. (We greet each other: The peace of Christ be with you. Please feel free to just place your hand over your heart during the passing of the peace. We want you to stay healthy as well as peaceful.) CHILDREN S SERMON Christina Pressley PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION The Waters of Life James Biery Chancel Choir The Father s voice calls us above the waters The glory of the Son shines on us The love of the spirit fills us with life SCRIPTURE LESSONS Isaiah 42:1-9 p. 584 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Matthew 3:13-17 p. 784
3 MEDITATION To What Are You Called? Kathie Pownall *HYMN NO. 489 Wonder of Wonders, Here Revealed vs. 1, 2, & 4 JOYS AND CONCERNS INVITATION TO THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Water of Life Noble Cain Chancel Choir Water of Life, eternal Spring, from the heavenly fountain, Let me drink my fill with Thee, pure as snow-clad mountain; Let mankind that thirsteth here, in this world below, Feel Thy cooling grace in heart, and Thy goodness know. As that early well did give strength to weary frame, Let me draw the drink for Thee, believing in Thy Name; And, in turn, behold Thy face, listen to Thy voice, Drinking of Thy living well, make my heart rejoice! Savior, in Thy heav nly grace may Thy mercy rain Streams of living water down on men s souls again. Let my strength thus be renewed, as I work for Thee; Let my life thus be assured, live eternally! Amen *DOXOLOGY (all sing) Praise God who calls us on from here, Words by Rev. Roger Lynn Praise Christ whose Presence calms our fear. Praise Holy Spirit in our lives, God calls and leads and through us thrives. Amen *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Holy Spirit, flow through us with the gift of baptismal waters, so that we might become a river of reconciliation. Grant us Your peace, O God, that we might carry it to others like an ever-flowing stream. Set our hope on Christ, so we might build such hope in our neighborhoods and communities. As we open our hands and our hearts to You, O God, might our lives become a living prayer that shares the abundance of Your love and grace. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
4 ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF DEACONS AND RULING ELDERS RULING ELDERS DEACONS Dorothy Harding, Class of 2021 Sally Coulson, Class of 2021 Marcie Jorgensen*, Class of 2021 Carol Schlegel, Class of 2021 Melanie Slezak, Class of 2021 *To be ordained LITANY OF GIFTS from Romans 12 As in one body we have many parts and each part has its own function, so all of us together with Christ are one body, and we all belong to each other. We have different gifts according to the grace God has given us. If your gift is to hear God s Word, Speak it out in faith. If your gift is service, Live to serve others. If your gift is the heart of a teacher, Teach what is true. Let preachers preach with conviction, and givers give freely; Let officers work diligently for the people, and let those who serve the poor serve gladly. Let us not lack for enthusiasm, but be ardent in spirit, Serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, patient in suffering, constant in prayer, supporting one another and welcoming all! STATEMENT OF ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES Clerk of Session: Representing the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, the Session of Concord Presbyterian Church now ordains Marcie Jorgensen as a Ruling Elder. Ruling Elders and Deacons: I do. Ruling Elders and Deacons: I will. Will you be governed by our church's polity, and will you abide by its discipline? Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world? Ruling Elders and Deacons: I will. Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church? Ruling Elders and Deacons: I do. Will you pray for and seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love?
