Jim Happy New Year!!! Last month we had to cancel Masses on two weekends because of weather issues. I don t like to cancel Masses, but sometimes it is necessary, so people don t foolishly try to attend and are harmed. Because of these cancelations, I m reprinting my polices on cancelling and on winter common sense rules. When weather conditions require the Mass to be cancelled on Sunday morning. No one will be required to attend a Mass that day. The Sunday obligation will be dispensated for everyone! I will still offer the 10:00 AM Mass here at St. Boniface in Garner and Fr. Paul will probably offer the 10:30 AM Mass at St. James in Forest City. But no one will be required to attend these Masses. I still will offer one on these Sundays, but no one must attend, especially the not elderly. If Mass is cancelled on Saturday night, the Sunday obligation is also dispensated. Just remember that weather conditions automatically dispense the Sunday obligation, whether your communities Mass is cancelled or not. These common sense rules apply from November through April each year, but they are also common sense enough to be used throughout the year. They are in line with all liturgical rules, rubrics, and guidelines of the Church. The spread of germs happens when people with a cold or flu unnecessarily shake hands, drink from the communion cup, or cough on each other. To avoid these unnecessary acts, these three following rules should be observed: 1. No one is required to shake hands at the sign of peace. The rubrics only require the words peace be with you or and with you, not a handshake. A simple wave, head bow, or look when saying these words is just as appropriate as a handshake. 2. When receiving Eucharist, no one has to receive from both the host and the cup. Receiving from the host contains both the body and blood of Jesus. So if you have a cold/flu or are concerned about the spread of germs, do not receive from the cup! 3. At the end of the procession out of Mass, I will not stay in the back of the Church to shake hands ; instead, I will immediately return to the sacristy to avoid any temptation to shake my hand and spread germs. This does not mean I don t want to be friendly, but just as a common-sense way to avoid germ spreading. We all can have a germ-free Mass with these three common sense rules this new year of 2017. Dear Archangels Catholic Cluster, In March of the upcoming year, I have been given the opportunity to go to Peru over spring break for a medical mission with 7 other students, two registered nurses, and (hopefully) a priest. As a group, we will be running clinics and providing care to the people of Picota, Peru. I am inviting you to join in on our mission to Peru. With contributions from generous donors, our group can cover travel costs and purchase needed medical supplies for those in Picota. Please make the check out to Benedictine College Ministry Fund and write Peru Medical Mission in the memo line. Since Benedictine College is a non-profit organization, you will then receive a tax receipt for your gift. Please send checks to, Benedictine College, Susan Pistek Box 72, 1020 N. 2 nd St., Atchison, KS 66002 JANUARY 8, 2017 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD 3
