Living the Word of Christ Together Pastor: Deacons: Office Administrator: Rectory Phone: Office Phone: Fax: e-mail: website: Father Bruce Riebe Bill Fredrick, Robert Kirschner Michele Wiltshire 440-526-1818 440-526-0016 440-526-6464 stjoebyz@sbcglobal.net www.stjoebyz.com The forty days are complete; now we enter our most holy of weeks liturgically speaking. Each day is highlighted below. Make attendance a priority in your life. You ll be glad that you did! Monday & Tuesday The Moleben to Jesus the Lover of Mankind is celebrated. It includes a short homily from Father and the Supplication to the Blessed Sacrament (in Old Slavonic). Wednesday The same Presanctified Liturgy as during Lent except there s a Gospel and a homily (Deacon Robert). Holy Thursday You ll experience Vespers and the Liturgy of St. Basil commemorating the Betrayal of Judas and the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. (Sermon by Deacon Bill) Good Friday In the morning come hear the Twelve Passion Gospels. Complete segments from each of the four Evangelists dealing with the events leading up to and including the crucifixion are chanted. (A candle is extinguished following each reading.) At night you ll experience one of the most moving services in the Byzantine Church the burial vespers. Many folks have been drawn to tears as the Shroud is processed around the church and laid in the tomb. Make certain you venerate the wounds prior to departure maybe even taking the last steps toward the tomb on your knees. (Father will preach.) Holy Saturday The Vigil Service features vespers along with the Liturgy of St. Basil. The verses highlight Christ s Descent into Hades. Just prior to the Gospel, which announces the women finding the tomb empty, the priest, deacon and servers change from black to bright vestments. (Sermon by Deacon Robert) Later that evening, arguably the most popular service of all in the Byzantine Church is celebrated Resurrection Matins. Holding candles, those who are able, depart from the church, process outside, return to the front doors, finally entering to find the church ablaze with light and song. It is during this time that we start to sing the Easter Anthem Christ is Risen! Easter Sunday As we continue in the spirit of the Resurrection, the Gospel is chanted in Slavonic, Greek, Latin and English, symbolic of the Good News of the Resurrection being open to all peoples of the earth. The choir will sing at the second liturgy that morning. (Father will incorporate Bishop Milan s Pastoral Message.) (Times for the services described above can be found on the next page.)
