Redeemer Good News July 2016 REDEEMER July 2016 Pastor Steve Ferber GOD IS FAITHFUL! Can you imagine two people being more different? Dennis Rodman, eccentric former NBA star, and Kim Jong-un, leader of North Korea. Yet, there they were, sitting together and shaking hands. Rodman has made several trips to North Korea, and calls the Kim Jong-un his friend. God uses sometimes bizarre circumstances to carry out His will. In April 2013, American missionary Kenneth Bae was I : Redeemer Lutheran School... 2 Servant Event for the Blind... 3 Music & Worship Notes... 4 Redeemer s Vision... 6 Annual Voters Meeting Recap... 6 New Facility Use Guide... 6 R.A.D.I.C.A.L. Sharing the Changeless Christ in a Changing World! sentenced to 15 years hard labor by the government of North Korea for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. Not long after the sentencing, Rodman took to Twitter with an urgent request: I m calling on the Supreme Leader of North Korea or as I call him Kim, to do me a solid and cut Kenneth Bae loose. After two years in prison, Bae was freed. Amazingly, God used Dennis Rodman to accomplish His will. God heard the prayers of so many who called on the Lord to free His servant. During his imprisonment, God used Bae s captivity to grow his faith. The REVEREND. missionary said, I learned to say, Lord, You know my heart but not my will but yours be done. I give up my right to go home, and I leave my family to You. My prayer changed from Send me home, Lord to Use me, Lord. After that, God started opening doors for me to connect with my captors. I was building genuine relationships. I want readers to know that God is faithful that we go through difficulties in life, but God never leaves us, never forsakes us. We need to let the Lord do His work, and then depend upon Him during times of difficulty, whether that s a North REFLEC TIO NSRRREFLECTIONS Korean prison or anything else. Bae s words show a deep understanding of God s will. Freedom became less and less important. Being used by God, whether in or out of prison, (Reflections continued on page 3)

2 Redeemer Good News July 2016 REDEEMER LUTHERAN SCHOOL THE MORE THINGS CHANGE Public education in Minnesota has changed dramatically over the past few years. We are experiencing the intrusion of laws and regulations that are in direct opposition to our faith and values as Christians. These initiatives are being integrated into classrooms at every grade in the public school system. At Redeemer, we make every decision based on God s Word and integrate it into our curriculum, classrooms, hallways, playground, and more. This permits us to come alongside you as parents and support your parenting ministry. Hebrews 13:8. The take -away is that tapping into God can help us weather all kinds of change with grace and resilience. We don t have to search for new publications and books for our guiding sense of purpose we ve got THE Book and it s the basis for all we do at Redeemer. It doesn t change! Our central reason for being has remained constant to impart teachings for a LIFEtime: Learning, Integrity, Faith and Excellence. We are constantly searching for ways to be a school of excellence, using teachings for a LIFEtime as the guideline for all we do. Submitted by Linda Wiebold, School Administrator Do you know someone who could benefit from consistency in their lives? Direct them to us. We ve been here for 38 years, and are still going strong! Redeemer Good News July 2016 3 (Reflections continued from page 1) became his heart s desire. Bae began building relationships with the prison guards, witnessing to them by his loving actions and words. God is so faithful to us. As we give our lives to Him, He opens doors to serve. In difficult times, He comforts us and gives us strength. He reminds us that Jesus is always with us. We are God s forgiven children, on earth to serve our Savior, whatever the circumstances. On our recent trip to China, Donna and I experienced God s overwhelming faithfulness and love: A safe journey, two beautiful new children, and now the joy and challenge of raising our four girls. Already He is at work, faithfully binding us together. It is not easy; every day is a challenge! But God is faithful. He is growing our faith as we trust Him and step out with His will in mind: Not my will but Yours be done. God is faithful! Don t give up in difficult circumstances. Jesus is with you always. Look for ways to do the Lord s will by loving people. In Christ, (RLS continued from page 2) responsible for helping us to respond to emergencies in the building. 4 Redeemer Good News July 2016 MUSIC & WORSHIP NOTES SUMMER SING-ALONGS CONTINUE IN JULY & AUGUST Summer worship at Redeemer brings the unique opportunity to sing some favorite hymns, gospel songs, spirituals, Sunday School songs, and good old family favorites that tend to get forgotten in the development of new hymnals and songbooks. Congregation members are invited to write down their ten favorite songs and give the list to Redeemer s Music Director, Dan Oie, who will compile a summer list of sing-along songs for the opening 5 10 minutes of worship. These songs will be heard during the prelude and then as a medley for the opening of worship each Sunday. Some songs may be a part of the service or communion time. Invite your friends and family members to church as they will enjoy these songs as well. This sing-along for July 3 will include patriotic hymns. REDEEMER WORSHIP SERVICES SPECIAL MUSIC July 3... The week culminated in a show in which the kids demonstrated their singing ability, both as a group and as solos, memorization of acting parts, songs, and daily Scripture verses, along with learning how our lives are part of God s big plan constructing a personal Masterpiece in each person s life. Pastor Ferber had a minor role in the play, along with Ben Wagner, our own Joe Carpenter. Thanks to our assistant director, Cheryl Oie, and many youth and adult helpers. ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL Dan Oie, Redeemer Music Director, will be the music director for six performances of the Addams Family Musical presented by the Buffalo Community Theater at Buffalo High School. The musical involves a cast of 30 singers, along with a 10-piece Spanish orchestra. The story is about an unusual family, the Addams, that attempts to relate to the outside world through the anticipated romantic relationship of their oldest daughter Wednesday. Modeled after the highly popular TV show from the 1960s, this 90- minute overly dramatic episode demonstrates the resolve of two children who struggle to introduce their weird families to one another. The drama director and choreographer for this show is Ben Wagner, a regular Redeemer attendee, who played a small role in our recent Redeemer Music Camp, Kids Under Construction. The Addams Family presents their characters in a unique way of full disclosure. This is a fast moving and exciting family show for all ages. The dates for the show are JULY 22, 23, 24 (SUNDAY MATINEE), 28, 29 AND 30. The evening shows are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at www.buffalocommunitytheater.org starting three weeks before the show. Tickets are $15, $12 and $8. In His Service, Paul Kieffer Congregation Chairman NEW FACILITY USE GUIDE IS NOW IN PLACE As members of Redeemer Lutheran Church and School, you are able to reserve rooms in our facility. You are also able to reserve and borrow tables, chairs, etc., for use off church property. The new policy now requires that all such activities be approved ahead of time by the Church Administrator, Stacy Klone. The reason for the new policy is so that when groups come in who have reserved space in our facility, they will also find their room unoccupied, and all chairs/tables/ kitchen equipment/sports equipment, etc., that they had expected to use, to be there. Please stop by the church office and pick up a copy of the new "Facility Policy and Procedures Use Guide." We want to use our facility to the glory of God. We ask for your help in making this happen!

The money will be split between the Wounded Warrior Project and K9s For Warriors two amazing organizations that provide much needed support for our wounded military members in their effort to reenter society after war. God bless these wonderful kids for living out their faith and honoring their Lord and Savior through servanthood! 8 Redeemer Good News July 2016 SUMMER WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY Once a month during the summer, come and join us for a Bible Study on Women Who Believed God. We will meet on the second Wednesdays of July and August, and spend some time looking at the lives of Abigail, Salome, Eunice and Lois. Are you unfamiliar with these particular ladies? They are lesser known, ordinary women who dared to trust God, and in the process influenced their families, changed their communities, and affected the course of history. Not bad for ordinary women! We will meet on July 13, and August 10, at 10:00 am in the Gathering Room. We hope you will join us as we all find encouragement to imitate their faith. For more information contact Mary Sund at 763-233-2417 or Linda Krantz at 763-476-0587. SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE STUDY HOUR Join Pastor Steve at 9:30 am Sundays in the auditorium for a new Bible Study journey to ancient times, places, and customs. Faith Lessons on the Death and Resurrection of the Messiah is a videobased series led by noted teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan. It was filmed in Israel and throughout the Middle East and brings together history, culture, and geography to illuminate the Gospels. The series focuses on the last week of Jesus life, his death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit s visit on Pentecost. YOUTH MINISTRY Summer 2016 is underway! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather as well as the time off from schoolwork and other school year routines. We had a great week of VBS here at Redeemer with over 75 kids participating. I am very thankful for our students who stepped up as leaders throughout the week and made VBS a great experience for all the kids who attended. It was truly a team effort and the Body of Christ in motion. I couldn't be more proud of them. Our Wednesday night ministry is still going though it has morphed for the summer. The Gathering Joe Lomando, Student Ministry Director UNPLUGGED takes place most Wednesday nights throughout the summer. Come join us and have a great time with your peers or meet some new peeps. Feel free to contact me with any questions. You are loved!

Redeemer Good News July 2016 11 R P D! Do you ever see people in church and wonder what their names are? Have you ever heard an announcement regarding a member and wished you could put a face with a name? Are you new to our church and wish you had something to help you put names with faces? Help is on the way! We are producing a pictorial directory for our church. Photo sittings will be on July 18, 19, & 20, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, from 2:00pm to 9:00pm. There are two ways to sign up for your photo sitting. You can sign up at home on your own computer by going to the Redeemer website, redeemerwayzata.org, and on the bottom of the C home page, you will find a link to LifeTouch. Click on the link, and follow the instructions. It s that easy! Or, you can sign up at church in-between services on June 19 & 26 and July 3 &10, with the help of the Pictorial Directory Committee, Kristine Anderson, Minnie Ann Klone, Linda Krantz, and one of hopefully many volunteers, Cheryl Oie. They will help you find and select a time slot that works for you. After your photo sitting is complete, you will be able to view your portraits right away, and select any you would like to purchase. A price list will be available ahead of time for you to use in making your decisions. Best of all, there is no cost to you, and every family unit who has their portrait taken gets a free 8x10 portrait, and a free church directory! So don t delay, sign up for a photo sitting time slot that works with your schedule. LifeTouch is partnering with us to have a food drive during our photography sign-ups. They are asking families to bring in a non-perishable food item for our local food shelf, IOCP. They will in turn give you a $5.00 off certificate toward any portrait purchase in thanks for your donation. The idea for Feed the Need began when Lifetouch learned that some churches were hesitant to offer new directories or portrait sessions because many in their congregation were facing financial hardships. At the same time, food shelves throughout the nation were seeing an increase in people needing assistance. From these conversations, the Feed the Need program was created. A $10 certificate is sent to all that sign up online. Lifetouch knows not everyone uses the internet, and they are automatically offering the $10 certificate to everyone, should you choose to purchase. The Pictorial Directory Committee is seeking volunteers to serve as a host or hostess during the actual photography sessions. The shifts are 2:00pm to 5:30pm and 5:30pm to 9:00pm. Please contact a Directory Committee member to volunteer. The sooner you sign up for a photo sitting, the better. So sign up soon!
