2 We hear a lot about the New Evangelization. What is it? The New Evangelization calls all Catholics to be Evangelized and then to Evangelize others. How do we do it? We are evangelized when we take the opportunity to learn and come to a deeper understanding and appreciation our Catholic Faith. We evangelize others by the way we live our faith and by invitation. In the last 25 years hundreds of people have joined the Catholic Church at St. Jude through the RCIA. Most came because they were evangelized by family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Tom attended Mass with his wife and family for 43 years before he came to RCIA and joined the Church. When asked why he didn t do it sooner he said No one ever asked me! Cynthia was attracted to the Catholic Church by the stories her friends shared about the rich history, the moral convictions, spiritual treasures, ancient traditions and ritual of the Catholic Church. Amy wanted the spiritual experience, the strong faith and sense of community her neighbors experienced at St. Jude s Sarah s co-worker who was attending RCIA at St. Jude passed on his enthusiasm for the Catholic Church to her. She fell in love with the Catholic way of living. Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20 after the 5pm and 7, 9 and 11am Masses St. Jude R.C.I.A. will host INQUIRY SUNDAY Come to advance your own faith. Invite family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers who have ever shown a curiosity about the Catholic Faith to come or to contact Joyce Noll Racine at or jracine@stjudefw.org Meet Our New Church Building Manager Hi, I'm Mike Crick. I have been a member of St. Jude for 14 years. My wife Kathleen substitute teaches here. My son Alex is Junior at Bishop Dwenger and my daughter Anna is a 6th grader at St. Jude. I take pride in my work and hopefully you will see a difference. Exaltation of the Cross Exaltation (or Triumph) of the Cross, September 14, is on a Sun day this year. We will venerate the Holy Cross at all Sunday Masses. Check out the Liturgy section of our website as Sept. 14 get closer to learn more about the Triumph of the Cross. Sign up weekend is Sept or you can sign up on line or contact Joyce at or jracine@stjudefw.org Learning and Living the Faith for Students By Sue Sherburne At Baptism we, as parents, promise to raise our children in the Catholic faith which means we are to teach our children: 1. about Christ s life and what He asks of us; 2. how to pray to build that relationship with Christ and 3. to guide our children in living a life of love and service to others. If your children are not enrolled in our parish school, then our Religious Education Program is here to assist you with bringing the faith alive in your children. Please consider enrolling your kindergarten through 8 th grade children in our Tuesday evening program. Classes are held in the school from 6:30 7:45. The updated registration form and schedule of meeting dates can be found at stjudefw.org under Education. The parent handbook is linked there and will soon be updated. If you have any questions, please contact Sue at the Parish Office at
4 St. Jude Parent Orientation Day HASA will again conduct a Back to School Orientation Day. This day will be used to gather information from preschool through 8 th grade for the school, fill out volunteer time & talent sheets, view the safety video (needed by ALL school volunteers), sign up for lunch/recess duty, AND let you know who your child s teacher will be for the school year. Orientation day will be held Tuesday, August 12 th from 9:00am-12:00pm and 4:00pm 7:00pm. This does not take the place of the Ice Cream Social. When you attend the Ice Cream Social (August 17 th from 2-3:30pm), the class list will be posted so your child will find out who is in their class. We look forward to seeing everyone there. Please look for a mailing later this summer that will contain more information. Those chairpersons who need a table at Orientation Day, please contact Amy Simmons at (home) or (cell). VOLUNTEERS are needed, if interested, please call Amy Simmons hoosierincincy@yahoo.com. HASA helps purchase new bleachers for school gym After many years of trying to replace the old bleachers in the school gym, the dream will finally become a reality. The new bleacher project for our school gym was made possible by donations from the St Jude Home and School Association, the Mary Cross Tippmann Foundation, and members of the 5th grade boys basketball team. The new bleachers are in memory of Joe Becker, our former youth minister and 5th grade boys basketball coach. The old bleachers will be removed this summer and the new bleachers will be installed and ready for the new school year. HASA was thrilled to be able to donate towards this wonderful improvement for our school. Part of the money raised at last year's HASA Silent Auction helped fund this project. We thank everyone who helps support the auction, HASA and our parish and school in general. We couldn't take on a project of this magnitude without the time, talent and treasure of the people of St. Jude. We hope to see you at the auction in October. God bless and enjoy your summer. Sincerely, HASA Silent Auction Saturday October 4 from 7-11:30 pm. Scout park conference center, 2300 Meyer Road. Our theme this year is Castaway Keep up on the latest St. Jude Silent Auction news! 5 St. Jude 5th Graders Visit St. Felix By Theresa Ley On Thursday, April 10th, the fifth grade visited St. Felix Catholic Center in Huntington, IN. Several Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, welcomed us with open arms. Sister Maria Carol, Sister Kelly, and Sister Katie began the class retreat with the vocation talk. Sister Katie explained that we need to practice saying "yes" to things such as folding the laundry, so that when God calls us to our vocation in life we are ready to say "yes" to Him. The students recognized immediately that the Sisters are so happy and full of joy. The Sisters responded to this observation by saying that they are so full of joy because they are becoming the person God has called them to be. This allows them to be so fulfilled. They reminded the students that God has a special call for each of them. After the vocation talk, the students were able to say a rosary in the grotto, play a Catechism game, and take a tour of St. Felix. St. Felix was explained to be a very special place because within its walls lived Ven. Solanus Casey. They even got to see the room he lived in when he was there. The students learned that prior to his time of "relaxing" at St. Felix, Fr. Solanus Casey was a doorkeeper. As a doorkeeper he met many people and spent time listening to their problems. Solanus had a very close relationship with God, and God worked through him to pray for many people. Many of these people were able to work through their problems or get a special miracle with the help of prayer from Fr. Solanus. The day ended with Mass and lunch at St. Felix. Fourteen Sisters were able to join us for the Mass. Father Ron Reider spoke to the students again about listening for God's call and thanked them for spending a prayerful day with the Lord. He left them with a challenge to spend 10 minutes a day in silence so that they could talk to God. School Board Parish Council By Sister Kathleen The following will serve on the School Board: Fr. Jake, Sr. Kathleen, Carrie Heck, Cyndi Kelly, Steve Yaggy, Rob Henry, Maria Odle, Susan Schenkel, Bob Bergeron and Michelle Kraus. We are grateful for the generous contributions of Kurt Beuchel and Beth Shanebrook who will no longer be serving on the board. Newly elected members Mike Ankenbruck, John Hill, Julie Renninger and Jeanne Wagner will join Fr. Jake, Fr. Bob, Sr. Kathleen Marie, Mary Pohlman, Tim Burns, Beth Kuebler-Wolf, Scott Krebs, Dave Sayler, Steve Sholl and Suzanne Zschernitz on Parish Pastoral Council. 5
6 Time for a New Parish Picture Directory By Mary Pohlman Why should I participate? Many of us know people in the parish by faces, but don t know their names. The new parish picture directory is a great way to put names and faces together. It s also a great way to tell our parish story by highlighting the various spiritual, social and service activities around the parish. The best way to make the directory useful is to have everyone in the parish be a part of it. Everyone who participates will receive a free 8 x 11 photo and a free picture directory. There is no obligation to buy anything. If you do wish to purchase photos, price sheets will be available before you come for your pictures so that you can decide on your needs and budget before you arrive. When will pictures be taken? Lifetouch who bought out Olan Mills (the company who did our last several directories) and who also takes our school pictures will be taking the portrait photos this year. They will be here Tuesday through Saturdays July 29 August 2, August 5 9, September and September 30 October 4. Weekday hours are 2:00 9:00pm, Saturdays 9:00am 4:00pm. Our hope is to provide various months so that it s easier to work around sport schedules, college students, parking congestion, and busy lives. How do I sign up? Sign up is easy--- click on the picture directory icon on the parish website, and follow the easy steps. Those who sign up online will receive a $10 coupon good toward any purchase. You will also be able to sign up before and after Masses during the month of July and September. Lifetouch also sponsors a Feed the Need program. By bringing a non-perishable food item for the Beacon Heights Food Bank when you come for photography, you can receive a $5 off coupon. What can I do to help? 1. If you have pictures of any parish events, them to picturedirectory@stjudefw.org or drop them off at the parish office or in church. 2. Volunteer as a receptionist for a few hours one of the days of photography. 3. Help with sign up before and/or after weekend Masses. Join Us for the St. Jude Parish Ice Cream Social Sunday, August :30pm Call Mary Pohlman at the parish office ( ) to volunteer. Class lists will be posted Senior Group to see Fiddler on the Roof Our parish Senior s Group will be traveling to The Wagon Wheel Playhouse in Warsaw on Thursday, July 24 for the matinee performance of Fiddler on the Roof. Our bus leaves at 12:30pm from the St. Jude parking lot and will return by 6pm. Sack lunch will be provided on the bus. Cost is $42. Call the parish office to reserve a spot. 6
7 St Jude VBS The participants went back to 33AD and walked in Jesus' footsteps. They saw dramas telling of Jesus' Holy Week, made crafts at various Marketplace shops, attended Synagogue School and learned Bible games at the Village Playground. They found out how life was different in Jesus' time and learned some great songs. Shalom! 7
