St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time "You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." The only thing we really know about when Jesus will come again is that we won't be expecting it. As Jesus instructs us today, the best plan of action is thus to be prepared at all times. We need to be ready and waiting to meet Jesus so that when he does return, it won't catch us off guard. A little thought experiment might be helpful here. Let's imagine that the doorbell rings this evening after dinner. We open the door and find Jesus standing there. He asks to come in. Are we ready for this honored guest? What will he find when he steps in unannounced? Is everyone at peace around the house? Is everyone speaking with love and acting with generosity? Is there anything in our home that, in his presence, we might be ashamed of--books, shows, movies, or music that aren't appropriate? Pictures, Facebook posts, or a record of Internet history that we hope he won't discover? Now, imagine that he came unannounced into our HEARTS this evening. What would he find there? Are our hearts ready to welcome Jesus? In truth, we need not wait for the second coming to have Jesus in our hearts. He wants to live there already today! So regardless of the timing of the second coming of Christ, we would do well to follow the traditional spiritual practice of a daily examination of conscience to see where we are doing well and where we need to make changes. Taking such a deliberate spiritual inventory is an excellent way to help us be ready for Jesus like those servants "who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks." Year of Mercy: Hard but clear words today. Jesus tells his beloved little flock that includes us to sell belongings and give alms. Do not be afraid. Sell. Give. Yet we are sometimes afraid to let go, to give away. I really like this, we say. I might need it later, we say. Since we are numbered among his disciples, what Jesus said to Peter and to the rest of the Followers, he says to us: Do not fear Give alms Be ready to act for the benefit of others; be ready to do what is good So, this week, I will Laudato Si: The second major principle of the Earth Charter speaks to ecological integrity. Among the four suggested ways of doing this are: protecting and restoring the integrity of earth s ecological systems, with special concern for biological diversity and the natural processes that sustain life. Today s news told of a family of four who, while on vacation, began to suffer paralysis due to toxic spray used to kill insects. One of the ways we can fight against events like this happening is to prevent pollution of any part of the environment (land, air, water ) and allow no build-up of radioactive, toxic or other hazardous substances. Psalm 33:20 So much of life revolves around waiting: in traffic, in line at the supermarket, for the birth of a child, for the last breath of a loved one, for test results, for hoped for or dreaded news. Perhaps we might see in these words of Psalm 33 an invitation to reflect on just what it is or who it is for whom we wait. Then, perhaps, we could make a waiting list that describes our personal, individual desire as well as our collective, communal waiting. What is it for which our world longs and hopes in our shared waiting time? What is the corporate ache and yearning of our global community that we might give over in prayer to God, who is our help and our shield? Sr. Chris Koellhoffer, I.H.M.
