St. Vincent de Paul Church, Diane Nowacki and Helpers Parish Administrator, St. Anthony/St. Mary Parishes Rev. Msgr. Ross A. Shecterle (Ext. 11) Associate Pastor, St. Anthony/St. Mary Parishes Fr. Richard Wendell (Ext. 14), wendellr@archmil.org April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month Parents and guardians have the primary responsibility for protecting their children from all potential harm. The following are points to be aware of and looked into more closely. Know your kids school, including the people that teach and work there. If your child doesn t attend a Catholic school, does your school have a training program or policy in place dealing with sexual abuse? Keep your child s personal information personal - make sure children aren't sharing personal information on the internet. Once out there, it is hard to erase. Go to www.netsmartz.org to see about deleting personal information already shared. Parents and guardians need to get involved in their children s activities in school, sports, etc., to know what they are doing and who is working with them. Be vigilant in seeing who is interacting with your children and where your children are spending their time. Go over the rules many times regarding staying away from strangers, reporting strange incidents immediately, being approached by someone, etc. Know the warning signs of abuse. Preventing Child Abuse Is Everyone s Responsibility It is every adult s moral responsibility to protect possible victims by reporting the suspected abuse or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive societal problem, and only concerted and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. To report suspected abuse of a minor, call your local authorities or Child Protective Services.
