FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE This weekend we conclude our celebration of Respect Life Month. During October we have highlighted life issues that need our attention, our prayers and our response throughout the year. Thank you for your participation in and support of many of the Respect Life programs, life issues from conception to natural death, and activities offered from our Respect Life Committee and the Archdiocese of Chicago. Tuesday we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation. You may worship with us at 6:30am, 8:00am, 10:00am All School Liturgy, 12:00 Noon Mass, 4:45pm Religious Education Program Mass and 7:00pm. Wednesday we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. In addition to our regular morning Masses we will celebrate a Memorial Mass at 7:00pm at which time we pray for all families that have suffered a loss this past year. All are welcome and invited to come out and join us in prayer. The following is my understanding of the communion of Saints in our rich Catholic tradition: St. Bartholomew, pray for us. St. George, pray for us. St. Michael, pray for us. St. Colette, St. Denis, St. Lawrence O Toole, pray for us. I was born and raised on the south side of Waukegan, nurtured in faith by caring parents, a loving family and fellow parishioners that worshipped at St. Bartholomew s Church (now Most Blessed Trinity Parish). Growing up, participation in Sunday Mass was not something that filled our calendar only if there was a break in obligations to travel sports or other events in the family calendar. Participating in weekly worship and ethnic rituals and celebrations were part of the fabric and fiber of our family and our lived faith. My mom worked part time as the parish secretary and bulletin editor at our local parish. Dad was a lector at Mass. Following in his footsteps, I also served as a lector after retiring from altar serving at the age of 16. Fr. Bill Zavaski, pastor at the time would refer to me and my brother as the twin towers. Bill claims to have felt very comfortable and safe when the Nacius brothers were serving Mass. Participation in 40 hours and other parish celebrations were part of the worship life and prayer life of my family with the parishioners of St. Barth s. Hanging in the hallway of our family home on the other side of the wall of the one land line phone with the 12 foot phone cord stretched to 20 plus feet was the crucifix that was reverenced each and every time dad left the house. The family crèche, passed down from one generation to the next, was traditionally placed in front of the Christmas tree, in the center of our living room, the center of our celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior. (I look forward to setting up this crèche here for my first Christmas at St. Mary s). I had spent the majority of the first twenty-seven years of my life in Lake County. Ordained in 1989, I have been assigned the next twenty seven years of my life on the south side of the Archdiocese in villages and towns such as Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Rolling Meadows, the Scottsdale neighborhood in Chicago, Matteson and most recently Flossmoor. Last year, my dad who had courageously dealt with health challenges for years died quickly on May 13, 2015. My family has made it through the first year without a husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend. As health concerns and challenges increased in my dad and mom, I would regularly be asked by my dad if I was going to spend all of my priesthood in Cook County. (He wasn t too sure I would ever leave the south side.) At the time, caring for my parents was manageable with access to the tollway, an I-Pass and my God-given size 14 shoe to make it to and from parents doctors appointments, hospital stays in Highland Park or Lake Forest, supporting them and family as they advanced in age from their 60 s, into their 70 s and then their 80 s. Continued on the next page

Father Mike s Letter Continued... Growing up, the Litany of Saints was prayed at the Easter Vigil at St. Barth s. I have come to a new appreciation of their impact and role in my life since my dad s death last year. I am not able to provide anyone theological proof of my dad s entrance into his eternal reward. I do believe through the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ my dad knows the eternal gift of salvation and everlasting life. Nine months after his death, what conversations was he able to share with Jesus in heaven? Was he able to have some time with the Blessed Mother? What saints did he meet in the streets of heaven that he prayed to as a young boy at St. Bartholomew s? What I do know is that within the first year of his death, his son was assigned to the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest in Lake County, just over 11 miles from the home where my mom resides, the home where dad breathed his last in May 2015. The sharing parish of the Church of St. Mary is Most Blessed Trinity in Waukegan. The Catholic Churches in Waukegan and North Chicago have led the way in efforts now being addressed by the Archdiocese in the Renew my Church effort. The parish of St. Barth s became St. Barth s, St. Joe s became Holy Family now Most Blessed Trinity. I was fortunate to have been reared and spending the first twenty-seven years of my life in Lake County. I was blessed to have served in six wonderful parishes in Cook County the second twenty-seven years of my life. I now return to Lake County, beginning the next period of my life. I will be able to support the ministry of our sharing parish Most Blessed Trinity where my vocation was nurtured. I am able to be of support to my mom, my siblings and family without spending countless hours (and tolls) on the tollway. Faith, family and the Communion of saints has new meaning for me today. I would imagine I will come to understand them even more as I keep a closer eye on my mom in her 80 s. Mom has become a parishioner at St. Mary s, sitting in the front pew, the first seat at the 7:30am Sunday Mass. Occasionally I may even ask her, for old time sake, to edit my columns for the local parish bulletin. St. Richard, St. Mary, pray for us. God bless you! Keep sharing the faith! All Souls Day Mass and Reception, Wednesday, November 2nd, 7:00pm We invite you to attend the annual All Souls Day Mass when we will remember in prayer the deceased of our Parish Family. You may bring a framed picture of your loved one to stand on a table near the Sanctuary. After Mass, a reception will follow in the Church Community Room hosted by the Guild of St. Mary St. Anthony Circle. We will especially be remembering those who have died during the past year. Throughout the month of November, the Book of the Dead will be open on a table near the Baptistry where you may write the names of your departed loved ones to be prayed for. Anointing of The Sick, Sunday, November 13 at Noon Our parish will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick within the context of the Eucharist on Sunday, November 13 at Noon in our Church. The Anointing of the Sick is one of the Church's seven sacraments instituted by Christ. In this sacrament, the Church proclaims her belief in Christ's power over the pain and suffering of illness. This is a powerful way to meet the Lord and receive strength and mercy from Him. If you would like to be anointed during the 12:00 o clock Mass on November 13, please r.s.v.p. to the receptionist at St. Mary s at 847-234-0205.

School of St. Mary 5th Grade Retreat The 5th graders got pumped up by singing, dancing, playing games and then focused on how we are made in God's image and known by Him. After celebrating Mass together we worked on our service project - Fill a Heart 4 Kids. The 5th graders made 210 encouraging cards, packed a care bag (colored pencils, an adult coloring book, a stuffed animal and candy) and then prayed for each child that would receive a bag. The kids did amazing and had a blast! Church of St. Mary Religious Education All parish 8th Grade Con irmation candidates, their sponsors and parents were invited to hear Father Michael Knotek earlier this month. The meeting was well attended and Father Knotek received rave reviews for his message. Highlights of the meeting included Father sharing a list of ways to prepare for Con irmation: studying, praying, choosing a sponsor, choosing a patron saint and doing acts of charity. In addition, Father discussed a number of ways to help practice moral decision making: talking to good and holy people, reading Scripture, following your conscience, as well as abiding by Church law, and civil law when it is not in con lict with Church teachings. Adults and students alike were drawn into the conversation that included personal experiences and current events. Father Knotek also distributed sponsor interview questions that he asked the candidates to conduct and return to the Con irmation retreat in January.
