St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor I Will Go to the Altar of God, #5 The Cycle of Transformation I do quite a bit of reading in the area of business management. In recent years, much has been written about personal and corporate transformation how it can happen, why it should happen, and how to overcome resistance to change. The underlying theory in these texts is that maintaining the status quo is dangerous for our future. If we are satisfied with the right here, right now, we run the risk of becoming stagnant. In recent months, someone talked to me about a town they regularly visit in southern Illinois. Years ago, the town leaders decided that they had come as close to Utopia as possible. They passed a resolution discouraging further growth or any additional businesses. Today the town is pretty much dead. We are all familiar with the popular expression it is what it is. We are expected to conclude from that statement that and it will always be that way. Or as we say in Sacred Heart Province: Immer so gewesen. I once heard a preacher begin a homily on the Wedding Feast at Cana by declaring, Jesus is in the changing business. And so he is. He changed fishermen into fishers of men; he changed a Samaritan woman into a missionary; he changed the persecutor Saul into the preacher Paul. Jesus is in the changing business. As 21 st century disciples, we, too, are called to transformation. For us, the potential for personal and corporate change is seen most clearly at Mass. As happened 2000 years ago, the Word of God continues to challenge the way we think and act, constantly drawing us to see the world through the eyes of God. As the priest prays over the bread and wine in the name of the assembly, those gifts are transformed into the and of Christ. When we share Communion, we are to be transformed by taking the and into our own bodies and our own lives. As St. Augustine is reported to have said: Behold what you are; become what you receive. Or as an old spiritual says, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart. Each time we approach the Communion table, we should become at least a little more like Jesus. Soon after we receive Communion, we are sent back out into the world not as passive observers but as disciples empowered by Christ to preach the Word and draw others to Him. We are heirs to the Great Commission highlighted in the closing lines of the Gospel of Matthew. We are the salt and light and yeast empowered to transform the world into a closer approximation of the Kingdom of God. That is the Cycle of Transformation that is intended to happen at every Mass: the bread and wine become and ; we who share the and are transformed into little Christs ; we go forth to transform the world to reflect the Kingdom. That can be a difficult and wearing task so we come back to the table Sunday after Sunday to be refreshed and transformed. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE Please join in the 40 days of prayer and fasting for the end of abortion from February 18 March 29. Families or individuals are encouraged to make a pledge of how to participate. Examples might be: fasting weekly as a family from 30 or 60 min of TV and spending that time in reading a children s Bible or life of the saints, praying the family rosary weekly, eating less (in whatever way you like) one day a week and letting hunger remind you to pray, spending 30 60 minutes in Eucharistic adoration weekly perhaps on your lunch hour at the nearest church or hospital chapel. In addition, St Francis will have a Day of Eucharistic Adoration and Prayer for Life on Tuesday, February 24, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We need to pray that mothers will receive help in a crisis pregnancy, and that our culture will embrace chastity and respect for every human life. We need to pray for the end of businesses such as Planned Parenthood so that their dispensing of abortifacient contraceptives and the morning after pill (which can cause early abortions), and their referrals for abortions will end. Sign up sheets for commitments for prayer hours (or half hours) will be at all entrances. Contact Angie Esker at 857-6276 for more info.
